Somalia. In December 1992, this word conjured up horrific images of extreme deprivation and senseless suffering due to prolonged war and famine. Calls for intervention were heard and answered resulting in an unprecedented deployment of troops for a humanitarian cause. Immediately thereafter, a notable surge of support for the United Nations (UN) and its role in the post-Cold War world was evident.

An ethnographic study of a high school program showed three factors from the outdoor component that enhanced curriculum integration: the inescapable consequences of students decisions in the outdoors, personal growth, and the sense of wonder experienced by students in their encounters with themselves and the natural world.

The influence of Glasser's control theory and reality therapy on educators' perceptions of change, relationships and self reflection has to date not been researched. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the influence that control theory and reality therapy training had on educators in one school district. A case study method was chosen because of its descriptive and evaluative strength in educational settings, its qualitative character and its flexibility. Education in Western countries has been under attack in recent years. Numerous individuals and groups have made attempts to reform or restructure the system in which students are schooled. Such change is difficult and on many occasions the attempts at reform resulted in very superficial modifications. Significant change can come from a complex interaction of people where leaders and collaborators work interactively to achieve common purposes.
