Sources Of Interference In Recognition Testing, Jeffrey Annis, Kenneth J. Malmberg, Amy Criss, Richard M. Shiffrin Sep 2013

Sources Of Interference In Recognition Testing, Jeffrey Annis, Kenneth J. Malmberg, Amy Criss, Richard M. Shiffrin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Recognition memory accuracy is harmed by prior testing (a.k.a., output interference [OI]; Tulving & Arbuckle, 1966). In several experiments, we interpolated various tasks between recognition test trials. The stimuli and the tasks were more similar (lexical decision [LD] of words and nonwords) or less similar (gender identification of male and female faces) to the stimuli and task used in recognition testing. Not only did the similarity between the interpolated and recognition tasks not affect recognition accuracy but performance of the interpolated task caused no interference in subsequent recognition testing. Only the addition of recognition trials caused OI. When we presented …

Time Doesn’T Change Everything: The Longitudinal Course Of Distress Tolerance And Its Relationship With Internalizing And Externalizing Symptoms During Early Adolescence, Jenna R. Cummings, Marina Bornovalova, Tiina Ojanen, Elizabeth Hunt, Laura Macpherson, Carl W. Lejuez Jul 2013

Lejuez

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although distress tolerance is an emerging construct of empirical interest, we know little about its temporal change, developmental trajectory, and prospective relationships with maladaptive behaviors. The current study examined the developmental trajectory (mean- and individual-level change, and rank-order stability) of distress tolerance in an adolescent sample of boys and girls (N = 277) followed over a four-year period. Next we examined if distress tolerance influenced change in Externalizing (EXT) and Internalizing (INT) symptoms, and if EXT and INT symptoms in turn influenced change in distress tolerance. Finally, we examined if any of these trends differed by gender. Results indicated …

Preserving Content From Your Institutional Repository, Wendy Robertson, Carol Ann Borchert Jun 2013

Preserving Content From Your Institutional Repository, Wendy Robertson, Carol Ann Borchert

Digital Scholarship Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Between institutional repositories and hosting journals, many libraries are becoming responsible for scholarly content in new ways. While PDFs are the most common format today, the unique, local, serial content may be in variety of formats. These items may be digitized text, born digital text, audio, video, or images. This presentation will discuss formats that will remain accessible through time (PDF/A, txt, xml) so that content is not locked in proprietary formats. It will also discuss options for backing up items and associated metadata, including simple back-ups, off-site storage of files, LOCKSS, Private LOCKSS Networks, and Portico. The presenters will …

Seeking Care: Mindfulness, Reflexive Struggle, And Puffy Selves In Bullying, Keith Berry Apr 2013

Seeking Care: Mindfulness, Reflexive Struggle, And Puffy Selves In Bullying, Keith Berry

Communication Faculty Publications

What does it mean to become ourselves, to experience who we and others understand us to be? What might the process look like for younger selves who are immersed in the looming problem of bullying, and what is at stake regarding how we respond to its complex storyline? How can we engage ethnographic research that studies ourselves and others in ways that are also more caring than harmful for all persons involved? As senseless bullying continues, I seek meaningful answers to questions of becoming and identities within these intricate relational spaces. Yet as I perform this seeking, the search becomes …

The Role Of Librarians In Academic Success, Claudia J. Dold Jan 2013

The Role Of Librarians In Academic Success, Claudia J. Dold

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Librarians address all levels of information needs for the university: its acquisition, its production, its storage, and instruction for its safe and gainful use. Most of today’s college students have a high degree of computer literacy but are weak in their abilities to determine the quality of the information that is so readily available. Students need to be taught to find, evaluate, and use information in an academically-oriented manner in order to solve complex problems. Good library skills are integral to academic success. In conjunction with research and teaching faculty, librarians create a framework for knowledge acquisition in the evolving …

Implications Of Voluntary Communication Based On Gender, Education Level And Cultural Issues In An Online Environment, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten Cox Jan 2013

Implications Of Voluntary Communication Based On Gender, Education Level And Cultural Issues In An Online Environment, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten Cox

School of Information Faculty Publications

Because of the method(s) of communication in a particular class, gender and cultural differences can lead to a different mix of voluntary communication in the online or blended class setting from that of a traditional classroom. Given the hybrid nature of courses taught by the School of Infor-mation at the University of South Florida, a comparison can be made among the same students in class using different methods of class communication. Comparisons between graduate, under-graduate and student-athletes in School of Information courses can also be made. This paper ex-amines the differences experienced by students of varying cultural backgrounds in their …

Planned Flexibility For Course Reserves, Leetta M. Schmidt

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Decades-old innovation in course reserves supply has turned into cumbersome and duplicated processes. The need to improve services at the University of South Florida was augmented by changing platforms and systems university-wide. Service enhancements are often bombarded with unforeseen obstacles. By building in a little flexibility into course reserves service, one university was able to deal with year after year of system migrations.

Frequency, Patterns, And Preferences Of Lubricant Use During Anal Intercourse Within Male Sexual Partnerships In Lima, Peru: Implications For A Rectal Microbicide Hiv Prevention Intervention, Jesse L. Clark, Hector Salvatierra, Eddy R. Segura, Ximena Salazar, Kelika Konda, Jerome T. Galea, Jeffrey D. Klausner, Thomas J. Coates, Carlos F. Caceres

Social Work Faculty Publications

Understanding current practices of lubricant use during anal intercourse can help to assess the contexts for the introduction of topical rectal microbicides as an HIV prevention tool for men who have sex with men (MSM). We used quantitative and qualitative methods to assess: current patterns of lubricant use; preferred characteristics of commercial lubricant formulations; and social and behavioral contexts of lubricant use within male sexual partnerships in Lima, Peru. Between 2007 and 2008, we conducted a quantitative behavioral survey with 547 MSM followed by qualitative individual and group interviews with 36 MSM from Lima, Peru. Approximately half of all participants …

Overcoming Coloniality: The Potential Of South-South Dialogue About Citizenship, Participatory Democracy, And Development Between Brazil And India, Bernd Reiter Jan 2013

Overcoming Coloniality: The Potential Of South-South Dialogue About Citizenship, Participatory Democracy, And Development Between Brazil And India, Bernd Reiter

Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications

This chapter argues that North-South dialogue is heavily influenced by the colonial past and burdened by extreme power inequalities. Former colonizing nations control many of the agendas of such dialogue, exposing it to the risks of paternalism, post-colonialism, and tutelage. As a result, coloniality is a condition difficult to escape in north-south dialogue. South-south dialogue, on the other hand, is less implicated by this burden, thus offering a platform for a potentially free - and freeing – critical interchange of ideas and empirical examples that reflect subaltern experiences and provide opportunities for mutual learning. One area where this dialogue is …
