Research efforts to comprehend coping strategies in response to stress within the Latinx/Hispanic community have been limited. The inability to effectively cope with stress can lead to physical and mental health problems in adults. This study aims to test the psychometric properties of the translated version of a recently developed coping assessment, “The Coping Inventory,” to evaluate its validity among Spanish-speaking Latinx individuals. The results indicate that The Coping Inventory demonstrates reliability and validity among this population. The riot at the United States Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump shocked the American political system and represented contemporary politics’ shift toward more reactionary, populist politics. Attempts to explain the events of January 6th, 2021, have focused on the role of conspiracy theories, white supremacy, toxic masculinity, and the violation of norms. This study examines the demographics, and job, services, responsibilities, barriers, facilitators, and satisfaction of Texas school social workers. A survey was emailed to Texas school social workers identified on a state list. A convergent parallel mixed method design was used to compare and discuss quantitative and qualitative data obtained. The data reveal consistency with existing school social work literature related to demographics and provided novel information on work characteristics, job satisfaction, work barriers and facilitators, and program preparation of school social workers. Algorithm-driven systems are increasingly being used across a variety of settings (Center for Democracy and Technology, 2020; O’Neil, 2017; Sauppé and Mutlu, 2015). However, many everyday technologies are imbued with racial biases that unfairly discriminate against racially marginalized groups (Hankerson et al, 2016; Crawford, 2016; O’Neil, 2017). Opioid use disorder (OUD) affects over two million Americans, and over 42,000 Americans perished of opioid overdoses in 2016 (Volkow et al., 2019). During the initial years of the opioid crisis, overdose deaths were primarily attributed to prescription analgesics, heroin, and synthetic opioids. However, it was illicit prescription opioid painkiller use that ranked highest in terms of fatalities (Volkow et al., 2019). The determination of people with disabilities to enroll in postsecondary education did not remove the struggles and challenges of adjusting to the college environment despite the provisions of the legislation. Students with disabilities still had problems with degree completion, graduation rates, barriers caused primarily by their unwillingness to disclose their disabilities, and the support networks of these students. This study explores the relationship between the acceptance of disability, self-efficacy, support, and the academic performance/grade point average of postsecondary students with disabilities who receive disability accommodations through their institution’s disability service offices.

This dissertation comprises two essays on credit risk correlation. In the first essay, we provide robust empirical evidence that lenders charge higher loan spreads to borrowers with higher credit risk correlation. This effect is concentrated in investment grade firms, driven by tightening lending conditions, and more pronounced for firms with higher rollover risk. Furthermore, banks whose borrowers have higher average credit risk correlation, have greater default risk themselves. In the second paper, we find that a trading strategy that buys high- and sells low-credit risk correlation stocks generates significant risk-adjusted expected return of about 121 bps per annum. Barrio working-class Latinx populations have been historically ignored and prevented from creating sustainable roots within their own communities due to the confluence of settler colonialism, neoliberalism, and gentrification. I argue the neoliberal city creates an unsustainable predicament that seeks to marginalize working-class individuals from inner-city life, thus systematically precluding future generations of working-class Latinxs from upward mobility. Little attention has been paid to Texas cities resulting from neoliberal policies perpetuating settler colonialism and gentrification. Asclepias prostrata, commonly referred to as prostrate milkweed, is a rare South Texas native plant species. In February of 2023, A. prostrata was listed as a federally endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Due to the limited available observations and literature for A. prostrata, this study was completed to bring new information that could be utilized for future restorative efforts. There are few excavated sites at which Paleoindian cultural materials have been found, and in these cases the context is uncertain. In order to better understand the Paleoindian period, projectile points that reside in private collections are documented, and the time period they are assigned to, based on absolute dating from surrounding regions, is used to cross-date local materials. As a result of historical traumas caused by the Spanish invasion of Mexico, the autonomy of its Indigenous peoples has been replaced by a Eurocentric identifier based on a colonial language and theologies. Because of the vastness surrounding the Nahua pantheon, Spanish and Church officials relied on guided syncretism as means of correcting their methodologies in converting Mexico’s Indigenous population. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic stay-at-home orders in the U.S., many parents of school-age children faced new challenges, such increased child-care demands (Adams, 2021). Prime et al. (2020) theorized these negative pandemic impacts would decrease parents' well-being and thereby impact children's psychological adjustment. The present study examined the effect of interpersonal trauma-related PTSD symptoms on gun attitudes and protective gun ownership. This thesis establishes a foundation for liminality in political theory. Liminality, a concept mostly developed in anthropology, is used by them to describe middle periods in rites of passage. Unlike the anthropologists, I argue that liminality should be theorized phenomenologically. Utilizing the history of political philosophy, liminality is defined as a dialectical phenomenon that acts between and beyond the limits of things, Self, and Other. I describe liminality as an ontological-epistemological or existential condition that acts as a connecting tissue to both define what is and the space between things. When individuals are presented with two options and are asked to select the conceptually larger item, a size congruity effect is usually observed. A size congruity effect is present in comparison tasks when congruent stimuli, whose physical size and conceptual size match, are compared much faster than incongruent stimuli, whose physical size and conceptual size do not match. The current study used images and words as stimuli to investigate the two competing hypotheses for the size congruity effect using delta plots. Relocating for college is one facet of the college adjustment process that has been scarcely explored. Research suggests that relocated students report more severe depression symptoms (Reyes-Rodriguez et al., 2012), poorer social adjustment (Brooks & Dubois, 1995), and worse mental health overall (King et al., 2011) compared to nonrelocated students.
