A Quantitative Content Analysis On Juvenile Crime Rates In Comparison To Student Outcome Data In A Saint Louis Metropolitan High School Setting, Arron Nakia Whitt Sr. Jul 2024

A Quantitative Content Analysis On Juvenile Crime Rates In Comparison To Student Outcome Data In A Saint Louis Metropolitan High School Setting, Arron Nakia Whitt Sr.

Dissertations

Mental health is one of the most polarizing topics of the 21st Century. Mental health affects those from all economic statuses, races, age ranges, and genders. Since mental health can affect the youth population, the researcher investigated two Saint Louis metropolitan school districts that were listed in provisional accreditation status with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MoDESE).

The purpose of this research was to identify relationships between the graduation rates, dropout rates, and enrollment rates of high school students and compare these data to the crime statistics obtained from the Saint Louis metropolitan juvenile courts. The researcher gathered …

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford Dec 2023

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford

The Confluence

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that negative attitudes towards bisexual people (bi-negativity) exists within the LGBTQ+ and heterosexual communities and to determine if levels of bi-negativity are higher within the LGBTQ+ group. I administered the Gender-Based Attitudes Towards Bisexuality (GBAB) Scale by Nielsen et al. (2022) to measure bi-negativity using an online survey. The results, obtained from 87 participants who identify as LGBTQ+ and 121 participants who identify as heterosexual between the ages of 18 and 80, support my hypothesis that bi-negativity exists within both groups. However, contrary to my second hypothesis, higher levels of bi-negativity were …

Six Feet Apart: A Deeper Look At The Psychological Effects Of Covid-19, Ellen M. Komp, Stephanie Afful May 2023

Six Feet Apart: A Deeper Look At The Psychological Effects Of Covid-19, Ellen M. Komp, Stephanie Afful

The Confluence

There has been little research conducted on the impact that COVID-19 has had on people, both at an individual and group level. The aim of our study was to see what effect COVID-19 stress versus general health stress has on collective self-esteem and how that translates to political values. Collins and colleagues (2021) studied how political identity impacts people’s level of concern regarding COVID-19, specifically that those who identified as Democrats experienced more distress surrounding COVID-19. Social Identity Theory explains that stressors can result in lower collective self-esteem (Crocker & Park, 2003). To examine this, we compared collective self-esteem and …

Raise The Age: Perceptions Of Missouri Juvenile Justice Actors, Angela M. Collins, Maisha N. Cooper Feb 2023

Raise The Age: Perceptions Of Missouri Juvenile Justice Actors, Angela M. Collins, Maisha N. Cooper

Missouri Policy Journal

In 2018, the Missouri General Assembly joined the ranks of forty-six other states and D.C. in the Raise the Age movement and raised the upper age of jurisdiction of the juvenile court from 17 to 18 years old. Senate Bill 793 was signed into law by Governor Eric Greitens on June 1, 2018, and was set to go into effect on January 1, 2021. Similar to other state and county level juvenile justice stakeholders, those in Missouri have expressed concerns over the potential fiscal challenges, increases in workload, and issues related to the allocation of resources and programming within the …

Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoë Sweaney Nov 2022

Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoë Sweaney

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The following paper summarizes the implications, processes, and preliminary findings from a research study conducted by an undergraduate psychology student at Lindenwood University. The study experimentally investigated the relationship between a juror’s socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood that they would choose to convict a randomly selected defendant. It was hypothesized that a participant of a higher SES would be more likely to convict a defendant than would a participant of a lower SES. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, participants (N=13) posing as jurors completed an online survey in which they were tasked with evaluating the details of …

Andragogy: The Common Thread In The Teaching Of Adults In Colleges Of Education, Criminal Justice, And Health Management, Grant J. Shostak, Larry Acker, Vanessa Vandergraaf

Faculty Scholarship

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought dramatic changes to higher education. Students and educators face challenges never anticipated, including switching classes from on-ground to online and back again, mental fatigue, stress, and burnout. Faculty across disciplines may turn to Andragogy to best teach college students to inform their teaching practices. This paper demonstrates how professors from education, criminal justice, and healthcare management have used andragogical techniques in their classrooms.

Modern Policing, Reform Efforts, And Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practices For Eyewitness Identification Procedures, Joseph M. Zlatic, Jeanie Thies Dec 2021

Modern Policing, Reform Efforts, And Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practices For Eyewitness Identification Procedures, Joseph M. Zlatic, Jeanie Thies

Missouri Policy Journal

This article discusses various avenues to law enforcement reform that have been proposed, especially in regard to adoption of evidence-based practices. The authors advocate for specific reforms regarding eyewitness identification policies and protocols, and offer an overview of the supporting research. A brief history of the challenges to police reform is presented with an emphasis on how political factors stymie success. The authors assert that expanding use of model policies for eyewitness identification, either through legislation or appealing to agencies to voluntarily adopt such policies, is relatively apolitical and requires minimal to moderate cost and effort.

Strengthening The Missouri Model Of Juvenile Justice: Missouri Division Of Youth Services Staff Perspectives, Sarah Kuborn, Carol Kellison, Kristen N. Sobba, Darrey Robins Sep 2020

Strengthening The Missouri Model Of Juvenile Justice: Missouri Division Of Youth Services Staff Perspectives, Sarah Kuborn, Carol Kellison, Kristen N. Sobba, Darrey Robins

Missouri Policy Journal

The Missouri Division of Youth Services (DYS) approach to juvenile justice has become a national model, often referred to as “The Missouri Model.” Missouri’s approach has produced positive outcomes including satisfactory discharges, high law-abiding rates, and low rates of recidivisms. Although a model for other states, the Missouri DYS Model lacks an essential component of youth rehabilitation: the family. Based on the suggestion made by Ringle and colleagues to blend out-of-home residential care with family based in-home aftercare services, this study aimed to explore Missouri DYS staff perspectives on merging Intensive Family Reunification Services into the current Missouri DYS Model …

Do Violent Video Games Stimulate Aggressive Tendencies?, Megan Hamilton

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study looked at the relationship between violent video game (VVG) play and aggressive tendencies. Participants were required to be at least 18 years of age or older and were recruited through flyers in the Library and Academic Resource Center and Young Hall on the Lindenwood University campus, as well as through the Lindenwood Participant Pool. Participants took a pretest on Qualtrics measuring aggressive tendencies and after the pretest, participants were systematically chosen to either play Grand Theft Auto V (GTAV); (Rockstar Games, 2014) or Stardew Valley (Barone & Sickhead Games, 2016). Following gameplay, participants then took a posttest on …
