Fold In The Cheese? An Approach To Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis To Students, Jennifer Jackson Phd Mar 2024

Fold In The Cheese? An Approach To Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis To Students, Jennifer Jackson Phd

The Qualitative Report

There are many elements of qualitative data analysis that may appear intangible to novice researchers. In this article, I present an approach to a data analysis workshop with students, where I do my best to avoid the instruction to “fold in the cheese,” as per the television series Schitt’s Creek. Students attend 90-minute workshops where they use an assortment of buttons to practice different strategies of qualitative analysis. The tactile mechanism of sorting objects has proven invaluable in workshops, as it helps students to physically organize their thoughts and takes pressure off to find the “right” answer. The nature of …

Pushing On In Defense Of Qualitative Research: A Book Review Of Patricia Leavy’S Oral History, Vaso Thomas Dec 2022

Pushing On In Defense Of Qualitative Research: A Book Review Of Patricia Leavy’S Oral History, Vaso Thomas

The Qualitative Report

The central feature of Patricia Leavy’s book, Oral History: Understanding Qualitative Research, is the legitimization of doing oral history and, generally, qualitative research in the social sciences. Leavy reviews the foundational philosophies that inform the qualitative practice of doing social research and the methodological tools that affirm the scientific nature of oral history (such as reflection, explicitness, proper coding, and congruence). Leavy instructs the reader through each stage of the methodological process from research design to writing up the research findings. Oral History is not only an instructional guide but also a response to the critics of the qualitative …

A Guide To Abductive Thematic Analysis, Jamie Thompson May 2022

A Guide To Abductive Thematic Analysis, Jamie Thompson

The Qualitative Report

Thematic analysis is an increasingly popular method for analysing qualitative data within the social sciences. Current guides for conducting thematic analysis promote the method’s broad flexibility across research designs, which has resulted in criticism that the method lacks the rigour and structure necessary for credible academic research. Recognizing the challenges faced by qualitative scholars, I developed and present an 8-step prescriptive approach specific to abductive methodologies incorporating many concepts from seminal works in thematic analysis, and importantly maintaining the balance of theorising with empirical data, which is the core of abductive research.

Contest Powwow: Sport And Native American Culture, Steven J. Aicinena Dr, Sebahattin Ziyanak

The Qualitative Report

The Native American powwow has served to maintain the culture of North America’s Indigenous peoples since before the arrival of European colonialists. In traditional forms of the powwow, competition is not common whereas contest powwows are characterized by the primacy of competition. We assess similarities and differences between the contest powwow and competitive sport found within the broader American society through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 14 competitive contest powwow dancers. We address a number of questions through the qualitative research process, such as what does the powwow mean to you? What are your primary goals for competing? We analyzed the …

Thinking About The Coding Process In Qualitative Data Analysis, Victoria Elliott Nov 2018

Thinking About The Coding Process In Qualitative Data Analysis, Victoria Elliott

The Qualitative Report

Coding is a ubiquitous part of the qualitative research process, but it is often under-considered in research methods training and literature. This article explores a number of questions about the coding process which are often raised by beginning researchers, in the light of the recommendations of methods textbooks and the factors which contribute to an answer to these questions. I argue for a conceptualisation of coding as a decision-making process, in which decisions about aspects of coding such as density, frequency, size of data pieces to be coded, are all made by individual researchers in line with their methodological background, …

Analytic memos provide an avenue for the researcher to record his or her thoughts during the research process and to code the memos as additional data for the study. The companion website provides code lists, coding examples from journals, and sample interview transcripts …

To Think Or Not To Think With Theory In Qualitative Research, Mohamed Yacoub Jul 2017

To Think Or Not To Think With Theory In Qualitative Research, Mohamed Yacoub

The Qualitative Report

Thinking with Theory in Qualitative Research: Viewing Data across Multiple Perspectives is a book that challenges the traditional way of analyzing qualitative data. The book invites researchers who use qualitative methods to think with theory when it comes to analyzing their data since analyzing the data with no theory in mind can make injustice to the data. Thinking with theory, however, can enrich one’s study and direct the process of the data analysis. The authors offer us six theories, as examples, to think with when analyzing qualitative data. These theories are: Derrida’s Deconstruction, Spivak’s Marginality, Foucault’s Power/Knowledge, Butler’s Performativity, Deleuze’s …

Recommended use of this text is as a supplemental text to more seminal works on content analysis or as …

Contrasting Classic, Straussian, And Constructivist Grounded Theory: Methodological And Philosophical Conflicts, Méabh Kenny, Robert Fourie Aug 2015

