Shame Is The Shared Maintenance Factor In An Eating Diosrder-Anxiety Symptom Comorbidity Model In Female Adolescents, Betty Ngo, Leigh C. Brosof M.S., Cheri Levinson

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid (Hudson et al., 2007). The presence of comorbid anxiety along with eating disorders is likely to increase severity of the disorder, chronicity, and treatment resistance (Blinder et al., 2006). A better understanding of how this comorbidity is maintained will aid with the development of precision interventions and improvements in treatment outcomes. The present study (N= 70 adolescent females; ages 13-15) explores how maintenance factors for eating disorders (concern over mistakes [CM; the excessive worry of making errors], shame, and social appearance anxiety [SAA; the fear of being negatively judged based on …

The Wild That Remains: A Once In A Generation Forest Plan Reignites The Wilderness Debate In Montana’S Gallatin Range, Anthony Stephen Pavkovich

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

The movement to preserve Montana’s Gallatin Mountains, which stretch north from Yellowstone National Park, has been ongoing since the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Largely undeveloped, the range’s sinuous, rocky crest, fertile meadows and thick lodgepole forests are vital to one of the earth’s last intact temperate ecosystems. The landscape provides refuge to rare populations of grizzly bears, elk, bighorn sheep, wolves and wolverines. Yet, the Gallatins remain the last major mountain range bordering the nation’s first and most iconic national park without congressionally designated wilderness. The closest the Gallatins came to being protected as wilderness was in …

Hopelessness And Corruption: Overlooked Drivers Of Migration From The Northern Triangle Of Central America, Joy Olson, Eric L. Olson Jan 2021

Hopelessness And Corruption: Overlooked Drivers Of Migration From The Northern Triangle Of Central America, Joy Olson, Eric L. Olson

Research Publications

This work briefly reviews the complex web of factors traditionally considered migration drivers. The authors’ interviews with migrants and their own work on anti-corruption efforts in Central America led them to hypothesize that something is missing from this traditional framework. Interviews with migrants in transit suggested that beyond any individual or combination of factors stood a profound lack of hope that the situation in their home country would improve.

An Examination Of Sex Distributions In Umm An-Nar Tombs From Bronze Age Arabia Using The Distal Humerus, Charles Downey, Silvio Ernesto Mirabal Torres, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger Jan 2021

An Examination Of Sex Distributions In Umm An-Nar Tombs From Bronze Age Arabia Using The Distal Humerus, Charles Downey, Silvio Ernesto Mirabal Torres, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger

Year 1: AAPA 2021 – virtual

Background: Umm an-Nar (2700-2000 BCE) communal tombs from southeastern Arabia contain human skeletal remains characterized by extensive commingling and variable degrees of burning. Because of this, few bioarchaeological studies have been conducted examining the proportions of males to females in these monumental tombs. We hypothesized that increased social stratification in the late Umm an-Nar period would lead to a higher number of males interred in Umm an-Nar tombs over time.

Methods: To estimate sex, we measured four features of the distal humeri from tombs Unar 1 (2400-2200 BCE) and Unar 2 (2300-2100 BCE). Heat-induced changes to bone from cremation were …

Mni And Sex Estimation In Two Umm An-Nar Tombs From The Uae, Jaime M. Ullinger, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Chaylee Arellano, Quentin Burke, Victoria Calvin, Charlie Downey, Rachel Heil, Alyssa Mcgrath, Silvio Ernesto Mirabal Torres, Jeremy Simmons Jan 2021

Mni And Sex Estimation In Two Umm An-Nar Tombs From The Uae, Jaime M. Ullinger, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Chaylee Arellano, Quentin Burke, Victoria Calvin, Charlie Downey, Rachel Heil, Alyssa Mcgrath, Silvio Ernesto Mirabal Torres, Jeremy Simmons

Year 1: AAPA 2021 – virtual

Commingled tombs are often overlooked in bioarchaeological studies because of the difficult nature of analysis, despite their prevalence across the ancient world. Tombs Unar 1 (U1) and Unar 2 (U2), located in the United Arab Emirates, date to the Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE), when people witnessed shifts in mortuary practices likely reflective of broader changes in subsistence and social organization. A collaborative project that trains undergraduates in anthropological research has examined tomb membership for U1 and U2 by estimating MNI and sex. Despite early descriptions of U1 and U2 holding similar numbers of individuals, this project found that MNI …

A Tali Of Two Tombs: Calculating Mni And Bone Calcination In Commingled Remains From Two Bronze Age Tombs In The Uae, Alyssa Mcgrath, Rachel Heil, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger Jan 2021

A Tali Of Two Tombs: Calculating Mni And Bone Calcination In Commingled Remains From Two Bronze Age Tombs In The Uae, Alyssa Mcgrath, Rachel Heil, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger

Year 1: AAPA 2021 – virtual

Background: The Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE) is known for its dichotomy between the rise in social hierarchy during life, seen in the construction of monumental towers and emergence of oasis agriculture, and equal treatment in death, seen in the commingling of all community members within monumental tombs. Umm an-Nar tombs Unar 1 (2400-2200 BCE) and Unar 2 (2300-2100 BCE) were part of the Shimal Necropolis in the United Arab Emirates. Archaeologists initially hypothesized that these tombs each contained 400+ people, but these estimates were not based on bioarchaeological methods.

