The complexities of the brain and nervous system make neuroscience an inherently interdisciplinary pursuit, one that comprises disparate basic, clinical, and applied disciplines. Behavioral neuroscientists approach the brain and nervous system as instruments of sensation and response; cognitive neuroscientists view the same systems as a solitary computer with a focus on representations and processes. The Oxford Handbook of Social Neuroscience marks the emergence of a third broad perspective in this field. Social neuroscience emphasizes the functions that emerge through the coaction and interaction of conspecifics, the neural mechanisms that underlie these functions, and the commonality and differences across social species …

Making Pigs Local: Discerning The Sensory Character Of Place, Brad Weiss
Making Pigs Local: Discerning The Sensory Character Of Place, Brad Weiss
Arts & Sciences Articles
This article offers an attempt to characterize the relationship between “taste” and “place” as cultivated and embodied in the production, circulation, and consumption of pasture‐raised pork. I focus on the Piedmont region of North Carolina, and offer ethnographic evidence drawn from working with farmers, chefs and restaurant workers, as well as consumers at farmers’ markets to give substance to these discussions. The argument problematizes the category of “local food,” to interrogate the very notion of “place” and its many “tastes” (and other experiential qualities) with respect to the remaking and remapping of food production in the Piedmont. “Local food” is …

Institute for Historical Biology Articles & Book Chapters
In November of 2010, Dr. Michael Blakey, director of the Institute for Historical Biology, was contacted by archaeologist Andrew Edwards of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation notifying him of the discovery of human remains during an excavation of the James Anderson’s Public Armoury, located near Francis Street in Colonial Williamsburg. After consultation, it was decided that the remains of the two individuals would be transferred to the Institute for Historical Biology for inventory and analysis. The first individual was transferred on January 5th, 2011 from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s collections facility, where it had been cleaned by conservator, Emily Williams, and …

The Elephant In The Room: Deconstructing The Place Of Conservatives In The Student Affairs Profession, Jodi Fisler
The Elephant In The Room: Deconstructing The Place Of Conservatives In The Student Affairs Profession, Jodi Fisler
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The student affairs profession places considerable emphasis on the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and social justice as part of its mission to foster the holistic development of college students. Many vocal conservative critics point to these values as evidence of the liberal worldview that they claim dominates the higher education landscape. This critical, phenomenological study was designed around the premise that higher education, and, specifically, student affairs, is characterized by a liberal ideology that privileges those in the profession who identify as liberal. The study explored the perceptions and experiences of 12 self-identified conservative student affairs professionals in order to …

Student Trust In Teachers And Its Relationship To Student Identification With School, Student Perceptions Of Academic Press, And Achievement, Regina A. Bankole
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Research has documented a plethora of evidence that children's perceptions of their relationships with caregivers, specifically teachers, impacts learning outcomes, including academic engagement and achievement (Furrer & Skinner, 2003; Owens & Johnson, in press; Stipek, 2002; Wentzel, 1997), identification with school (anderman, 2003; Bonich, 2007; Goodenow, 1993; McGannon, 2003; Meloro, 2006; Mitchell, 2004;) and academic press (Bonich, 2007; Lee & Smith, 1999; Middleton & Midgley, 2002). Yet the research base from the student perspective on the pertinent elements that influence meaningful relationships between students and teachers, namely trust, is largely missing.;The purpose of this study was to examine the construct …

The Effects Of Stereotypical Cues On The Social Categorization And Judgment Of Ambiguous-Race Targets, Virginia A. Newton, Cheryl L. Dickter, Ivo Gyurovski
Arts & Sciences Articles
The current study was conducted to test the hypotheses that categorization and subsequent judgments of ambiguous-race targets would be affected by contextual stereotypical cues, and moderated by personality traits of the perceiver. Participants viewed a social networking profile of an ambiguous-race individual with Black, White, or neutral stereotypical information presented in a between-subjects design. In accordance with hypotheses, results indicated that the ambiguous-race targets were categorized congruently with the stereotypical information. Additionally, several of the subsequent judgments about the target’s traits differed as a function of this stereotypic information as well as personality traits of the perceiver, such as prejudice …

Towns In Mind: Urban Plans, Political Culture, And Empire In The Colonial Chesapeake, 1607--1722, Paul Philip Musselwhite
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation charts the contested political and cultural meaning of urbanization in the emerging plantation societies of Virginia and Maryland. Scholars have long asserted that Chesapeake planters' desire for lucre led them to patent huge tracts of land, disperse across the landscape, and completely dismiss urban development. However, through 17 pieces of legislation, colonists, governors, and London administrators actually encouraged towns in the Chesapeake through the seventeenth century. Despite the environmental and agricultural constraints of tidewater tobacco, both colonies wrestled with a perceived need for towns, which consistently appeared to represent the best means to engineer the region's political economy …

To Seek The Good, The True, And Beautiful: White, Greek-Letter Sororities In The U.S. South And The Shaping Of American 'Ladyhood,' 1915--1975, Margaret Lynn Freeman
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation examines the role of white, Greek-letter sororities in the creation and enforcement of standards for white women's behavior during the twentieth century. While sororities at white, southern universities first served as supportive networks for the few female students on newly coeducational university campuses, I argue that they transformed into spaces that promoted "heterosocial" activities and enforced members' heteronormativity through "lessons of 'ladyhood" and required attendance at fraternity parties and participation in heterosexual dating. as a means to guarantee their popularity among students on their respective campuses, sorority chapters sought the attention of the campuses' fraternity elite. This national …
