Initial Overview Of The Linguistic Diversity Of Refugee Communities In Cairo, Daniele Calvani Sep 2003

Initial Overview Of The Linguistic Diversity Of Refugee Communities In Cairo, Daniele Calvani

Faculty Journal Articles

Cairo has become home to a high number of refugees, who – no matter how long they stay in the Egyptian capital – are very likely to remain as part of distinct immigrant communities. Their members’ country of origin, cultural and language background form the basis of cohesion. Their presence contributes to making Cairo linguistically dynamic. Since the significance of this has so far been greatly underestimated, there is need for research on language diversity in Cairo. This report partially fulfils this need, in that it begins to highlight the diversity of languages spoken by refugees in Cairo and alerts …

Field Report: Preliminary Investigation Of Educational Opportunities For Refugee Children In Egypt, Wesal Afifi

Faculty Journal Articles

The intent of this report is to provide information about and raise awareness of current educational opportunities for refugee children in Cairo. This study focuses on the administrative procedure of obtaining access to and enrolment into both public and private schools in Cairo, examining what obstacles there are to this process and exploring possible means of overcoming these obstacles. This study …

Industrialization And Underdevelopment: Towards A Heavy Industrialization Drive In Egypt, Mohamed Ismail Sabry

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis tries to answer twomain questions. The first is why a developing country like Egypt needs Heavy Industrialization? And the second is what are the best strategies to achieve such an industrialization drive? These two questions are being tackled through a theoritical analysis using the Structuralist, Neoclassical and Institutional perspectives. A special focus is put on specific heavy industrial sectors of potential or strategic value in Egypt namely: Steel, Aluminum, Petrochemicals and Machinery. Archived Theses and Dissertations

The second Palestinian intifada and the way it was covered by the various media outlets caused a revolution in media coverage in the Arab World. Al-Jazeera TV channel emerged and gathered audiences, and regularly tuned in to catch the latest news and updates, reminding people of CNN during the Gulf War. However, no studies were conducted, that measured the impact of this channel on audiences and how it did or did not create a common public opinion among them.

This study's purpose is to testing the relationship between Media,

War, and Public Opinion. In other words, it studies the impact …

Barbarous Magnificence: The Decline And Continuity Of Akan Traditional Religious Practices, Kwasi Bempong Jun 2003

Barbarous Magnificence: The Decline And Continuity Of Akan Traditional Religious Practices, Kwasi Bempong

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses archaeological, anthropological, and historical evidence along with indigenous texts as the determining factors to address two major problems in the literature: the widely held belief that Akan culture developed in the forests of modem Ghana and that their supreme deity, Onyame, is a 'withdrawn deity', with whom they did not share an intimate relationship. Although these problems may seem unrelated the former is used to support the latter by ignoring the historical antecedents of Northern Akan culture that blossomed in the savanna-forest transition zone and the subsequent movement of well-developed religious practices and beliefs from the north …

Women And Inheritance Laws: The Case Of Egypt, Hedayat Labib Feb 2003

Women And Inheritance Laws: The Case Of Egypt, Hedayat Labib

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This work is a study of the discrepancy between the law and practice of inheritance. Since inheritance problems are confronted by both sexes, examples will involve men and women but with the main focus on the latter. Economic dependence on men results in powerlessness and passivity on the part of women. Men utilize cultural capital in their attempt to justify their unjust disinheritance of their female kin. This is used to mystify and justify to themselves their material possession of the shares of women. Whether they accept this situation or not, women are socialized into perceiving men in a certain …

The "Marginalized Violent Internal Conflict" (Mvic) Model And The Ogoni Conflict In The Niger Delta Of Nigeria, John Osayere Agbonifo

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The Ogoni people, and later other ethnic minority groups m the Niger Delta, embarked on violent resistance against environmental pollution and degradation occasioned by the unclean energy operations of oil transnational corporations, notably Shell, in the 1990s. Several explanations have been adduced for the outbreak of hostilities and the motives of the insurrectional I eaders. Little, however, has been done in terms of efforts geared at understanding the nature of the conflict through the application of conflict models and typologies and the comparative study of the Niger Delta conflicts with the contentious politics of other aggrieved and marginalized peoples e …
