Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko

Faculty Articles

Designing a hybrid course entails the challenge of choosing learning activities for each of the face-to-face and online environments--and sequencing and coordinating the activities across the two environments--to promote student attainment of the course’s learning objectives. This paper presents a study comparing student performance in an undergraduate Principles of Microeconomics course taught by the same instructor under hybrid (n = 51) and face-to-face (n = 24) delivery. The percentage of hybrid students completing the course (71%) was not significantly different (chi-square = .61, p = .433) than that (79%) of the face-to-face students. A regression analysis controlling for student GPA …

The Value Of Library Publishing & Undergraduate Education, Stephanie Davis-Kahl

Scholarly Publications

Please join us for a special session at ACRL 2013 in Indianapolis to learn about three different library-led publishing programs – digital monographs at Utah State University, undergraduate journals and conferences at Illinois Wesleyan University, and technical reports at Purdue University – and the impact they have had on each university’s broader mission. By lowering barriers and creating opportunities to publish across the entire continuum of scholarly content, these libraries have found new ways to support faculty research, the student experience, and the public university’s role in the state. At Utah State, the library has enhanced its University Press by …

Review Of The Book Those Girls: Single Women In Sixties And Seventies Popular Culture, By Katerine J. Lehman, Candi Carter Olsen

Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications

Katherine J. Lehman's Those Girls: Single Women in Sixties and Seventies Popular Culture explores the ways that unmarried women were portrayed in TV shows and movies of the era and relates those portrayals to the period's quickly changing attitudes toward female sexuality and independence. Lehman's thought-provoking original research shows how Hollywood and 1960s and 1970s public opinion worked symbiotically to expand female roles while also binding women to traditional images.

Prominent Peripheries: The Role Of Borderlands In Central Africa’S Regionalized Conflict., Lindsay Scorgie

Faculty Publications

The Great Lakes region of Central Africa has been beset by conflict for close to two decades now. Aside from the unprecedented humanitarian consequences, the most striking feature of the violence has been its profoundly regional character. This paper seeks to explore how one might better understand the spread and cross-border nature of conflict in this region. It argues that the dominant contemporary model for explanation of regional conflict, with its overwhelmingly state-centric orientation, is inadequate in providing a comprehensive understanding of the structure of this type of violence. Rather, the so-called peripheries of states – borderlands – need to …

Background Tailored, web-assisted interventions can reach many smokers. Content from other smokers (peers) through crowdsourcing could enhance relevance.

Purpose To evaluate whether peers can generate tailored messages encouraging other smokers to use a web-assisted tobacco intervention (Decide2Quit.org).

Methods Phase 1: In 2009, smokers wrote messages in response to scenarios for peer advice. These smoker-to-smoker (S2S) messages were coded to identify themes. Phase 2: resulting S2S messages, and comparison expert messages, were then e-mailed to newly registered smokers. In 2012, subsequent Decide2Quit.org visits following S2S or expert-written e-mails were compared.

Results Phase 1: a total of 39 smokers produced 2886 messages …
