Model Minorities: Asian Americans And The White-Black Racial Paradigm, Jason Tom
Model Minorities: Asian Americans And The White-Black Racial Paradigm, Jason Tom
Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the racial wedge driven by Whites between Blacks and Asian Americans during the Cold War on to the present. Model minorities is a term coined by whites in the 1960s to suppress Civil Rights protests and Black demands. By elevating a minority group through success stories, whites constructed a means to suppress Black people’s organizing for change against systemic racism and oppression.

School Libraries Get "Graphic": An Analysis Of Graphic Novels In The School Library Collection, Rebecca Lacoste
SLIS Connecting
Graphic novels have been recognized by many professionals, researchers, and educators as a major factor in increasing student engagement. The purpose of this research is to analyze a middle school library's statistical data before and after the addition of graphic novels into the library collection. The study also analyzes the growth of scholarly literature related to graphic novels and school libraries. The compilation of this research should provide insight to school librarians, teachers, administrators, and researchers on the value and successes associated with the inclusion of graphic novels in the school library collection.

Library Usage By Faculty Members Of Benguet State University, Noel W. Cabfilan, Marjorie C. Ricardo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study's objectives were to determine Benguet State University faculty members' general impression of the library resources and their usage of these resources. To answer these objectives, questions on faculty members' satisfaction with the library resources, frequency of usage, purposes of using the library resources, reasons for not using the library resources, reasons of not being able to find the resources they are looking for in the library and suggestions for library development in terms of library resources were asked.
It was found out that the majority of the faculty members have used the library resources at least once-a-term. On …
Ishi, Briet's Antelope, And The Documentality Of Human Documents, Martin I. Nord
Ishi, Briet's Antelope, And The Documentality Of Human Documents, Martin I. Nord
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Ishi, the “last wild Indian in North America,” was “discovered” in 1911 and spent the last years of his life living in an anthropology museum. There he was studied by anthropologists and viewed by the public as a living exhibit. In this paper, I take some initial steps in arguing that Ishi, the person, became a document to most people. The similarities between Ishi and Suzanne Briet’s hypothetical antelope, newly discovered and placed in a zoo, are eerie. Ishi, like the antelope, is brought into public knowledge as both an initial document and a wide variety of secondary documents derived …

Primary Rights And The Inequalities Of E-Book Access, Roën F. Janyk, Arielle R. Lomness
Charleston Library Conference
The e-book landscape is in a constant state of flux. More recent developments include new acquisition models, advances in platform usability and navigation, more lenient DRM provisions, and improvements to simultaneous user access licenses. However, what has not been addressed recently are the inequalities in e-book access for libraries across the world due to ‘primary rights.’ Territorial rights versus world rights is a licensing issue affecting libraries globally, and yet little is being done to address the inequalities of access. Join our discussion that will examine the ‘unavailable in your country’ message libraries often see alongside e-book purchase options, review …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Prisons serve as a place where criminal behaviors are suppressed. The need for these set of individuals to gather skills which help them remain positive right in the four walls of the prison yard and after serving their jail terms cannot be overemphasized. It is for this reason that the team set out to develop a programme aimed at inculcating literacy and creative writing skills that will help them participate more effectively when they finish their jail term. The aim of the study was to explore the importance and contributions of library resources and services to the lives of prison …

The First Amendment And The Right(S) Of Publicity, Jennifer E. Rothman, Robert C. Post
All Faculty Scholarship
The right of publicity protects persons against unauthorized uses of their identity, most typically their names, images, or voices. The right is in obvious tension with freedom of speech. Yet courts seeking to reconcile the right with the First Amendment have to date produced only a notoriously confused muddle of inconsistent constitutional doctrine. In this Article, we suggest a way out of the maze. We propose a relatively straightforward framework for analyzing how the right of publicity should be squared with First Amendment principles.
At the root of contemporary constitutional confusion lies a failure to articulate the precise state interests …

Transcribing Discourse and Diversity in Saratoga Springs, New York
Ralph W. Grasso Jr. (1933- ) was born and raised in Saratoga Springs, New York to Italian immigrant parents. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Korea and Japan. After the military, he returned to Saratoga Springs and settled with his family. The interview includes his memories of West Side childhood activities, such as playing pranks, sledding injuries, serving as an altar boy at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, shining shoes on Broadway, and assisting his father at the family’s store on Beekman Street. Entrepreneurial Skills And The Child: One Way The Librarian Can Make A Difference, Margaret Nwakago Ngwuchukwu Ph.D, Chiegonu Bridget Nwachi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Entrepreneurship is considered as sin qua non to the well being of an individual, most especially in a developing economy like Nigeria where unemployment and quest for white Collar jobs is on the increase. It then becomes necessary to inculcate the entrepreneurial spirit from the cradle. As a child cannot walk immediately the child is born, so will an individual who does not have the necessary entrepreneurial skills at childhood stage cannot or may find it difficult to be self employed at adult stage. At teething stage, little attention is paid to the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills. Librarians have a …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Nigerian’s Children’s literature is one valuable tool for addressing social issues in Nigeria. However, it is often neglected due to its simplicity and it has implication for the future of any nation. This paper discusses the concept of Nigerian children’s literature and how it can be used as a method for addressing social issues in Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to identify these social issues which include gender discrimination, insecurity, corruption and sexual immorality, the causes of these social ills, the implications of these social issues, the relationship between social issues and children’s literature and also proffer children’s …