Contrasting Classic, Straussian, And Constructivist Grounded Theory: Methodological And Philosophical Conflicts, Méabh Kenny, Robert Fourie

The Qualitative Report

Grounded Theory (GT) is an innovative research methodology, consisting of three prevailing traditions: Classic, Straussian, and Constructivist GT. Despite arising from the same root, and sharing a number of the original methodological techniques, Classic, Straussian, and Constructivist GT have nevertheless diverged to such an extent that they are neither homogenous nor interchangeable methodologies. They are differentiated by contrasting philosophical frameworks and conflicting methodological directives. Through a careful analysis of the literature, the authors propose that the incongruity of the three GT traditions hinges on three principal and paramount demarcations: Firstly, their contending coding procedures; secondly, their opposing philosophical positions; and …

Opening The Ears That Science Closed: Transforming Qualitative Data Using Oral Coding, James A. Bernauer Apr 2015

Opening The Ears That Science Closed: Transforming Qualitative Data Using Oral Coding, James A. Bernauer

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this article is to describe an alternative method for transcribing and transforming (analyzing and interpreting) oral data collected from interviews. Rather than record and then immediately transcribe data, the “oral coding” approach relies on a Three-Phase Approach. Phase One involves extended and reflective listening to the original interview data. This extended time with data in its original oral form enables researchers to construct both propositional and tacit knowledge in relation to the phenomenon being investigated. Intensive encounters with the original data are continued during the Second Phase of analysis and interpretation by re-recording on another device those …

Blending The Old And The New: Qualitative Data Analysis A S Critical Thinking And Using Nvivo With A Generic Approach, James A. Bernauer, Marilyn Lichtman, Cynthia Jacobs, Stuart Robinson Aug 2013

Blending The Old And The New: Qualitative Data Analysis A S Critical Thinking And Using Nvivo With A Generic Approach, James A. Bernauer, Marilyn Lichtman, Cynthia Jacobs, Stuart Robinson

The Qualitative Report

In this article the authors seek to make the case that qualitative data analysis can be explained within the framework of critical thinking and incorporates within this framework the role of technology – specifically NVivo. First they discuss critical thinking from the perspectives of Bloom, Adler, and Polanyi. They then link critical thinking to the concept of a general inductive approach to qualitative analysis as described by Thomas. Finally, they illustrate connections of both critical thinking and the general inductive approach to technology using NVivo screenshots.

“A Highly Accessible Text :” A Review Of Pat Bazeley’S Qualitative Data Analysis: Practical Strategies, Susan Zholl

The Qualitative Report

Pat Bazeley’s book advances the procedures of qualitative data coding and analysis. Her work provides a highly accessible framework for both new and seasoned researchers to consider in the analysis of interview, survey, photo and video data collected in qualitative studies. In her work Bazeley acknowledges the use of technology to support data analysis (i.e., NVivo), but also promotes the use of more traditional paper - and - pencil methods. This text would be a great addition to a graduate level course in qualitative research.

How To “Get” Grounded And Not “Get” Lost: Review Of Grounded Theory For Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide, Kristin Wyatt Apr 2013

How To “Get” Grounded And Not “Get” Lost: Review Of Grounded Theory For Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide, Kristin Wyatt

The Qualitative Report

As a developing PhD student one must work to develop the ability to apply critical thinking skills and analysis. In my pursuit to further understand qualitative research methods, I chose to look more closely at grounded theory method due to its seemingly complex structure and unique method of theory development. Urquhart (2013) works to present the components of grounded theory method (GTM) as a reaction to confusion and frustration of postgraduate students struggling with the method. She provides a sequential “how to” guide on GTM while asserting the importance of staying flexible within the structure. She acknowledges and addresses the …

A Critique Of The Capacity Of Strauss’ Grounded Theory For Prediction, Change, And Control In Organisational Strategy Via A Grounded Theorisation Of Leisure And Cultural Strategy, Ali Bakir, Vian Bakir Dec 2006

A Critique Of The Capacity Of Strauss’ Grounded Theory For Prediction, Change, And Control In Organisational Strategy Via A Grounded Theorisation Of Leisure And Cultural Strategy, Ali Bakir, Vian Bakir

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we critique grounded theory’s ability to fulfil its aim of offering a practical vehicle for prediction, change, and control as stipulated in grounded theory’s original formulation by Glaser and Strauss, and later developed by Strauss. We do this through a case study approach, whereby we develop a grounded theory of leisure and cultural strategy within a local authority, and critically reflect on the process of grounded theorisation, together with its implications for generating practical tools in that most practical of academic fields; organisational strategy. We demonstrate that despite generating good grounded theory on leisure and cultural strategy, …
