'Play The Book Again': Towards A Systems Approach To Game Adaptation, Johnathan Sanders
'Play The Book Again': Towards A Systems Approach To Game Adaptation, Johnathan Sanders
Dissertations - ALL
Situated at the interstices of game studies, adaptation scholarship, and literary theory, this dissertation puts forth a theoretical framework for effectively analyzing literary game adaptations (that is, playable digital or analog systems that are based upon a work or works of literature) as expressive intertextual systems which facilitate aesthetic experiences. By integrating contemporary game studies with filmic adaptation studies and literary theory, I argue that game adaptations allow us to see how games, adaptations, and indeed all texts can be productively conceived of as Barthesian networks of meaning: collections of interacting formal, narrative, intertextual, and contextual elements from which a …

Then, this thesis analyzes two examples of children's books depicting how picture books help children to manage their negative feelings and having a therapeutic effect on the child.
This thesis claims that bibliotherapy through children's independent reading of books can effectively alleviate left-behind children's negative emotions.
"Black And African Cultural Influences On American Pop Culture", Bennie Braswell Iii
"Black And African Cultural Influences On American Pop Culture", Bennie Braswell Iii
Theses - ALL
The aim of this thesis is to show the impact that Black and African culture has on the entertainment industry specifically in the USA. The first portion of the discussion retraces Black and African cultural influences in the 1920's, beginning with Black-owned newspapers, then on to comic books, until arriving in the 21st century with an exploration of such influences in the film and musical industries. An introduction of relevant African mythology figures will follow this historical look at cultural influences on entertainment. We will discuss the adaptations of these mythological figures in modern-day heroic beings. Providing detailed information about …
The Art Of Subtitling: A Case Study Of A Chinese Online Fansub Group, Xianwei Wu
The Art Of Subtitling: A Case Study Of A Chinese Online Fansub Group, Xianwei Wu
Theses - ALL
Online fan subtitling (hereafter fansub) groups are a recent phenomenon that have quickly gained global popularity. They are groups of volunteers who produce and distribute subtitles of English televisions shows and films for free. However, to date not much academic attention has been paid to this phenomenon in a critical capacity, with the exception of anime fansubbing. This study closely examines one fansub group in China using a single-case design case study. The methods of data collection include: in-depth interviews with the translators; participant observation as a subtitle translator; and textual/discourse analysis of the subtitles. This study will use the …

Netflix And The Development Of The Internet Television Network, Laura Osur
Netflix And The Development Of The Internet Television Network, Laura Osur
Dissertations - ALL
When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be.
This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and …

Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti
Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Despite increasing interest in and acknowledgment of the significance of video games, current descriptive practices are not sufficiently robust to support searching, browsing, and other access behaviors from diverse user groups. To address this issue, the Game Metadata Research Group at the University of Washington Information School, in collaboration with the Seattle Interactive Media Museum, worked to create a standardized metadata schema. This metadata schema was empirically evaluated using multiple approaches—collaborative review, schema testing, semi-structured user interview, and a large-scale survey. Reviewing and testing the schema revealed issues and challenges in sourcing the metadata for particular elements, determining the level …

Public Relations And Promotion In Film: How It’S Done And Why It’S Important, Timothy Cheng
Public Relations And Promotion In Film: How It’S Done And Why It’S Important, Timothy Cheng
Honors Capstone Projects - All
Films have been huge revenue drivers in the entertainment industry. However, not all films succeed with high profit margins. Success can be contributed to aspects such as the writing, the production quality, or the acting within a film. These aspects contribute to how audiences, critics and media receive a movie. Unfortunately, these aspects typically overshadow one of the most important functions contributing to a film’s success: promotion and public relations.
For my capstone, I researched how films are promoted, branded, and distributed through public relations functions. Research largely relied on secondary research, with primary research added for deeper concepts. After …

Terra Nova, An Experiment In Creating Cult Televison For A Mass Audience, Laura Osur
Terra Nova, An Experiment In Creating Cult Televison For A Mass Audience, Laura Osur
Media Studies - Theses
When it aired in Fall 2011 on Fox, Terra Nova was an experiment in creating a cult television program that appealed to a mass audience. This thesis is a case study of that experiment. I conclude that the show failed because of its attempts to maintain the sophistication, complexity and innovative nature of the cult genre while simultaneously employing an overly simplistic narrative structure that resembles that of mass audience programming. Terra Nova was unique in its transmedia approach to marketing and storytelling, its advanced special effects, and its dystopian speculative fiction premise. Terra Nova's narrative, on the other hand, …

From Page To Screen: Television And The Decline Of Fiction In Magazines, Mirel Ketchiff
From Page To Screen: Television And The Decline Of Fiction In Magazines, Mirel Ketchiff
Honors Capstone Projects - All
My Capstone project explores how the rise of television contributed to the decline of fiction in magazines and the decline of general interest magazines in America. I argue that television appealed more to advertisers as a mass-market medium than general interest magazines. Magazines had to find a new way to appeal to advertisers, and they did so by becoming niche publications that could offer advertisers a specific type of audience, rather than just a huge amount of readers. Fiction had been used in magazines as a form of mass-market entertainment; with magazines become geared towards specialized interests, fiction fell by …

Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren
Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren
Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
This paper creates a taxonomic model for visual information displays looking at three levels: information design (based on Edward Tufte’s work), information architecture, and information spaces. Special attention is paid to the use of spatial and navigational metaphors in visual systems as they affect the user’s experience. Especially interesting is how a user creates an “information space” – a mental model of what he has seen, how she keeps track of where she is within a system, and how these activities fit together with the data that is being sought. Mathematics is one area that holds promise for better understanding …
The Role Of Rare Books In A University Library, Charles W. Mann
The Role Of Rare Books In A University Library, Charles W. Mann
The Courier
Charles W. Mann describes the proper role of rare books with regards to an academic library. Instead of the rare books being the heart of the library, Mann argues that rare books collections give each academic library a distinct personality based on its makeup.
