Towards New Strategies For Improving The Transfer Of Innovation Between University And The Food Industry, Gwilym A. Williams

All commerce relies on effective strategies for completing a deal, but conducting the transaction at the university-industry interface with an intangible asset represented by research results remains a difficult proposition. Beyond differences of mission and culture, it is usually assumed that the established language of technology transfer can permit productive communication by a university across a wide diversity of industries. However, the experience of the authors indicates that an appreciation of aspects such as subtleties of language, conflicting goals, and market understanding must also be brought to bear in successfully completing a transaction. Information asymmetry remains a key challenge to …

Edison And Einstein: The Influence Of Problem-Solving Styles On Knowledge Sharing In Life-Science And Ict Teams, Niall Connolly

There is a widely held generalisation that knowledge creation is a consequence of social interaction. However, sociology has taught us that interaction is not as simple as it seems, and that we exhibit preferences for those with whom we interact, thus placing boundaries on the knowledge we create. One robust explanation for increased or reduced interaction is the perception of similarity or dissimilarity. One such similarity/dissimilarity is our individual preferences for problem-solving approaches. In order to describe the influence of individual problem-solving preferences on communication and knowledge sharing, the results of a study in l i f e - science …
Researching From The Inside, Does It Compromise Validity: A Discussion, Pauline Rooney
Researching From The Inside, Does It Compromise Validity: A Discussion, Pauline Rooney
Level 3
it is not surprising that insider research — where the researcher has a direct involvement or connection with the research setting (Robson 2002) — has been the cause of much debate and scrutiny. Questions that frequently arise include: What effect does the researcher's insider status have on the research process? Is the validity of the research compromised? Can a researcher maintain objectivity? Is objectivity necessary for validity?
This paper aims to cast light upon these problematic and complex issues. While it is recognized that insider researchers, and the issues that surround them, are also the subject of debate …
