Is Exposure To Income Inequality A Public Health Concern? Lagged Effects Of Income Inequality On Individual And Population Health, Jennifer M. Mellor, Jeffrey Milyo

Arts & Sciences Articles

Objective. To examine the health consequences of exposure to income inequality.

Data Sources. Secondary analysis employing data from several publicly available sources. Measures of individual health status and other individual characteristics are obtained from the March Current Population Survey (CPS). State-level income inequality is measured by the Gini coefficient based on family income, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau and Al-Samarrie and Miller (1967). State-level mortality rates are from the Vital Statistics of the United States; other state-level characteristics are from U.S. census data as reported in the Statistical Abstract of the United States.

Arts & Sciences Articles

Objective. To illustrate the potential sensitivity of ecological associations between mortality and certain socioeconomic factors to different methods of age-adjustment.

Data Sources. Secondary analysis employing state-level data from several publicly available sources. Crude and age-adjusted mortality rates for 1990 are obtained from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The Gini coefficient for family income and percent of persons below the federal poverty line are from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Putnam's (2000) Social Capital Index was downloaded from http://www.bowlingalone.com; the Social Mistrust Index was calculated from responses to the General Social Survey, following the method described in Kawachi et …

Socioeconomic Effects Of Area Management And The Potential For Community-Based Co-Management: A Case Study Of The Atlantic Sea Scallop Fishery, Winifred L. Ryan Jan 2003

Socioeconomic Effects Of Area Management And The Potential For Community-Based Co-Management: A Case Study Of The Atlantic Sea Scallop Fishery, Winifred L. Ryan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Community concerns regarding natural resource management may be addressed in several forms. The community may participate as part of the public in the management process; community concerns may be included in social impact assessment; and communities may directly participate as managers of resources whether on their own or in conjunction with higher levels of government. In fisheries, typically community concerns are addressed through social impact assessment which is perceived to be lacking in social theory, history, and often effect (Boggs 1994, Little and Krannich 1989). More recent activity and newer regulations show success with co-management, a management regime of shared …

A Semi-Empirical Cellular Automata Model For Wildfire Monitoring From A Geosynchronous Space Platform, Brian D. Killough

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The environmental and human impacts of wildfires have grown considerably in recent years due to an increase in their frequency and coverage. Effective wildfire management and suppression requires real-time data to locate fire fronts, model their propagation and assess the impact of biomass burning. Existing empirical wildfire models are based on fuel properties and meteorological data with inadequate spatial or temporal sampling. A geosynchronous space platform with the proposed set of high resolution infrared detectors provides a unique capability to monitor fires at improved spatial and temporal resolutions. The proposed system is feasible with state-of-the-art hardware and software for high …

Virginia Business Higher Education Council: A Case Study Of Interest Group Formation, Christiane Groth

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

An exploratory case study of the Virginia Business Higher Education Council (VBHEC), a higher education lobbying group of business and education interests, was conducted to gain greater insight to state-level higher education interest group formation. A qualitative method was utilized and interviews with founding members of the VBHEC were carried out to understand why participants felt the need to organize such a group at that particular time as well as why members joined the group and continued their participation. The case study covered the time period from the early 1990s through the Council's incorporation in September of 1996. Findings were …

A Common Thread: Labor, Politics, And Capital Mobility In The Massachusetts Textile Industry, 1880-1934, Beth Anne English

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

"A Common Thread" is an analysis of the relocation of the New England textile industry to the states of the Piedmont South between 1880 and 1934. Competition from textile mills operating in the South became a serious challenge for New England textile manufacturers as early as the 1890s. as they watched their profits turn into losses while output and sales of southern goods continued apace during the 1893 depression, owners of northern textile corporations felt unfairly constrained by state legislation that established age and hours standards for mill employees, and by actual and potential labor militancy in their mills. Several …

An Analysis Of Wetland Patterns And Functions At The Watershed And Sub-Watershed Scales, With *Policy Applications, Jennifer Newton Bissonnette Jan 2003

An Analysis Of Wetland Patterns And Functions At The Watershed And Sub-Watershed Scales, With *Policy Applications, Jennifer Newton Bissonnette

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation addresses the need to define potential impacts of recent and proposed changes in federal wetland regulation in a quantifiable manner. Consideration was made not only of total wetland acreage and wetland types that could sustain losses, but also to categorize the effect such losses would have in terms of wetland functions, at the watershed scale. This work took a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach, and included employing a best-professional judgment model for scoring habitat, water quality and flood attenuation functions to determine potential cumulative impacts; a water quality study which related wetland and watershed variables to nutrient and …
