Stakeholders in the information community recognize the challenges surrounding user authentication in the context of licensed information resources. Resource Access in the 21st Century (RA21) is one cross-sector initiative that is intended to reduce those challenges for both academic libraries as well as content and technology providers. Further collaboration by stakeholders may assuage some of the hesitations regarding RA21.

The use of social media in scholarly communication has grown in recent years, and consequently, scholars’ uses of social media has gained importance as a research topic.The aim of this article is to shed light on the role of social media in scholars’ work. The research presents findings from a survey (N=528) conducted in Finland in late 2016. There exists no prior research on the role and uses social media among Finnish scholars. This research specifically focuses on the perceived role of social media in information seeking and sharing. We also study the differences between disciplines, age groups, and positions. …

Although Institutional repositories have been used as a strategy to improve the access to traditional scholarly content (such as e-prints) very often, their role in scholarly publishing has been discussed for a long time. Like a road trip, building and sustaining an open repository is rich with anticipation, road maps, detours, persistence, perseverance, and finally, a deep sense of accomplishment for weathering the experiences and reaching a destination. Dartmouth’s repository road trip has been long and winding, but in 2017 the Library launched Open Dartmouth: Faculty Open Access on Digital Commons. After a long journey, this seemed like the primary destination, but like most road trips, the destination was the start of the next journey: sustaining growth and participation to continue to build this valuable open resource.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) is an institution with 2 residential campuses: 1 in Daytona Beach, Florida and one in Prescott, Arizona. ERAU also has a Worldwide presence through 125 campuses located on military bases and within the private business sector. The ERAU Worldwide Campus doesn’t stop with physical locations, however. It encompasses an online campus with virtual learning opportunities. The degrees offered through all of our campuses range from certificate programs through doctoral studies.

Evaluating The Impact Of The University Open Access Publication Fund, Svetlana Korolev

This study describes the University Open Access Publication Fund from 2012 to 2018 at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. The fund supports the “gold” open access model by covering partial costs for authors who publish in journals with article processing charges (APC). Since its establishment the fund has supported publishing 76 articles in fully open access and hybrid journals. Beginning fall 2017 the allocation formula has been increased for publishing in a fully open access journal. The impact of the recent revisions is discussed.

However, the open access movement has opened the door for "predatory publishers" to take advantage of researchers surviving in this publish or perish academic landscape. Predatory journals are becoming increasingly common. Nursing researchers, instructors, and students need to be made aware of the dangers of predatory journals, and they need to know how to identify them. Librarians at Duquesne University did a soft rollout of their institutional repository in 2016, with a full rollout planned for 2017. Elsevier's acquisition of Digital Commons prompted a reevaluation of the marketing plan. The Outreach & Communications Librarian, Digital Scholarship Librarian, and Systems Librarian approached this problem collaboratively to craft (and rebrand) a marketing message.

Despite growing interest in Open Access (OA) to scholarly literature, there is an unmet need for large-scale, up-to-date, and reproducible studies assessing the prevalence and characteristics of OA. We address this need using oaDOI, an open online service that determines OA status for 67 million articles. We use three samples, each of 100,000 articles, to investigateOAin three populations: (1) all journal articles assigned a Crossref DOI, (2) recent journal articles indexed in Web of Science, and (3) articles viewed by users of Unpaywall, an open-source browser extension that lets users find OA articles using oaDOI.
