With the cost of college on the rise, and students increasingly viewing college as a pathway to a successful career, colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate evidence of their effectiveness. High-impact learning experiences, such as internships, study abroad, service-learning, capstones and undergraduate research, have emerged as a promising practice to enhance student development during college; however, few studies have examined the impact of such practices on post-graduate indicators of success. Service-learning is a pedagogical technique in which students apply course content to meet a community need. Students are also provided with an opportunity for reflection which results in an array of academic, psychological, and social benefits. This study will highlight the benefits students derive from participating in service-learning exercises in lower and upper division psychology courses. Empirical data suggest that service-learning activities benefit students in both lower and upper division psychology courses; however, students in upper division courses may obtain enhanced benefits. The Lacy School of Business at Butler University (Indianapolis) has embraced an experiential approach for the school’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program by combining traditional classroom instruction with opportunities for students to learn through partnerships with local businesses. Beginning with the MBA Gateway Experience course, graduate students are tasked with conducting team research to present informed recommendations to business owners and community leaders. The related support provided by the Butler Business Librarian for MBA students complements the experiential nature of the program by engaging students with the real-world challenges of collecting and evaluating business information for applied problem-solving. …

Applied learning plays an integral role in social work education. From the beginning of the program, social work majors complete a required 30 hour applied learning in a school setting where they mentor children. In order to better prepare the social work and other majors for the learning opportunity, this semester a 2 hour mentor training (that is offered to community members who mentor in the Kankakee School District) was required at the start of the semester. My dissertation emphasizes a cognitive account of multimodality that explicitly integrates experiential knowledge work into the rhetorical pedagogy that informs so many composition and technical communication programs. In these disciplines, multimodality is widely conceived in terms of what Gunther Kress calls “socialsemiotic” modes of communication shaped primarily by culture. In the cognitive and neurolinguistic theories of Vittorio Gallese and George Lakoff, however, multimodality is described as a key characteristic of our bodies’ sensory-motor systems which link perception to action and action to meaning, grounding all communicative acts in knowledge shaped through body-engaged experience.
