In order to understand the magnitude, direction, and geographic distribution of land-use changes, we evaluated land-use trends in U.S. counties during the latter half of the 20th century. Our paper synthesizes the dominant spatial and temporal trends in population, agriculture, and urbanized land uses, using a variety of data sources and an ecoregion classification as a frame of reference. A combination of increasing attractiveness of nonmetropolitan areas in the period 1970–2000, decreasing household size, and decreasing density of settlement has resulted in important trends in the patterns of developed land. The Arctic system is moving toward a new state that falls outside the envelope of glacial-interglacial fluctuations that prevailed during recent Earth history. This future Arctic is likely to have dramatically less permanent ice than exists at present. At the present rate of change, a summer ice-free Arctic Ocean within a century is a real possibility, a state not witnessed for at least a million years. The change appears to be driven largely by feedback-enhanced global climate warming, and there seem to be few, if any processes or feedbacks within the Arctic system that are capable of altering the trajectory …

Home Visiting New Hampshire (HVNH) is a statewide initiative of the Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) Bureau of Maternal and Child Health. The program began in 2001 with awards to support programs in 13 sites and expanded in 2002 for a total of 19 sites across New Hampshire. The grantees provide home-based services to Medicaid-eligible pregnant women and their families, particularly those at-risk for poor pregnancy outcomes, child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, and depression. The goals of Home Visiting New Hampshire are to 1. promote healthy pregnancy and birth outcomes. 2. promote a safe and nurturing environment for …
