Comparing And Contrasting Luther’S And Aquinas’ Viewpoints Regarding The Essence Of Justification: A Step Towards Promoting Ecumenical Harmony, Paulinus Daeli Osc Jan 2024

Comparing And Contrasting Luther’S And Aquinas’ Viewpoints Regarding The Essence Of Justification: A Step Towards Promoting Ecumenical Harmony, Paulinus Daeli Osc

Obsculta

This article is intended for Christians who recognize the importance of diversity in ecumenical unity. By comparing the views of Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther on the idea of justification, the author seeks to convey that faith in Christ helps one to grow and develop spiritually. The similarities and differences of the two figures offered in this sense invite Christians to see that their differences need not be contradictory and that they can be juxtaposed.

A Study Of Soteriology: A Commentary, Course, And Conclusion Of Brown’S Creek Baptist Church’S Soteriological Beliefs, David Shawn Head Feb 2022

A Study Of Soteriology: A Commentary, Course, And Conclusion Of Brown’S Creek Baptist Church’S Soteriological Beliefs, David Shawn Head

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This thesis identifies a church’s lack of theological awareness of biblical soteriology, investigates the literature for solutions to the ministerial problem, implements the review of literature into a course with curriculum, and the influences on the congregation’s beliefs. The church was a hodgepodge of soteriological beliefs. More specifically, the congregants purported to believe in Calvinism, Arminianism, and Semi-Pelagianism but could not accurately define, adequately describe, or appropriately defend said beliefs. A review of literature led this student to be selective of the soteriological literature known to exist. Simply, the ministerial problem was not because of a lack of literature but …

Legitimizing Violence: Functional Similarities Of The Religious And The Secular Violence, Tahir Topal Feb 2020

Legitimizing Violence: Functional Similarities Of The Religious And The Secular Violence, Tahir Topal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As a consequence of the separation between religion and politics, known as secularism, the discussion about violence has also been divided into two main categories –Religious Violence and Non-Religious Violence– in the modern Western academia. The tendency of the leading scholarly work in the discourse of "religious violence" is that "religion" is inclined to be violent more than secular institutions for several reasons. Therefore, the state's violence, as being secular, steps in to bring peace. And the foundational cause of the theories relies heavily on the essential differences of "religion" and the secular. With counter-arguments, William T. Cavanaugh and Talal …

Recapitulation And Christ’S Active Obedience A Lutheran Retrieval Of Irenaeus, Andrew Bloch Aug 2019

Recapitulation And Christ’S Active Obedience A Lutheran Retrieval Of Irenaeus, Andrew Bloch

Master of Art Theology Thesis

That will conclude the discussion on theologians and their views of the active obedience of Christ. Next, we will look back to the Reformation. Georg Karg questions the imputation of Christ’s active obedience. Through a historical lens, there could be merit to what Karg argues. This will lead to the problem with which this thesis is concerned: Is the active obedience of Christ necessary? Some of the theologians discussed below suggest that the active obedience of Christ is something that can be discarded from the atonement with no major consequences (or even perhaps that removing it strengthens the theology of …

The Good Work Of Justification, Sanctification, And Glorification: John Wesley’S Soteriological Explanation Of Philippians 1:6, Ryan Kristopher Giffin Jan 2018

The Good Work Of Justification, Sanctification, And Glorification: John Wesley’S Soteriological Explanation Of Philippians 1:6, Ryan Kristopher Giffin

The Asbury Journal

Numerous scholars have described John Wesley’s use of scripture as soteriological in orientation. This article discusses how this soteriological hermeneutic is present in Wesley’s explanatory note on Phil 1:6, a well-known Pauline text. The article highlights how Wesley’s brief note on this beloved text can provide readers with an entry point into a discussion of three theological themes Wesley held dear, the themes of justification, sanctification, and glorification. In this way, Wesley’s explanation of Phil 1:6 presents Wesleyans with a convenient way of reflecting on both Wesleyan hermeneutics and Wesleyan theology.

Faith Comes By Hearing: The Interrelationship Of Theology, Faith, And Practice, Nathan Olson Dec 2017

Faith Comes By Hearing: The Interrelationship Of Theology, Faith, And Practice, Nathan Olson

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Olson, Nathan, J. “Faith Comes By Hearing: The Interrelationship Between Faith, Theology, and Practice.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2017. 202 pp.

This work provides a constructive systematic framework which sets forth a conception of faith as Trust in a Promise, utilizing an understanding of justification as God’s declaration of man being made right with Himself, a theology of the Word as an effectual promise and effectual act, and a pneumatology which acknowledges the Spirit’s role to elicit faith by killing and making alive in those who hear the gospel. Through a critical assessment of selected church practices and of the …

Justification By Faith According To The Old Testament: In The Footsteps Of The Reformers, Richard M. Davidson

Martin Luther asserted that “if we lose the doctrine of justification, we lose simply everything.” Luther believed that justification is “the article with and by which the church stands, without which it falls.” In the preface to his Forty-Five Theses drawn up in 1537, Luther makes this impassioned plea: “The article of justification is the master and prince, the lord, the ruler, and the judge over all kinds of doctrines; it preserves and governs all Church doctrine and raises up our conscience before God. Without this article the world is utter death and darkness.” John Calvin considered the doctrine of …

