Hi neighbor,

I lost empathy when I was young and have since spent my time searching for it. Empathy is a capacity that is messy and unnatural; it is a pain in the ass for us selfish folks. My search for it began in high school. Later, in a college literature class, I rediscovered my infatuation for empathy when I read Leslie Jamison’s “The Empathy Exams.”

“This was the double blade of how I felt about any thing that hurt: I wanted someone else to feel it with me, and also I wanted it entirely for myself.”

Considering you and …

“What Doraemon, The Earless Blue Robot Cat From The 22nd Century, Can Teach Us About How Japan’S Elderly And Their Human Caregivers Might Live With Emotional Care Robots.”, Robert C. Marshall Jan 2016

“What Doraemon, The Earless Blue Robot Cat From The 22nd Century, Can Teach Us About How Japan’S Elderly And Their Human Caregivers Might Live With Emotional Care Robots.”, Robert C. Marshall

Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications

Structural analysis of the phenomenally popular and enduring Japanese anime Doraemon helps us think about what we might hope to see in the not too distant future from Japan’s promised surge in development of socially assistive robots (SARs) designed for the care of the elderly. Doraemon, the earless blue robot cat from the 22nd century, is assigned the conjoined tasks of caring for the 10-year-old boy Nobi Nobita as his constant companion, which he does by reproducing the ideal caregiving characteristic of Japanese expectations for mothers, endlessly affectionate indulgence; and of improving Nobita’s character, at which he is unsuccessful because …

Sequential Art & Academic Library Instruction: Crafting A Toolbox Of Multiple Literacies For Credit Courses, Rebecca M. Marrall Jan 2016

Sequential Art & Academic Library Instruction: Crafting A Toolbox Of Multiple Literacies For Credit Courses, Rebecca M. Marrall

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Sequential art is a unique storytelling medium that combines visuals and content in a deliberate, specific delivery in order to engage audiences on emotional and cognitive levels. Consequently, graphic novels, comics, and comix are a rich educational medium for undergraduate credit instruction in academic libraries, precisely because this alternative delivery of content can effectively educate many learning styles. This article documents the development and implementation of an undergraduate, upper-division credit-bearing course in an academic library that examined multiple types of literacy through the medium, with commentary on instructional strategies for other academic librarians and professors.

"Could This Comic Book Really End Islamophobia?": Initial Press Coverage Of Ms. Marvel #1 As Commodity Activism, Jacob Boucher May 2015

"Could This Comic Book Really End Islamophobia?": Initial Press Coverage Of Ms. Marvel #1 As Commodity Activism, Jacob Boucher

Scholars Week

This poster provides an overview at the initial press coverage of the Marvel comic book Ms. Marvel #1 which features an Islamic superheroine located in New Jersey. The comic was released in 2013 and was upheld a progressive move in comics. The author interrogates the rhetoric used by various media sources to establish the comic as a form of commodity activism and how this media coverage achieves this effect through the use of assimilationist and neoliberal rhetoric. The author finds that popular media coverage of the comic establishes the social problem of Islamophobia and lack of diverse representation in comics, …

It's A (Fe)Male World: Male-Oriented Revisionism In Watchmen, Kayla Derbyshire Jan 2014

It's A (Fe)Male World: Male-Oriented Revisionism In Watchmen, Kayla Derbyshire

Occam's Razor

Alan Moore and David Gibbons’ Watchmen has been deemed by many to be one of the first, and most important, revisionist superhero texts. By using the graphic novel to hold a conversation with superhero comics’ own history, Moore and Gibbons have amended common superhero tropes by applying real-world psychologies to the superheroes in an attempt to create a progressive superhero narrative. For the purposes of this argument, unless stated otherwise, the term “comic” refers specifically to those of the superhero genre. A majority of the current work on Watchmen recognizes the differences between the graphic novel and the comics before …

It is in our nature as humans to assume that weakness, in its most literal form, insinuates disadvantage or fault; almost instinctively, our minds seem to formulate the dichotomy between weakness and strength.

We each have our own intellectual, physical and emotional attributes that define our personal singularity. Varying connotations of the word “weak” stand as one such example of our uniqueness and variety, yet despite these different interpretations, we all experience weakness in one way or another.

