Digitized Archival Primary Sources In Stem: A Selected Webliography, Amy Jankowski Jul 2017

Digitized Archival Primary Sources In Stem: A Selected Webliography, Amy Jankowski

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Popular connotations of archives and special collections are most closely aligned with the arts and humanities fields, with history being the most seamless affiliation. However, archival documentation extends far beyond common disciplinary assumptions, with strong holdings relevant to the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as medicine and other allied disciplines. These archival collections provide largely untapped educational, enrichment, and research opportunities for STEM students and researchers.

Given the profound influx of digitization during the last two decades, many archival primary source materials have been digitized and are now freely available online, with more assuredly in progress. …

Teaching With The Framework: A Cephalonian Approach, David A. Hurley, Robin Potter Feb 2017

Teaching With The Framework: A Cephalonian Approach, David A. Hurley, Robin Potter

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose

This paper aims to provide academic instruction librarians with a model for integrating concepts from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework into “one-shot” library instruction sessions without losing the practical experience of searching the library resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adapted the Cephalonian method as the structure of first-year library instruction sessions for an English composition class. The sessions were re-designed to emphasize the core concepts of information literacy while incorporating active learning activities and discussion.

Findings

The authors found the Cephalonian method to be a useful structure for incorporating aspects of the ACRL Framework into the …

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler Jan 2017

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Many academic libraries have implemented institutional repositories (IR), which offer some potential for publishing and archiving data but can fall short of usability expectations and requirements. As general purpose repositories, IR's may lack the metadata and service capabilities to dynamically represent data and to effectively capitalize on complex, domain oriented metadata schema such as the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) or the ISO 19115-2014 Geographic information metadata standards. For libraries interested in providing data publishing services, one alternative to the domain agnostic nature of IR content and metadata models is to maintain the IR for traditional document types and in addition …

Metadata may be generally understood to support discovery and performance of bibliographic functions against a given resource or set of resources. For example, a limited set of basic descriptive metadata can be used to index sets of items, group or otherwise associate similar items through shared metadata values, or to establish means of defining and enforcing relevance or other ranking systems. Within the context of curating research data, descriptive and other types of metadata (notably those defined the CCSDS Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System) may be more broadly applied to administer access and reuse policies, define …
