Federal Farm Program Payments (1990-2001): An Analysis Of Changing Dependency And The Distribution Of Farm Payments In South Dakota, Larry Janssen, Yonas Hamda
Economics Staff Paper Series
The growing dependence of the state and local economy and the farm sector on Federal farm program payments is highlighted in this South Dakota case study. The concentration and distribution of farm program payments to recipients at the county, regional and state level from 1996 - 2001 is examined. Reasons for and implications of growing inequality of farm program payments are discussed.
Fire-Induced Albedo Change And Its Radative Forcing At The Surface In Northern Austrailia, Y. Jin, David P. Roy
Fire-Induced Albedo Change And Its Radative Forcing At The Surface In Northern Austrailia, Y. Jin, David P. Roy
GSCE Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the impact of fire on surface albedo and the associated radiative forcing over 56% of continental Australia encompassing the fire-prone northern tropical savanna. Fire-affected areas and albedos are derived for the 2003 fire season using daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface reflectance data. Near-infrared and total shortwave albedos are observed to generally decrease after fire occurrence. Regionally, the total shortwave albedo drops by an average of 0.024, with increasing reductions as the dry season progresses and larger reductions in grasslands than woody savannas. These fire-induced albedo changes exert a positive forcing at the surface that increases …

Price Transparency In The Voluntary Price Reporting System For Live Cattle: Theory And Empirical Evidence From South Dakota, Scott Fausti, Matthew Diersen
Price Transparency In The Voluntary Price Reporting System For Live Cattle: Theory And Empirical Evidence From South Dakota, Scott Fausti, Matthew Diersen
Economics Staff Paper Series
The ability of the former federal voluntary price reporting system to facilitate market efficiency in the cash markets for U.S. livestock was questioned by producer groups and academic researchers prior to implementation of federal mandatory price reporting regulations. In the cash market for slaughter cattle, concerns raised in the literature centered on the effect of thinning cash markets and strategic price reporting behavior on the robustness of voluntary cash price reports issued by the USDA-Agricultural Marketing Services. A theoretical framework is developed describing the interregional spatial linkages between cash markets and price reporting regimes (mandatory versus voluntary). Data from South …

The Effects Of Perceived Authority On Suggestibility In Interrogation-Like Situations: A Pilot Study, Renae Kotas, Derek Dehne
The Effects Of Perceived Authority On Suggestibility In Interrogation-Like Situations: A Pilot Study, Renae Kotas, Derek Dehne
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
The effect of perceived authority on suggestibility was assessed. Two groups of participants were used, one receiving perceived authority and one receiving none. A military student dressed in fatigues administered the procedure to the first group and a civilian student in street clothes administered to the second. The Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale was used to assess the suggestibility of each group. No significant difference between the groups was found.

South Dakota State University Students And Debt Management, Katherine Delaney, Tamara Sinning, Ashley Berndt
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Money! It comes in slowly and disappears faster than students ever thought possible. People are falling into more debt than ever before, especially college students. Where does all the hard-earned money go? How can students develop habits that help them keep track of their spending and not fall deep into debt? The purpose of our research is to investigate how money can be used wisely and how to make good financial spending decisions. College students' debt behavior is important because today's students are the workforce of tomorrow. A plan is needed to help students learn how to handle today's financial …

Color's Influence On Short-Term Memory In Each Gender, Ryan W. Schroeder
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
This study evaluated links between gender and short-term memory using coloration of three groups of 12 stimuli: numbers, non-emotion based words, and nonsense syllables. The participants were undergraduate students enrolled at South Dakota State University. The participants viewed these colored stimuli and recalled as many as possible.Using a between subjects design, each group of participants was assigned a specific color. When interpreted with an ANOVA and post-hoc t-tests, neither gender nor color significantly altered recall of stimuli.
As Two Become One : The Lived Experience Of A Twinless Twin, Jody Ness
As Two Become One : The Lived Experience Of A Twinless Twin, Jody Ness
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Twins enter life as a pair and are often viewed so in later life. After the death of a co-twin, twins feel like they have lost part of themselves, leaving them alone, often without professional help. No nursing research has provided insight into the experience of a twin who has lost their co-twin. The purpose of this research was to explore and describe the lived experience of a twin who has lost their co-twin. The aim was to generate an understanding of the unique bond and sense of loss experienced by twinless twins. Phenomenology and Attachment Theory were utilized to …
