Understanding Ngos And Their Effectiveness Through A Comparative Study Of Their Role In Redd+, Jessica Russo
Political Science Student Scholarship
This thesis explores the following question: what roles do NGOs play and how effective may they be in efforts at global governance? Through a comparative case study analysis of NGOs advocating for Reducing Emissions for Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) and NGOs implementing REDD+ projects, specifically the Surui Forest Carbon Project located in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, I examine whether NGOs are more effective taking on the role as advocates or policy implementers. For this work, I will argue that independent of the multiplicity of roles that NGOs play, their effectiveness is a function of the level of their …

Power Tangled In The Web: Assessing The Democratizing Power Of Information And Communication Technologies, Patrick Kerr
Political Science Student Scholarship
This thesis questions the universality of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as “liberation technology” and whether they enhance the political power of citizens in some capacities. Can ICTs be forces of democratization? To what degree are grassroots efforts empowered or stymied by a government's use of ICTs? By examining four case studies, this thesis aims to explore the disguised forms of control embedded in ICTs and how its uses vary.

Political Religiosity And Gender Inequality Within The Arab World, Damara Simpson
Political Science Student Scholarship
Typically, stories of gender inequality in the Arab World points towards Islam as a major contributing factor. The research question of this project is: what is the cause of the gender inequality and lack of women’s rights in Arab countries? I hypothesized that the level of political religiosity of Arab countries is directly linked to gender inequality. The dependent variable for my research project is gender inequality, and the independent variable is political religiosity. My hypothesis was tested by rating and ranking countries in terms of political religiosity and gender inequality and comparing these two data sets graphically. According to …

The Rise Of Religious Parties In Turkey And India, Hannah Donovan
The Rise Of Religious Parties In Turkey And India, Hannah Donovan
Political Science Student Scholarship
This project examines the rise of religious parties in secular democracies. In both Turkey and India, religious parties have enjoyed electoral successes (and failures). While religion is a significant issue to voters, it is oftentimes the persistence of economic problems that leads to the rise and fall of religious parties. The impact of coalition governments, change in political rhetoric, and relationship between government and religion in both countries are also analyzed and contrasted.