Methods: Using the talus, the landmark and zonation methods were …

Counting Chins To Count People: Determining Mni For Umm An-Nar Tombs From Mandibular Fragments, Chaylee Arellano, Quentin Burke, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger Jan 2021

Counting Chins To Count People: Determining Mni For Umm An-Nar Tombs From Mandibular Fragments, Chaylee Arellano, Quentin Burke, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger

Year 1: AAPA 2021 – virtual

Background: The Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE) was a time of rapid transformation within the Oman Peninsula, characterized by changes in mortuary practices, agriculture, and settlement. Located in the United Arab Emirates, Unar 1 (2400-2200 BCE) and Unar 2 (2300-2100 BCE) are two large Umm an-Nar tombs that held commingled, fragmented remains, posing a challenge in determining the minimum number of individuals (MNI). Based on the larger size of Unar 2, we hypothesized that the number of interred individuals would increase over time.

Methods: MNI was calculated using the zonation and landmark methods for the mandible. MNI and tomb size …

Sex Estimation For Early Bronze Age Arabian Tombs Using The Temporal Bone, Victoria Calvin, Jeremy Simmons, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger Jan 2021

Sex Estimation For Early Bronze Age Arabian Tombs Using The Temporal Bone, Victoria Calvin, Jeremy Simmons, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger

Year 1: AAPA 2021 – virtual

Background: The Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE) in the United Arab Emirates was marked by the appearance of settlements, oasis agriculture, and fortification towers, suggesting increasing stratification. Conversely, mortuary practices indicate equality based on commingling of community members. Based on other tombs in the region, it was hypothesized that sex ratios would not differ between tombs Unar 1 (U1; 2400-2200 BCE) and Unar 2 (U2; 2300-2100 BCE).

Methods: Sex was estimated using robusticity of the mastoid process and the lateral angle of the internal auditory meatus for the temporal bone. As cremation was part of the mortuary ritual and could …

Strategies Young Adults Use To Curb Distracted Driving, Claire Shroder, Abby L. Braitman, Keli A. Braitman Jan 2021

Strategies Young Adults Use To Curb Distracted Driving, Claire Shroder, Abby L. Braitman, Keli A. Braitman

Psychology: Interdisciplinary Research in Behavioral Sciences of Transportation Issues

Distracted driving is a well-established risk for young drivers, as they have disproportionately higher vehicle fatalities relative to miles driven. Although many studies have examined the danger of distracted driving, less is known about countermeasures young drivers use to protect themselves from getting distracted. Study 1 included focus groups of young adult drivers to learn different strategies used. From these responses, 25 items were generated. In Study 2, we administered these items to a larger sample of young adult drivers (N = 157). Using exploratory factor analysis (including scree plots, Velicer’s MAP, Cronbach’s alpha, item loadings), we determined a …

Bimodal And Bilingual: Language Characteristics Of Asl And English Users In Deaf Education, Caitlin Bumpass Jan 2021

Bimodal And Bilingual: Language Characteristics Of Asl And English Users In Deaf Education, Caitlin Bumpass

2021 Honors Symposium

Background:
• Understanding how language develops in children who are learning two languages can provide a better understanding of language development in general.
• There is an abundant amount of research regarding language skills of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (d/hh); however, it is unclear if researchers are using a similar definition when describing the characteristics of bimodal/bilingualism.
• Bimodal bilingualism is the use of both an oral language and a sign language, which in the U.S. often includes the ability to perceive and produce both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken and/or written English.

The Diffusion Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication: A Qualitative Application Of Everett Rogers’S Theory Of Diffusion To Aac Refusal And Abandonment Literature, Foster Ellis Jan 2021

The Diffusion Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication: A Qualitative Application Of Everett Rogers’S Theory Of Diffusion To Aac Refusal And Abandonment Literature, Foster Ellis

2021 Honors Symposium

INTRODUCTION
• Empirical evidence demonstrates benefits of AAC communication for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
• However, trends of refusal and abandonment of AAC systems by these populations have been documented
Diffusion of Innovations by Everett Rogers introduces a framework conceptualizing why some innovations encounter uptake while others suffer abandonment or refusal
• The framework includes four factors that are cited as contributing to uptake: the innovation, communication channels, time, and the social system
• This study examines the characteristics important to the innovation factor in order to provide data specific to the innovation of AAC systems
• …

Aac Intervention In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: The Experts’ Perspective, Elizabeth Fulton Jan 2021

Aac Intervention In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: The Experts’ Perspective, Elizabeth Fulton

2021 Honors Symposium

INTRODUCTION
• There is a lack of research on augmentative and alternative communication in low- and middle income (LAMI) countries. Without research, people in LAMI countries with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are left without effective services.
• Currently, there are high levels of disparities in speech intervention for individuals with IDD in LAMI countries.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
• What do you see as the most pressing disparities limiting communication outcomes for individuals with IDD who require AAC in LAMI countries?
• What do you see as the largest barriers precluding LAMI countries from addressing those disparities?
• What do you …

The Effects Of Chemotherapeutic Agents On Cognitive Function: A Literature Review, Corinne Menz Jan 2021

The Effects Of Chemotherapeutic Agents On Cognitive Function: A Literature Review, Corinne Menz

2021 Honors Symposium

Chemotherapy is commonly the first-line treatment for various types of cancers. However, adverse effects resulting from treatment can negatively impact the patient’s quality of life while receiving chemotherapy as well as once the therapy course has been completed. The most commonly experienced effect is chemotherapy related cognitive impairment (CRCI) and is often referred to as “chemobrain”. This review attempts to explore the potential causes of cognitive decline, effects of chemotherapy treatment, and subjective patient reports. Relevant research was compiled in order to understand CRCI and its implications for the care of cancer patients.
