Creep Behaviour And Constitutive Model Of Coal Filled With Gas, Xiangchun Li, Chunli Yang, Ting X. Ren, Baisheng Nie, Caihong Zhao, Shuiwen Liu, Tao Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Coal exhibits different creep behaviours when filled with different amounts of gas. Creep tests of coal filled with 0 and 0.5. MPa. gas were performed, and strain under different axial stress was compared. The three creep constitutive models which were analysed using the method fitting experimental data for determining which creep model can reflect the creep process of the test best. The results show that the deformation of coal filled with 0.5. MPa. gas is more higher than that of coal filled with 0. MPa. gas under the same axial stress. Gas plays a positive effect on the deformation of …

Explicit Stress-Strain Equations For Modelling Frictional Materials, K J. Xu, Martin D. Liu, Buddhima Indraratna, Suksun Horpibulsuk

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this paper, a comprehensive study on simulating the shearing behavior of frictional materials is performed. A set of two explicit equations, describing the relationship among the shear stress ratio and the distortional strain and the volumetric strain, are formulated independently. The equations contain three stress parameters and three strain parameters and another parameter representing the nonuniformity of stress and strain during softening. All the parameters have clear physical significance and can be determined experimentally. It is demonstrated that the proposed equations have the capacity of simulating the complicated shearing behavior of many types of frictional materials including geomaterials. The …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Predicting the movements, ground reaction forces and neuromuscular activity during gait can be a valuable asset to the clinical rehabilitation community, both to understand pathology, as well as to plan effective intervention. In this work we use an optimal control method to generate predictive simulations of pathological gait in the sagittal plane. We construct a patient-specific model corresponding to a 7-year old child with gait abnormalities and identify the optimal spring characteristics of an ankle-foot orthosis that minimizes muscle effort. Our simulations include the computation of foot-ground reaction forces, as well as the neuromuscular dynamics using computationally efficient muscle torque …

Role Of Membrane Fouling Substances On The Rejection Of N-Nitrosamines By Reverse Osmosis, Takahiro Fujioka, Hitoshi Kodamatani, Hidenobu Aizawa, Stephen Gray, Kenneth P. Ishida, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The impact of fouling substances on the rejection of four N-nitrosamines by a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was evaluated by characterizing individual organic fractions in a secondary wastewater effluent and deploying a novel high-performance liquid chromatography-photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence (HPLC-PR-CL) analytical technique. The HPLC-PR-CL analytical technique allowed for a systematic examination of the correlation between the fouling level and the permeation of N-nitrosamines in the secondary wastewater effluent and synthetic wastewaters through an RO membrane. Membrane fouling caused by the secondary wastewater effluent led to a notable decrease in the permeation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) while a smaller but nevertheless …

A Mann-Whitney Type Effect Measure Of Interaction For Factorial Designs, Jan De Neve, Olivier Thas Jan 2017

A Mann-Whitney Type Effect Measure Of Interaction For Factorial Designs, Jan De Neve, Olivier Thas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

We propose a measure for interaction for factorial designs that is formulated in terms of a probability similar to the effect size of the Mann-Whitney test. It is shown how asymptotic confidence intervals can be obtained for the effect size and how a statistical test can be constructed. We further show how the test is related to the test proposed by Bhapkar and Gore [Sankhya A, 36:261-272 (1974)]. The results of a simulation study indicate that the test has good power properties and illustrate when the asymptotic approximations are adequate. The effect size is demonstrated on an example dataset.

About Face: Matching Unfamiliar Faces Across Rotations Of View And Lighting, Simone K. Favelle, Harold C. Hill, Peter Claes Jan 2017

About Face: Matching Unfamiliar Faces Across Rotations Of View And Lighting, Simone K. Favelle, Harold C. Hill, Peter Claes

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Matching the identities of unfamiliar faces is heavily influenced by variations in their images. Changes to viewpoint and lighting direction during face perception are commonplace across yaw and pitch axes and can result in dramatic image differences. We report two experiments that, for the first time, factorially investigate the combined effects of lighting and view angle on matching performance for unfamiliar faces. The use of three-dimensional head models allowed control of both lighting and viewpoint. We found viewpoint effects in the yaw axis with little to no effect of lighting. However, for rotations about the pitch axis, there were both …

Eeg Differences Between Eyes-Closed And Eyes-Open Resting Remain In Healthy Ageing, Robert J. Barry, Frances M. De Blasio

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

In young adults and children, the eyes-closed (EC) resting state is one of low EEG arousal, with the change to eyes-open (EO) primarily involving an increase in arousal. We used this arousal perspective to interpret EC/EO differences in healthy young and older adults. EEG was recorded from 20 young (Mage=20.4years) and 20 gender-matched older (Mage=68.2years) right-handed adults during two 3min resting conditions; EC then EO. Older participants displayed less delta and theta, some reduction in alpha, and increased beta. Global activity in all bands reduced with opening the eyes, but did not differ with age, indicating that the energetics of …

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the burdens of this disease continue to track prior disadvantage. In order to galvanise a coordinated global res ponse, WHO has recently launched the End TB Campaign that aims to eliminate TB by 2050. Key to this is the introduction of population screening programmes in low-burden settings to identify and treat people who have latent TB infection (LTBI). The defining features of LTBI are: that it is not an active disease but confers an increased risk of disease; the socially disadvantaged are those most in danger and uncertainty …
