A Qualitative Examination Of University Of New Hampshire Student Impact On The Town Of Durham, New Hampshire, Audrey Hickey

University of New Hampshire students and Durham, New Hampshire residents have a historically contentious relationship that reached a low point in the early 2000s. On three occasions, university students flooded downtown Durham, vandalized stores and started altercations with police. Local newspaper reports and anecdotes assert that relations have improved since that time.

This study utilizes 39 semi-structured student, resident, business- owner and administrator interviews to examine the current state of the relationship. A brief overview of town-gown relations and a case study of student-resident relations at the University of Delaware is included to highlight the universality of the issues in …

There has been a significant amount of research done on the effect that advertising in the fashion and beauty industry has on women. By creating advertisements with unrealistic images of beauty, it has resulted in anxiety, low self-esteem, and low self-confidence in many women. Most of these negative emotions stems from unhappiness among body and appearance. Less research has been performed relating to cosmetics and how this can have an influence on women, and how women can use cosmetics to manipulate their appearance. This paper investigates the existence of asset price bubbles. It first gives a history of financial crises and asset bubbles around the world throughout history as a background to the issue and then moves into finding the reason why they are able to exist in a market with both rational and irrational participants. Then by looking at the historical data for the United States housing and stock markets sets bubble identification rules based on standard deviation bounds. Do You Really Love Me?: An Experimental Investigation Of Reassurance Seeking And Interpersonal Rejection, Kevin T. Cannon

The authors conducted an experiment to test the interpersonal model of depression (Coyne, 1976), and specifically the link between excessive reassurance seeking (ERS) and rejection. The present study involved college-aged romantic couples. Some participants were then manipulated into perceiving that their partner was seeking reassurance from them. Results support the main tenets of Coyne’s (1976) theory. Participants reported increased frustration and reduced felt closeness to dysphoric partners when they were led to believe that their partners were engaging in ERS. Effects on frustration were moderated by partners’ depression, while effects on felt closeness were partially mediated by frustration, yielding a …

Scandals at Penn State and Syracuse University have the world talking about mandatory reporting. There no debate in the academic community concerning the detrimental effects of child maltreatment and neglect, but the debate concerning mandatory reporting is ongoing. This study looks at the effectiveness of universal mandatory reporting of child maltreatment versus the current statute of mandated reporting for only certain professions in the states of New York and Pennsylvania. When Pennsylvania changed its legislation to a universal mandatory reporting law, it experienced a great increase, of 500%, in the number of substantiated reports of child maltreatment. This paper attempts to study white collar crime and the cost it has on the United States' economy. White collar crime has many ripple effects including job loss, stock price changes, consumer price increases, jail costs, and court costs, and each of these comes at an enormous cost to society. Overall, this paper argues that more resources are needed for white collar crime prevention in order to save a large sum of money each year.

This theoretical study examines the roles of digital information warfare participants and asks what roles do general users have in conflicts over digital censorship, privacy, and security. The paper presents three contemporary information warfare case studies and examines the players, victims, and propaganda strategies involved in each. The study concludes that mass digital illiteracy grants control to a small elite who determine the outcomes of information warfare conflicts.

Religiosity, Identity, And Depression In Late Adolescence: A Longitudinal Study, Erin Sandler

In this study, longitudinal associations among religiosity, identity style, identity commitment, and depression were examined in a sample of late adolescents. Online survey data were collected in two waves with an approximate six-week interval. Correlations demonstrated that high levels of negative aspects of religiosity, such as negative religious coping, predicted high levels of depression. Other aspects of religiosity, such as positive religious coping, did not predict depression. In addition, high levels of diffuse-avoidant identity style predicted high levels of depression, and high levels of identity commitment predicted low levels of depression. One of the most baffling questions in delinquency literature is why some adolescents engage in these rule-violating behaviors while others refrain. Some researchers have found support for a link between moral reasoning and rule-violating behaviors (Blasi, 1980). The legal socialization model includes legal attitudes as the mediator between the two (Cohn, Bucolo, Rebellon & Van Gundy, 2010). The main goal of this research paper was to examine whether the New Hampshire funding system of public education is effective in providing equal educational opportunities to all children. The findings from the quantitative and qualitative analyses of this research study suggest that, despite a historically increasing role of the state government, New Hampshire’s funding system of public education has not proven to be effective in providing the opportunity of an adequate education to students in poor districts, and gaps in student achievement persist between poor and wealthier districts. The purpose of this study was to address differences in self-actualization, satisfaction with life, and motivation that exist between individuals in careers of varying levels of creativity. Roughly 330 participants mainly from the United States and India took part in the study. Participants completed a survey on Amazon Mechanical Turk in which they rated their career as not at all creative, somewhat creative, or highly creative. The survey included questions from the Brief Index of Self-Actualization by Sumerlin and Budrick and the Satisfaction with Life scale by Emmons et al.
