In a non-matched case-control study using data from two large national cohort studies, we investigated whether indicators of child health and development up to 7 years of age differ between children conceived using assisted reproductive technology (ART), children born after sub-fertility (more than 24 months of trying for conception) and other children. Information on ART use/sub-fertility was available for 23,649 children. There were 227 cases (children conceived through ART) and two control groups: 783 children born to sub-fertile couples, and 22,639 children born to couples with no fertility issues. In models adjusted for social and demographic factors there were significant …

Background
To frame interventions, it is useful to understand context- and time-specific correlates of children’s physical activity. To do this, we need accurate assessment of these correlates. There are currently no measures that assess correlates at all levels of the social ecological model, contain items that are specifically worded for the lunchtime and/or after-school time periods, and assess correlates that have been conceptualised and defined by children. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the lunchtime and after-school Youth Physical Activity Survey for Specific Settings (Y-PASS) questionnaires.
Methods
The Y-PASS questionnaire was administered …

Development Of High Melting Temperature Microencapsulated Phase Change Material For Compacted Thermal Energy Storage Bed, Weiguang Su, Jo Darkwa, Georgios Kokogiannakis
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
In this paper a novel high temperature microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) based on paraffin as the core material and MF resin as the shell material has been developed with the in-situ polymerization method for solar hot water storage application. The results showed that the type of emulsifier could influence core material content, the encapsulation efficiency as well as the latent heat capacity. Based on the results and analysis the study has shown that energy storage density could be increased by as much as 59% if 60wt% of MEPCM 1 was to be used in the proposed compacted MEPCM-water bed …

Will 3D printers become as commonplace as mobile phones in the megacities or the backwaters of the Global South? Thomas Birtchnell and William Hoyle assess the development potential of this new technique for producing three-dimensional objects, which resembles the way a paper printer produces pages of text. Will 3D printing for development become a key strategy for community action against enduring material poverty? Birtchnell and Hoyle consider this question through a centrepiece case study on the UK charity techfortrade's 3D4D Challenge.

There is a multiplicity of factors and actors that come into play to make teacher professional development (TPD) a strategic and powerful scheme for improving teacher practices. This multiplicity is evident in educational practices and theories. Consequently, traditional perspectives that take a simple view of TPD as a single, independent entity in teacher learning in isolation from other factors and actors are problematic. To better understand how TPD can bring about change in teacher practices-transforming teacher learning, there is a need to transcend the linear, causal, deterministic assumption about TPD. Here, in this discussion paper, I argue that powerful TPD …

Objective Initiatives promoting the reduction of high-salt food consumption by consumers need to be partly based on current levels of salt knowledge in the population. However, to date there is no validated salt knowledge questionnaire that could be used to assess population knowledge about dietary salt (i.e. salt knowledge). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to develop and validate a salt knowledge questionnaire.
Design A cross-sectional study was conducted on an online web survey platform using convenience, snowball sampling. The survey questionnaire was evaluated for content and face validity before being administered to the respondents.
Setting Online survey. …

Development Of Databases For Facilitating Green Roof Energy Simulation Assessments, Aloysius Decruz, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Jo Darkwa, Kate Yuan, Paul Strachan
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Assessments of the energy performance of green roofs have traditionally been performed with experimental and modelling procedures. Experimental green roof energy studies have significant disadvantages (expensive, time-consuming, cannot be generalised, etc.). On the other hand, modelling studies are often done with over-simplified models (for example, by ignoring the effect of moisture flows in the green roof layers) or with detailed models that require inputs which are often difficult to be obtained in practice and may involve a certain degree of uncertainty. This paper describes the methodologies for the development of databases that include data inputs that could be used within …

Development And Validation Of A Disaster Management Metamodel (Dmm), Siti Hajar Othman, Ghassan Beydoun, Vijayan Sugumaran
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Disaster Management (DM) is a diffused area of knowledge. It has many complex features interconnecting the physical and the social views of the world. Many international and national bodies create knowledge models to allow knowledge sharing and effective DM activities. But these are often narrow in focus and deal with specified disaster types. We analyze thirty such models to uncover that many DM activities are actually common even when the events vary. We then create a unified view of DM in the form of a metamodel. We apply a metamodelling process to ensure that this metamodel is complete and consistent. …
Shuttle Car Network For Roadway Development, Dalin Cai, Ernest Baafi, Ian Porter
Shuttle Car Network For Roadway Development, Dalin Cai, Ernest Baafi, Ian Porter
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwill method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gatheroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event mode of roadway development can help asses how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of …

Design And Development Of A Novel Displacement Differential Self-Induced Magnetorheological Damper, Guoliang Hu, Yi Ru, Weihua Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This article presents the development of a novel magnetorheological damper which has a self-sensing ability. In this study, a linear variable differential sensor, which was based on the electromagnetic induction mechanism, was integrated with a conventional magnetorheological damper. The working principle, configuration, and prototype of the displacement differential self-induced magnetorheological damper based on the integrated linear variable differential sensor technology were presented. A mathematical model of the proposed displacement differential self-induced magnetorheological damper was established. The finite element model was built with two-dimensional Maxwell software and the magnetic simulations were presented. With this approach, the influence of the flux leakage, …
Clarifying Inhibitory Control: Diversity And Development Of Attentional Inhibition, Steven J. Howard, Janice Johnson, Juan Pascual-Leone
Clarifying Inhibitory Control: Diversity And Development Of Attentional Inhibition, Steven J. Howard, Janice Johnson, Juan Pascual-Leone
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Attentional inhibition is the ability to suppress task-irrelevant cognitive processing and ignore salient yet irrelevant features of the situation. However, it remains unclear whether inhibition is a singular function. Prominent are four proposals: a one-factor model of inhibition, an attentional model of inhibition, a response- versus cognitive-inhibition taxonomy, and an effortful- versus automatic-inhibition taxonomy. To evaluate these models, we administered nine inhibition and three attention tasks to 113 adults (Study 1) and 109 children (Study 2). Inhibition models were evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis after statistically controlling for attentional activation. Subsequent age analyses investigated whether inhibition tasks and factors related …

Aligning Ontology-Based Development With Service Oriented Systems, Jun Shen, Ghassan Beydoun, Graham Low, Lijuan Wang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This paper argues for placing ontologies at the centre of the software development life cycle for distributed component-based systems and, in particular, for service-oriented systems. It presents an ontology-based development process which relies on three levels of abstraction using ontologies: architecture layer, application layer and domain layer. The paper discusses the key roles of ontologies with respect to the various abstraction layers and their corresponding impact on the concomitant workproducts. In addition, a peer-to-peer-based service selecting and composing tool is suggested as a way of supporting the process. The paper presents the architecture of the proposed tool and illustrates the …
