A Building Block Of Empathy: Establishing A Graphic Medicine Collection In An Academic Health Sciences Library., Jess King, Alison Bobal

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

To help address the well-being of the campus and contribute to empathy building amongst students pursuing careers as healthcare providers, an academic health sciences library built a graphic novel collection focused on comics that discuss medical conditions and health-related topics. The collection contains the experiences of patients, providers, and caregivers. The reader-friendly format of graphic novels provides an easy entry point for discussing empathy with health professions faculty and students. The collection has been used in the classroom during library instruction sessions, with the idea of integrating it within the curriculum.

Systematic Review Of Ct Angiography In Guiding Management In Pediatric Oropharyngeal Trauma., Steven D Curry, Dallin N Christensen, Pooja M Varman, Kimberly A Harp, Dwight T Jones

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric oropharyngeal trauma is common. Although most cases resolve uneventfully, there have been reports of internal carotid artery injury leading to devastating neurovascular sequelae. There is significant controversy regarding the utility of CT angiography (CTA) in children with seemingly minor oropharyngeal trauma. The goal of this study was to appraise changes in diagnosis and treatment based on CTA results.

METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, the Cochrane Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Group Trials Register, and the ClinicalTrials.gov database was performed following PRISMA guidelines.

RESULTS: The search yielded 5,078 unique abstracts, of which 8 articles were …

Older Adults' Pain Outcomes After Mhealth Interventions: Scoping Review, Marcia Shade, Mariya Kovaleva, Kimberly Harp, Aqueasha Martin-Hammond Jan 2023

Older Adults' Pain Outcomes After Mhealth Interventions: Scoping Review, Marcia Shade, Mariya Kovaleva, Kimberly Harp, Aqueasha Martin-Hammond

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

BACKGROUND: Pain is prevalent and poorly managed in older adults. Although pain self-management strategies are helpful, adoption and access are limited; thus, technology provides an opportunity for intervention delivery. Mobile health (mHealth) is feasible to use in older adults; however, we have yet to understand the effect of mHealth pain self-management interventions on pain outcomes in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the characteristics of mHealth interventions and their efficacy on pain outcomes in older adults with musculoskeletal pain.

METHODS: With the assistance of a medical librarian, keywords and subject headings were generated, including …

When millions saw the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota by the police during the COVID-19 pandemic where Black, along with Indigenous and Latinx, people had higher death rates, this led to a major awakening from white Americans that Black lives and Black bodies are treated differently. In response, many libraries issued statements supporting Black people in general and supporting their Black library workers. These statements were commitments to make change and to impact the inequities in libraries. As time passed after these statements, reading lists, LibGuides, and reading groups were created, Black bodies are still being harmed; so, …

Information To Help Families Meet Their Breastfeeding Goals, Christian I.J. Minter Apr 2019

Information To Help Families Meet Their Breastfeeding Goals, Christian I.J. Minter

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Breast milk is the recommended food source for infants during their first year of life. Although the rates for parents that initiate breastfeeding their baby are increasing, rates for those who continue breastfeeding past six months are much lower. Parents face a great deal of misinformation and misconceptions about the benefits of breastfeeding, how breastfeeding works, how to address challenges, and who to turn to for help. It is important for families to have all the facts, especially facts backed by science, to make the decision on whether to breastfeed, and, for those who do breastfeed, to successfully meet their …

Springshare's LibGuide platform has become synonymous with online library pathfinders or research guides and instruction support. However, without oversight of the collection of guides and standards for their creation, unwieldy numbers and lack of uniformity prevail. The McGoogan Library of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center created a review process that not only governed the creation and approval of guides, but analyzed the usage and scope of guides that had already been created. This paper will outline the creation of standards and application of a review process to increase the value and relevance of guides.

Gaps In Affiliation Indexing In Scopus And Pubmed., Cynthia M. Schmidt, Roxanne Cox, Alissa Fial, Teresa Hartman, Martha L. Magee

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether unexpected gaps existed in Scopus's author affiliation indexing of publications written by the University of Nebraska Medical Center or Nebraska Medicine (UNMC/NM) authors during 2014.

METHODS: First, we compared Scopus affiliation identifier search results to PubMed affiliation keyword search results. Then, we searched Scopus using affiliation keywords (UNMC, etc.) and compared the results to PubMed affiliation keyword and Scopus affiliation identifier searches.

RESULTS: We found that Scopus's records for approximately 7% of UNMC/NM authors' publications lacked appropriate UNMC/NM author affiliation identifiers, and many journals' publishers were supplying incomplete author affiliation information to PubMed. …

Creating Interactive Online Instruction: The Mcgoogan Library Experience., Teresa L. Hartman, Alissa Fial

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Online instruction is a hot topic at academic medical centers. Seizing the opportunity to join the online movement at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), the McGoogan Library created an open access course made up of six learning modules. The modules addressed three issues: 1) supplementing one-shot library instruction, 2) offering opportunity for instruction when a librarian is not embedded in a course, and 3) showcasing the library as an online instruction supporter. This article discusses the planning process, technology used, how the modules were received, and how this initial project increased McGoogan Library's involvement in the UNMC online …

Circulation Of Core Collection Monographs In An Academic Medical Library., Cynthia M. Schmidt, N. L. Eckerman

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Academic medical librarians responsible for monograph acquisition face a challenging task. From the plethora of medical monographs published each year, academic medical librarians must select those most useful to their patrons. Unfortunately, none of the selection tools available to medical librarians are specifically intended to assist academic librarians with medical monograph selection. The few short core collection lists that are available are intended for use in the small hospital or internal medicine department library. As these are the only selection tools available, however, many academic medical librarians spend considerable time reviewing these collection lists and place heavy emphasis on the …
