Self-Reported Practices, Attitudes And Levels Of Training Of Practitioners In The English Nhs Stop Smoking Services, Mairtin S. Mcdermott, Robert West, Leonie S. Brose, Andy Mcewen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The primary aim of the current study is to investigate the self-reported practices, attitudes and levels of training of stop smoking practitioners (SSPs) working at the English National Health Service's (NHS) Stop Smoking Services (SSSs). A secondary aim was to investigate differences between 'Specialist' and 'Community' SSPs. An online survey was conducted with 484 SSPs. Most (94%) SSPs offered one-to-one appointments to smokers, only 43% always used the abrupt quit model and 30% reported ever recommending particular medication to clients. SSPs reported an average of 3.7 days training when starting work and 26% reported never observing an experienced practitioner before …

Self-Guided Bullets Won't Stuff Up, But What About The Grunts And Drones Firing Them?, Katina Michael Jan 2012

Self-Guided Bullets Won't Stuff Up, But What About The Grunts And Drones Firing Them?, Katina Michael

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

At the beginning of this year Sandia Labs in the United States announced it had patented a design for a self-guided bullet that could help soldiers at war. The technology is expected to prevent the need for targeted air strikes that could kill innocent people while criminals take cover in their midst. This "super" self-guided bullet can hit laser-designated targets accurately to around 2,000 metres. An example of this capability can be found in the XM25 rifle. To rephrase the Cold War notion of "limited nuclear warfare", we could now say with these latest developments to the war-fighting repertoire that …

Understanding The Role Of Moisture In The Self-Heating Process Of Compost Piles, Thiansiri Luangwilai, Harvinder S. Sidhu, Mark I. Nelson Jan 2012

Understanding The Role Of Moisture In The Self-Heating Process Of Compost Piles, Thiansiri Luangwilai, Harvinder S. Sidhu, Mark I. Nelson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper considers the self-heating process which occurs in a compost pile using one-dimensional spatially-dependent models and incorporating terms that account for self-heating due to both biological and oxidation mechanisms. As the moisture content in a compost pile is a crucial factor in its degradation process, we utilise a model which incorporates four mass-balance equations, namely, energy, oxygen, vapour and liquid water concentrations, to investigate the behaviour of compost piles when moisture content is present. Analyses of different initial water contents within a compost pile, different ambient relative humidities and different amounts of water added to the pile by rainstorms …

Self-Shape Optimisation Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Timothee Savoyat, Benoit Gilbert, Lip H. Teh Jan 2012

Self-Shape Optimisation Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Timothee Savoyat, Benoit Gilbert, Lip H. Teh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

One of the main advantages of cold-formed steel profiles is the great flexibility of cross-sectional shapes, attributable to the manufacturing process allowing achievement of almost any desired cross-section. The cross-sectional shape is the key element in enhancing the strength of coldformed steel profiles as it controls the three fundamental buckling modes: local, distortional (for open profiles) and global. However, research on optimisation of cold-formed steel profiles has been mainly restricted to the conventional C, Z or Σ cross-sectional shapes and seldom new crosssectional shapes have been considered. This report presents the optimisation of cold-formed open columns using the recently developed …

Self-Mixing Interferometry Used For Instrumentations And Measurements(Invited), Silvano Donati, Zhao Wang, Yanguang Yu Jan 2012

Self-Mixing Interferometry Used For Instrumentations And Measurements(Invited), Silvano Donati, Zhao Wang, Yanguang Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper reviews the development of a new configuration of interferometry, Self-mixing Interferometry(SMI). SMI is attractive because it doesn't require any optical part external to the laser and can be employed in a variety of measurements, ranging from the traditional measurements related to optical path length like displacements, small-amplitude vibrations, velocity; to sensing of weak optical echoes, like return loss and isolation factor measurements; and also to a special feature for the interaction with the medium, measurements of physical parameters, like laser line width, coherence length, and the alfa factor. Because it is also a coherent detection scheme, the SMI …

Wavelet Transform Based De-Noising Method For Self Mixing Interferometry Signals, Yuan Sun, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi Jan 2012

Wavelet Transform Based De-Noising Method For Self Mixing Interferometry Signals, Yuan Sun, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signals are observed from a laser diode (LD) with optical feedbacks induced by an external target. SMI signals carry information related to both of the target and parameters of the LDs. However, the noise contained in SMI signals greatly degrades the applications of the SMI systems. This paper proposes a wavelet transform based de-noising method which can effectively eliminate noise while keeping an SMI waveform less changed. The proposed method is verified by both simulations and experiments