In this issue of Klipsun, you’ll read that for some, weakness is indulging in our guiltiest pleasures – which may mean secretly …

Appraising Archivists: Documentation And The Need For Accountability In The Appraisal Process, Samantha N. Cross Jan 2011

Appraising Archivists: Documentation And The Need For Accountability In The Appraisal Process, Samantha N. Cross

WWU Graduate School Collection

Appraisal is one of the first steps in archival processing and arguably the most crucial. Embedded in this process are two concepts fundamental to archives: power of the archivist over the collection and trust, by the public, in the archivist to make decisions regarding the historical record. Justification for decisions regarding appraisal, however, are lacking and archivists have yet to make any headway in establishing a means of accountability. Through the implementation of a formalized appraisal report, archivists can thoroughly document the appraisal process while simultaneously justifying their decisions to the greater archival communities and the public at large. This …

Moving Like A Kid Again : An Analysis Of Parkour As Free-Form Adult Play, Margaret E. Kelley Jan 2011

Moving Like A Kid Again : An Analysis Of Parkour As Free-Form Adult Play, Margaret E. Kelley

WWU Graduate School Collection

Parkour is a sport that developed in France in the late 1980s that is described as "the art of movement." The objective of the participant is to choose a route of their own making, from an arbitrary Point A to Point B, and move through that route as efficiently as possible, overcoming any obstacles that are along the way. As of 2011, Parkour has become an international pastime, with practitioners, called "traceurs," participating all over the world. This thesis proposes that Parkour is a form of play, specifically locomotor play. The movements that make up this type of play are …

Emperor Norton I: The Rise Of A San Francisco Cultural Icon 1859-1880, Dieter Martin Jan 2009

Emperor Norton I: The Rise Of A San Francisco Cultural Icon 1859-1880, Dieter Martin

WWU Graduate School Collection

The California Gold Rush had a profound effect on the emerging city of San Francisco. Extreme highs and lows in the economic environment created an atmosphere in which the city's citizens were used to hardship and adversity. These conditions, combined with the importance of the newspaper industry explain the emergence of an eccentric individual such as Emperor Norton. Although he began his career in San Francisco as a prominent businessman, it is his later life as the self declared Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico which is most remembered today. Joshua Norton's career as Emperor mirrored that …

Klipsun Magazine, 2008, Volume 39, Issue 01 - Fall, Megan Claflin

Klipsun Magazine

On Nov. 4, as the Klipsun staff worked diligently to publish this issue, our attentions were diverted. We witnessed history unfold as Americans voted in their first African-American president.

Despite our personal opinions or the boxes we marked on our ballots, the Klipsun newsroom watched as many parts of the country were seized by an uprising of emotion, passion and action. More than ever before, young Americans, our generation, made their voices heard. We rocked the vote!

For America, I believe this election was like coming up for fresh air.

During the past eight years our patriotism has been tested. …

I read somewhere how the greatest gift in life is having the serenity to accept the things you cannot change, the courage to change the things you can, and, most importantly, the wisdom to know the difference.

Granted, it's easier said than done, but in life we do make choices, and each one is part of a bigger picture. Therefore, make each choice with courage and conviction — without looking back.

You never know where your choices will lead you. They could direct you to a career in glass blowing, into the depths of the sea in a submarine, or …

Klipsun Magazine, 2005, Volume 35, Issue 03 - January, Jeanna Barrett

Klipsun Magazine

When we selected this issue’s theme in November, the topics on all our minds were the election and ensuing political issues. We found ourselves so passionately talking about certain topics that we felt we had no other choice than to publish these controversial topics in Klipsun. Some people on the Klipsun staff expressed concerns about publishing a political issue so long after the election. We decided, however, that just because the election was over didn’t mean we had forgotten the issues.

Politics are personal. They affect our everyday lives, from paying taxes to checking out library books, and they affect …

Klipsun Magazine

The cover of Klipsun magazine has a legacy including but not limited to cartoon characters, school administrators, clowns, cars, peculiar folks and tulips. This issue, it seems our subject matter has taken a serious turn. Ann Yow, our photo advisor, best summed it up after she saw the image of illegal activity emblazoned on our computer screen.

Trying to breathe evenly she said, “This isn’t tulips.”

Klipsun is your campus magazine. It isn’t about tulips or heroin. It’s about you.

The editors of this quarter’s Klipsun struggled with the decision to use the arresting cover photo. We feel that hard-to-swallow …

So, how about that cover shot?

As soon as we saw Matt’s picture, we knew it had to go on the cover. That’s the nature of journalism: the most compelling shot often gets the most prominent display.

In running this picture on the cover, Klipsun neither condones nor condemns the use of LSD. “No Longer a Sixties Drug?” is not intended to promote drug use, but rather to tell a story about Western students and their views on the drug.

And how about them nudists?

Nicci, in search of the naked truth, decided to pursue this story. “Great!” we thought. …
