Plasma-generated compounds (PGCs) such as plasma-processed air (PPA) or plasma-treated water (PTW) offer an increasingly important alternative for the treatment of microorganisms in hard-to-reach areas found in several industrial applications including the food industry. To this end, we studied the antimicrobial capacity of plasma-treated water on the vitality and biolm formation of Listeria monocytogenes, a common food spoilage microorganism. This study’s objective was to estimate net returns and return risk for antimicrobial metaphylaxis options to manage bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in high health-risk feedlot cattle. The effectiveness of antimicrobials for metaphylaxis varies by cattle population. How differing antimicrobial effectiveness translates to net return profitability for heterogeneous cattle populations is less understood. Net returns and return risk were assessed using a net return simulation model adapted to allow for heterogeneity in high health-risk cattle placement characteristics and antimicrobial choice to control BRD. Objectives: Explore perceptions and attitudes of nurses in regard to antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), their roles as nurses, and identify differences in perceptions and attitudes across paediatric and adult settings. Methods: Electronic survey administered to nursing staff across three public Australian tertiary institutions with AMS facilitated by a shared electronic approval and decision support system. Results: Overall 65% (93/142) of nurses who completed the survey were familiar with the term AMS, and 75% recognised that they were expected to have a role alongside other disciplines, including ward pharmacists (paediatric 88%, adult 73%; p = 0.03). The multi-million-dollar medical uniform industry has not utilized advancements in garment and textile technology that could positively impact the protection of healthcare professionals and patients. In most cases the uniforms meet basic requirements – they clothe the professional in a recognizable way. Little innovation in design, function and performance, has been applied to these garments. An investigation of the essential oil (EO) and the crude MeOH extract of a Bhutanese variety of Ajania nubigena using GC/GC-MS and NMR found the following: a) one kg of the dried plant material contained 0.7% w/w EO; b) 44 of the 53 GC-FID peaks of the EO were identified with (3R,6R)-linalool oxide acetate (75.8 %) as the major constituent (chemotype II) and chamazulene as a new sub-chemotype; c) purification of the EO furnished (3R,6R)-linalool oxide acetate (1), chamazulene (2), (E)-2-(2,4-hexadiynylidene)-1,6-dioxaspiro[4,4]non-3-ene (3), and (Z)-2-(2,4-hexadinylidene)-1,6-dioxaspiro[4,4]non-3-ene (4); d) from the crude MeOH extract, four flavonoid compounds: 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propan-1-one (5), oxyanin B (6), luteolin …

Antimalarial, Anticancer, Antimicrobial Activities And Chemical Constituents Of Essential Oil From The Aerial Parts Of Cyperus Kyllingia Endl, Stephen G. Pyne, Boonsom Liawruangrath, Saisunee Liawruangrath, M Garson, S Khamsan, A Teerawutkulrag

The chemical constituents of the essential oil from Cyperus kyllingia Endl. were analyzed by a GC, GC-MS. Twenty-three compounds were identified, accounting for 93.75% of the total oil that consisted mainly of oxygenated sesquiterpenes (53.52%), particularly sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (38.97%), and carboxylic acid (1.26%). The most representative compounds were -cadinol (19.32%), caryophyllene oxide (12.17%), -muurolol (11.58%), -humulene (9.85%), and -atlantone (6.07%). The oil showed significant activities against Plasmodium falcipalum (K1, multi drug resistant strain) and NCI-H187 (Small Cell Lung Cancer) with the IC50 values of 7.52 and 7.72 g/mL, respectively.
