Comparing Hospital Costs & Lengths Of Stay For Cancer Patients In New York State Comprehensive Cancer Centers Vs. Non-Designated Academic Centers & Community Hospitals, Ryan Fodero

Economics Student Scholarship

This paper explores differences in costs and lengths of stay for cancer patients admitted to National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, non-designated academic medical centers, and community hospitals in New York State using patient-level data from the New York State Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System Hospital Inpatient Discharges dataset from 2017-2019. We employ ordinary least squares and Poisson regressions to compare hospital costs and length of stay for cancer patients, controlling for hospital type, patient demographics, and patient health. Inpatient costs were 27% higher, but length of stay was 12% shorter, in comprehensive cancer centers relative to community hospitals. …

Networks Of Care: An Autoethnography On These Innovative Products Of The Migrant Journey As Outlets For One's Development Of Citizenship, Catalina Betancur Velez

Global Studies Student Scholarship

What are the factors that influence a migrant’s understanding and development of citizenship as a sentiment in relation to the government and place in a community? Theories about citizenship emphasize the role of law and law enforcement as mediators of the dynamics between migrants and their feeling of citizenship. However, they often disregard or downplay the humanity in the development of one’s identity as a citizen or a non-citizen of a country. This paper approaches the study of citizenship through an autoethnography, which provides a unique opportunity to research and analyze the complexities of the process of one’s construction of …

“The More People’S Stories That We Learn, The More We Can Wrap Around Our Support”: How Postoperative Bariatric Surgery Patients Use Online Communities, Breisha George

Health Policy & Management Student Scholarship

Bariatric surgery (also called weight loss surgery) is often thought of as a one-day medical procedure. However, after surgery, there are long-term physical and psychological changes that each patient manages. The goal of this study was to gain deeper insights into how a patient navigates their postoperative experience after bariatric surgery, specifically examining their use of online bariatric communities. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Three major themes were identified: (1) Mental Health, (2) Belonging to Community, (3) Support. Each theme incudes several sub-themes, showcasing a range of helpful and harmful experiences from engaging with these online …

In their very first issue published on November 16, 1935, The Cowl staff explained the purpose of the novel student newspaper: “Primarily, the COWL exists to serve the student body, not simply as a news organ, but more fundamentally as a means to foster and intensify an enthusiatic Providence College spirit and loyalty.” Since its founding, The Cowl has attempted to be just that, reporting news and welcoming discussion and debate from members of its staff and members of the larger Providence College community.

Unfortunately, however, the mission of the College can, and often has, run contrary to the mission …

Dementia: Review Of Long Term Care Facilities, Theresa Staab May 2022

Dementia: Review Of Long Term Care Facilities, Theresa Staab

Health Policy & Management Student Scholarship

Dementia is a disease in which people lose parts or, in the case of more severe cases, all of their cognitive functioning, negatively impacting their daily lives. Remembering, thinking, and reasoning are examples of these functions. As dementia progresses in a person, performing tasks becomes challenging, bringing families to consider long-term care institutions as an alternative to informal caregiving. Families look at the combination of characteristics and socio-cultural background of an institution's patients and formal caregivers before entrusting their loved one to their care (Yaffe et al., 2002). The World Health Organization states that "more than 55 million people live …

This study examines the relationship between autism and mental health as well as affection rates amongst children. I analyze data from the 2019 National Survey of Children’s Health, a nationally representative sample of children aged 0 to 17, which was collected by the US Census Bureau. Multivariate binary logistic models reveal that children with autism are significantly less likely to be affectionate toward others. I also find that children diagnosed with autism are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety and depression, even …

My research examines factors that influence adherence to public health guidelines during the ongoing pandemic. I apply quantitative methodology to investigate how positions of social privilege, select news sources, and beliefs in political conspiracy theories impact adherence to public health instructions and vaccine trust. I used the Sixth Wave of the Baylor Religion Survey, a national random sample, and analyzed data using multivariate regressions. The findings of the research reveal that higher positions of social privilege and subscription to conspiracy …

Recent research indicates that social media usage is addictive both physically and psychologically. Due to the prevalence of social media, our group specifically wanted to study how its usage impacted Providence College students’ mental health, physical health, and communication skills (both in-person and online communication skills). We found that social media usage negatively affects students’ mental and physical health, with females being more impacted than males. However, we did not find evidence to support …

This year, with the help of my faculty advisor, Dr. Jennifer Van Reet, and the Providence College Center for Engaged Learning, I conducted a study evaluating hopefulness in children and college students. I chose to study hope because of an internship experience I had at the Department of Children and Families. I was interested in discovering what variables may be able to increase hope in children, while also looking at the developmental progression of hopefulness over time.

Hope is both the belief that you can achieve your goals, …

The purpose of this study is to examine how an individual‚ race, socioeconomic status, and their household food security are correlated with physical and mental health outcomes. We propose that those with lower socioeconomic status and food security, as well as Non-Whites, are negatively correlated with better physical and mental health outcomes.
