As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. STEM afterschool programs offer a range of academic, social, and emotional outcomes to support positive youth development. In particular, STEM afterschool programs have been shown to increase student self-efficacy and interest in pursuing STEM careers (Chan et al., 2020; Dabney et al., 2012). Youth must first choose to attend the STEM afterschool programs to gain the many benefits offered. However, participation in such programs decreases as youth get older and encounter additional competing interests (i.e., home responsibilities, jobs, etc.). To get youth to attend, STEM afterschool programs must meet the needs of youth by leveraging resources, activities, and relationships.

To ensure graduates have the skill to work within the tourism industry, and spurred on by the paradigm shift in teaching due to Covid 19, this research focused on developing innovative solutions using technology. Using virtual assessment techniques, industry co-created evaluation, and integrated assessment, it explored how virtual field-trips can be developed as part of remote teaching methods. To provide context to the topic of sustainable tourism and technology, a student-led virtual seminar with industry was undertaken linking with TU Dublin Green Week 2021. Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy, which invite expert witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Particulate reinforced metal matrix composites (PRMMCs) are of interest owing to the low cost of their raw materials and their ease of fabrication, making them suitable for applications requiring relatively high-volume production. The improved properties of PRMMCs result from the addition of hard ceramic particles (such as Al2O3 or SiC); the size, shape, volume fraction, interfacial properties and distribution of these (together with the fabrication method) determine the mechanical behaviour of the composite. However, PRMMCs have inferior ductility, toughness and low-cycle fatigue properties compared with unreinforced alloys, often limiting their usefulness in practice. A350 grade black mild steel is one of the most widely used structural materials in the world, being commonly found in buildings, bridges and offshore structures.Welding is commonly used to join two plates of structural steel and this often takes the form of a T-butt.In addition, other more complex geometrical joints are often simplified for stress analysis purposes by approximating them as 2-D T-butt plate models (e.g. skewed T-joints, cruciform welded joints, tubular welded joints, pipe–plate joints, etc.).However, all such welds are potentially susceptible to fatigue crack initiation and slow but accelerating growth arising as a result of fluctuating service …

A section of New South Wales’ railways rail turnout was removed, since testing revealed that it had become defective and no longer fit-for-purpose (see photos). The University of Wollongong was commissioned to investigate the failure mode of the track section, and to provide a detailed report on the material composition, heat treatment, surface finish, wear and any material defects. Since the turnout is over 25 years old, there are no test certificates or other quality assurance documents available for review.

Current standard testing methods for determining plane strain fracture toughness (KIc), such as ASTM E399 and ASTM E1820, require a prior estimate of KIc, plus the specimens are large, involve a lot of machining and need fatigue pre-cracking. There is therefore a desire to develop new testing techniques which are simple, as well as cost and time effective. While the use of tensile notched round bars (NRB) test pieces is not novel, dating back to a conference paper by Brown in 1975, relatively few authors have so far attempted this.

In 1983, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), responding to the AIDS epidemic, adopted a policy of deferring men who have had sex with men (MSM) at anytime since 1977 from donating blood. The current policy, adopted in 1992, continues to defer this group indefinitely. This paper investigates the societal implications of the deferred status. The Fox Islands have, through the Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, successfully established a wind operation to provide the 1,500 island residents with electricity produced by three 1.5 megawatt turbines situated on Vinalhaven Island. On February 7, 2014, the day of Fisht Stadiums Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony, NBC ran an eight-hour tape-delay, releasing their idea of a more complete version of the 11:00 a.m. ET ceremony at 7:30 p.m. ET. The tape-delay allowed NBC to make edits to their film, which would include the exclusion of entire segments of the games. This paper presents a longitudinal ethnographic study of a large, multidisciplinary scientific project studying subseafloor microbial life.

To study this life, scientists need rock and water samples taken from the seafloor. To collect these samples, scientists participate in ocean drilling cruises, such as those carried out as part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). The IODP and its forerunners have been operating since the 1960s. Initially, these cruises only involved physical scientists (such as geochemists).
