Impact Of The Change In Payments On The Actual And Perceived Behaviors Of Medical Care Providers Authors, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale Aug 2021

Impact Of The Change In Payments On The Actual And Perceived Behaviors Of Medical Care Providers Authors, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale

Business Analytics Faculty Publications

Prior literature established the link between a person aging out of a parent's insurance coverage at age nineteen and a significant decrease in insurance coverage of those nineteen-year-old young adults. This paper furthers this line of research by establishing a statically significant change in the payment burden of the various sources that comprise the total payment received by the medical care providers treating young adults who have aged out of their parent's insurance. The empirical method used is the regression discontinuity framework. The impact of the change in the providers' payment sources on the providers' behavior (supply-side) and the patients' …

Greek Myth Or Fact? The Role Of Greek Houses In Alcohol And Drug Violations On American Campuses, Manu Raghav, Timothy Diette

Economics and Management Faculty publications

Greek-letter student social groups, better known as fraternities and sororities, are a ubiquitous feature on many American higher education campuses. These organizations, especially fraternities, have a reputation for encouraging unruly and improper behavior among both members and non-members. This paper investigates the effect of the degree of prevalence of these Greek organizations at a campus, as measured by the percentage of students who are members of fraternities and sororities, on the instances of liquor and drug law violations on campuses, as measured by the number of arrests for liquor and drug laws violations. Using a unique dataset, which combines data …

Eye-Tracking Study: Systematic Effects Of Task Instructions On Selective Attention And Inductive Learning, Kumiko Nakajima, Olivia Dickinson, Michael E. Roberts Phd

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Participants studied paintings with respective task instructions and were subsequently tested on identification performance for trained paintings as well as new paintings by the same artists. Eye tracking analyses indicate that each task instruction led to distinctive fixation patterns for the paintings, which may influence inductive learning performance. Generally, participants given the alternative pattern of the instructions performed significantly better than those who received the successive pattern of instructions both in trained and new paintings.

Problematic Social Media Use: Are There Gender Differences In Control And Craving, Aaniyah Childs, Robert West Phd Jul 2021

Problematic Social Media Use: Are There Gender Differences In Control And Craving, Aaniyah Childs, Robert West Phd

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Problematic social media use is characterized by being overly concerned about social media, having an uncontrollable urge to use social media, and devoting ample amounts of time to social media that impairs other important life areas. According to Statista, 15% of people from 23-38 years of age admit they demonstrate problematic social media use, and 30% of all the participants surveyed admit they somewhat demonstrate problematic social media use. Problematic social media use is a growing problem, especially during a time where the world took a momentary pause and people turned to social media during quarantine amidst the pandemic. The …

Testing Inductive Learning Effects From Changing Attentional Focus With Training Instructions, Bradon Collins, Emily Gost, Michael E. Roberts Phd

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Participants studied a variety of artists’ paintings with different instructions regarding which elements of the paintings to focus on. The identification and recognition of trained and novel paintings was then tested. The additional instructions did not significantly alter memory performance or inductive learning .

A Model Of Flexible Feature Learning For Segmentation And Unitization, Ziyi Chen, Michael E. Roberts Phd Jul 2021

A Model Of Flexible Feature Learning For Segmentation And Unitization, Ziyi Chen, Michael E. Roberts Phd

Annual Student Research Poster Session

The form of visual feature learning called segmentation involves learning components from whole objects, whereas unitization is learning whole objects via repeated exposure to the key parts. While some computer vision approaches get similar results as empirical findings from humans, the models are not very biologically plausible. This project presents a web-accessible version of a neural network model of flexible visual feature learning developed by Roberts and Goldstone. Here we use HTML and javascript to create a website which allows users to draw and train with their own input patterns, adjust parameters, and then test the features learned by the …

Mental Health Among College Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Study, Jillian Meyer, Lizzie Bell, Michael E. Roberts Phd