Processing Coercion In A First, Non-Dominant Language: Mandarin-English Heritage Bilinguals, Christina N. Dadurian
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Recent work in heritage language grammars has shown variability in L1 competence, despite high proficiency in both languages. While sources of variation have been debated, little attention has been given to the role of language dominance. This thesis uses a self-paced listening task to explicitly investigate the roles of language dominance and pragmatic competence in how heritage speakers of Mandarin Chinese process aspectual coercion in their non-dominant home language, as compared to late bilinguals. Specifically, constructions that vary in acceptability and salience in input between Mandarin and English are tested: Iterative coercion, complement event coercion of entity NPs, and perfective …
Vocational Expectations From Adolescence To Early Adulthood: An Integrative Exploration Of Their Formation, Consistency, Change, And Predictive Value, Leah Hope Schultz
Vocational Expectations From Adolescence To Early Adulthood: An Integrative Exploration Of Their Formation, Consistency, Change, And Predictive Value, Leah Hope Schultz
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Career expectations show predictive validity for future job selection and work outcomes above traditional vocational interest inventories, yet are rarely tracked longitudinally. The current study explored characteristics of adolescents’ freely reported career expectations by examining their formation, typical trajectories of their development, individual differences in their development, and their utility as predictors of life outcomes. Though some past research has examined longitudinal trends in adolescents’ career expectations, this was the first study to assign dimensional RIASEC scores to participants’ expected occupations rather than a single categorical code. Using data from 21,444 students in the High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS 09:16; …

María E. Sotomayor
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2020
Under the Supervision of Professor Merry Wiesner-Hanks
Since the middle of the twentieth century, Puerto Rico has had the highest, or nearly the highest, rate of sterilization in the world. The reasons for this have been examined from many perspectives, but how this has affected Puerto Rican women has rarely been discussed nor have their voices been heard. This study focuses on the long-term effects of female sterilization on Puerto Rican women, and their perception about their options for contraceptive …
Star Wars, Parasocial Relationships And Breakups, And The Force…Of Fandom, Alexandria P. Sutherland
Star Wars, Parasocial Relationships And Breakups, And The Force…Of Fandom, Alexandria P. Sutherland
Masters Theses
As we live our lives in an increasingly growing digital world, like-minds tend to gather. These like-minds, when gathered around a media franchise, become known as a fandom. Fandom culture can often shape an individual’s identity, as they become more heavily engrossed in the lore surrounding the media. Permeating this individual identity is the group identity, which allows for the fandom to be labeled as a community. When belonging to a very popular media’s fandom, such as Star Wars, it is rather easy to become completely engrossed in the characters and their stories, long after the credits roll, and …

Report On The Visit Of Prof. And Mrs. Josef Hromádka To The U.S.A., 1966, John Heidbrink
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Professor Josef L. Hromádka (referred to as JLH in the report) was a theologian of the Church of the Czech Brethren who took refuge in the USA during the Nazi conquest of his native Czechoslovakia and taught at Princeton Theological Seminary. He made what for many seemed a surprising decision to return to Prague after the communist coup d’etat in 1948. Soon he became the best known Protestant theologian on the other side of the “Iron Curtain” as he interpreted communism as a wave of a promising future to which Christians need to adjust in order to assist in the …
A Citation Analysis About Scholarship On Zines, Anne Hays
A Citation Analysis About Scholarship On Zines, Anne Hays
Publications and Research
INTRODUCTION Zine scholarship is a relatively new academic field that has emerged since the late 1990’s. Now that two decades have passed since the publication of Stephen Duncombe’s seminal text, Notes From Underground, it is possible to take a landscape view of how and why zine scholars have studied zines in peer-reviewed journal publications. Knowing how scholars have studied zines can teach us about how zines and zine culture have contributed to academic knowledge. We can also learn which subjects are understudied as zine scholars continue to investigate these curious ephemeral print objects. METHODS This study uses citation analysis …

The Qualitative Report
In this article, we present a project that explored the application of an established qualitative methodology to a novel source of data: microblog postings on the social media platform Twitter, also known as tweets. In particular, we adapted Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR; Hill, Thompson, & Williams, 1997) for use in this analysis. The coinciding aim of the project was to study the cultural impasses that seemed to characterize U.S. society surrounding the 2016 presidential election. Publicly available tweets bearing the hashtag #2A were selected for examination; this hashtag indicated the user’s intention to direct the posting to the attention of …

Black Identity, Representation, And Identification In Comic Book Movies, Ayo Mckinney
XULAneXUS
The study of Black representation in comic book movies involving the variables representation, Black identity, and identification has never been done before. Black representation in comic book movies is a significant topic of study due to the prevalence of comic book movies in popular culture, because of the increasingly diverse casts of such films, and the impacts representation can have psychologically, socially, and historically. The researcher hypothesized that Xavier University of Louisiana students would identify more with comic book movie characters of the same race, and that stronger Black identity would be related to higher dissatisfaction with current Black representation …