Annual Student Research Poster Session

This research project was a continuation of research conducted in PSY215 Research Methods from the Fall 2020 Semester and subsequently extended in Spring 2021 via Asher funds to collect additional data. The purpose of the research was twofold: conduct a longitudinal study that examines how college students’ mental health has been impacted by the COVID-19 virus from the Fall 2020 semester to the Spring 2021 semester; a second goal was to obtain a racially diverse sample (expanding beyond our initial cross-section) and to also examine factors such as the impact of big vs smaller universities’ administrative responses to COVID-19, and …

The Effect Of The Global Financial Crisis On The Cost Structure And Double Bottom Line Goal Of Microfinance Institutions, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale, Todd A. Watkins Jul 2021

The Effect Of The Global Financial Crisis On The Cost Structure And Double Bottom Line Goal Of Microfinance Institutions, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale, Todd A. Watkins

Business Analytics Faculty Publications

The objective of Microfinance institutions (MFIs) is often two-fold; the so-called double bottom line of seeking financial return sustainability, while also maximizing the social impact of their services on the lives of the poor individuals they serve. The pursuit of the social impact bottom line puts microfinance institutions in a peculiar position with regards to the response of their cost structure to the global financial crisis. This paper begins by investigating the impact of the global financial crisis on the cost structure, and cost inefficiencies of MFIs given their double bottom line pursuits. Overall, it appears that achieving growth in …

Moral Psychology And Politics: Evolved Moral Intuitions And Their Links To Contemporary Political Issues, Greta Raser

Student Research

This literature review thesis explores the evolutionary based theory of moral psychology called the Moral Foundations Theory and its innate processes that serve as factors in moral judgments regarding contemporary political issues. This thesis describes the theoretical foundations underlying the Moral Foundations approach, and then proceeds to review empirical sources on its general applicability. It then examines how the approach may be applied to political ideology, as well as the connection to the emotion of disgust. Next, the review continues to explore relations between pathogen and sexual disgust sensitivity and politics. The final section of the thesis body takes a …

The Ethnographically Visible And Violence, Vivienne Edwards Apr 2021

The Ethnographically Visible And Violence, Vivienne Edwards

Student Research

The likely cause for the amount of cruelty in American immigration policy is the utter divorce of government from ethics. When policymakers convene and concoct strategies to curb illegal movement, there is no consideration of ethics. The discussion is of economics, public opinion, numbers, human beings by the headcount. If ethnographic evidence is cited at all, politicians spice up the rhetoric with the image of cut chain link fences – nationalized orifices open to invasion, and invasion by brown people no less. But otherwise, it’s just business. If people die? If people disappear? If children never return home? If people …

Communication Ethics Of “Sharenting” : A Content Analysis Of Instagram Mom Meso-Influencers, Maddy Mctigue

Student Research

Among the many concerns of social media, “sharenting,” or parents oversharing about their children online, is becoming increasingly prevalent. Millions of children are growing up on the internet with little-to-no control of their digital narrative, instead becoming fashionable or even lucrative props on their parent’s social media platforms. The purpose of the study was to explore how much and what type of sharenting parents post on social media. This study explores five key elements of sharenting through a content analysis. Researchers coded 10 Instagram mom meso-influencer accounts within a 30-day timeframe and determined how many posts were embarrassing, intrusive, revealing, …

On The Outside Looking In: A Global Doula Response To Covid-19, Angela Castañeda, Julie Johnson Searcy

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

From around the world, doulas report the impact of new COVID-19 restrictions on their ability to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant people and their families. In a qualitative survey conducted in March and April 2020, we heard from over 500 doulas in 24 countries. Doulas practicing across the world revealed rapid changes to hospital policies. Even accounting for different public health responses across countries, the doulas in our study pointed to one common theme - their absence at births and the subsequent need to support birthing people virtually. In a follow-up survey and in interviews we …

Since 2015, the Trasimeno Archaeological Project has been investigating a Roman villa located between the localities of Gioiella and Vaiano in the territory of Castiglione del Lago. A preliminary surface survey of the site (2015) indicated that the villa was occupied from the 2nd century B.C. through the 3rd century A.D. While there is extensive evidence for an Etruscan presence in the region, the Gioiella-Vaiano Villa is the first Roman period site to be scientifically investigated. Of particular interest is understanding the changing role of the villa in the economic and social life of Central Italy from the mid- Republican …