The Moral Implications Of Software Piracy, Kyle Hamrick Dec 2016

The Moral Implications Of Software Piracy, Kyle Hamrick

Student Scholarship – Computer Science

Computer software is integrated into almost every aspect of our professional and personal lives. Much of this software requires payment for use and is legally protected by the copyright system. This paper examines and analyzes the arguments pertaining to the moral use of protected software (digital piracy). The three arguments presented are the “victimless crime” argument, the “noble justification” argument, and the “willing but unable argument.” These three arguments claim that piracy is morally justified in certain cases, and claim that software providers are not harmed in such situations. The three arguments are tested against counter-arguments, and it is discovered …

Justification By Faith: A "Both-And" Approach, Rodrigo N. Reis Nov 2016

Justification By Faith: A "Both-And" Approach, Rodrigo N. Reis

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

The Pauline doctrine of justification is a prevailing subject among biblical scholarship today. Especially, as a New Perspective on Pauline literature rises claiming that Luther was wrong in his view of Justification, since he was blinded by his own context forcing it into his interpretation of the Pauline text. Consequently, the reformed view cannot be right since it interprets the doctrine of justification mainly through soteriological lens, whereas the Apostle had only ecclesiological purposes in mind when addressing the subject. In light of the previous thought, the purpose of the article is to criticize the New Perspective’s exclusive method by …

The Doctrine Of Justification, Valerie Pors Nov 2016

The Doctrine Of Justification, Valerie Pors

The Kabod

This paper seeks to define and describe the doctrine of justification, and to track the historical origin of the doctrine’s present evangelical understanding. The present-day evangelical understanding of the doctrine of justification is quite complex—integrating many scriptural topics such as righteousness, imputation, faith, grace, forgiveness, works and the Law—an understanding which originated with and developed since Luther’s departure from the traditional Roman Catholic view of justification. The paper analyzes Wayne Grudem’s theory of justification as he developed it in his Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

Holiness Unto Whom? John Wesley’S Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In Light Of The Two Kinds Of Righteousness, John Trinklein Aug 2016

Holiness Unto Whom? John Wesley’S Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In Light Of The Two Kinds Of Righteousness, John Trinklein

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

It is the thesis of this dissertation that Wesley’s “distinctive doctrine” of ‘entire sanctification’—indeed, his entire ordo salutis—is predicated upon a different theological starting point than Luther. Furthermore, Wesley used this vantage point to address a different set of issues than those that faced the Reformer. But while the spiritual torpor and moral decay of eighteenth century England truly were deplorable conditions which needed to be addressed, Wesley’s different starting point led both to some unintended theological consequences and to his misunderstanding Luther’s theology regarding sanctification.

Driven By God: Active Justification And Definitive Sanctification In The Soteriology Of Bavinck, Comrie, Witsius, And Kuyper., Jae-Eun Park

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

For more than two millennia believers have struggled with the antinomy of God’s absolute sovereignty over and man’s ultimate responsibility in justification and sanctification. For at least the past several hundred years theologians have used some version of the terms “active justification” and “definitive sanctification” in an attempt to illuminate this mystery. However, in the past decade scho lars have begun to criticize these concepts, saying that they are unsupported in Scripture, lead to theological confusion, and are of no practical benefit to believers. Through the work of theologians from the broader Dutch Reformed tradition, especially Herman Bavinck (1854-1921), Alexander …

The Experience Of Regeneration And Erosion Of Certainty In The Theology Of Second-Generation Quakers: No Place For Doubt?, Nikki Coffey Tousley Jan 2015

The Experience Of Regeneration And Erosion Of Certainty In The Theology Of Second-Generation Quakers: No Place For Doubt?, Nikki Coffey Tousley

Quaker Studies

The convincement accounts of first- and second-generation Quakers reveal changes in the implicit, narrative theology of regeneration and revelation, despite a relatively consistent articulated theology. Early Friends experienced one, overarching grace that encompassed justification, sanctification and the restoration of creation, emphasizing the culminating experience of regeneration. Anxiety about election, inherited from Puritanism, was replaced with assurance grounded in an experience of victory over sin that both justified and sanctified, and conferred a new, immediate understanding of the truth. This understanding was a subjective, relational knowledge of God's presence that was only secondarily propositional. Without the broad vision linking justification and …

Condemnation, Death, And Justification: From What Is One Saved In Paul's Thought?, Mark E. Maxwell Jan 2015

Condemnation, Death, And Justification: From What Is One Saved In Paul's Thought?, Mark E. Maxwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Salvation requires that a person or group of people have a problem, a peril I am calling it, like disease, tyranny, eternal damnation, or the unbridled wrath of God. Paul's gospel promises salvation. What, exactly, is the peril from which one is saved in Paul's thought? The traditional response to this question is that believers are saved from the punishment of death, and from the wrath of God. The former is the legal consequence of Adam's transgression in Eden in the primordial past, and the latter is the legal consequence of a guilty verdict in a divine courtroom in the …

A Catholic Looks At Quakerism, Michael Mullett Nov 2014

A Catholic Looks At Quakerism, Michael Mullett

Quaker Studies

In this article Michael Mullet first sketches the well-advertised dissimilarities between Catholicism, the epitome, for many, of 'conservative' Christianity, and Quakerism, which brought to a high point of development the religious radicalism implicit in the Reformation. However, Mullett argues that, underlyingly, relatively superficial dissonances over such issues as church order and (more significantly) sacrament, Tridentine Catholicism and Quakerism shared, in opposition to the Reformation's key principles of justification by faith alone and its corollary predestination, an abiding, soteriological and anthropological acceptance (grounded in the Epistle of James) of the role of free will and of justification and sanctification by works …

The New Perspective From Paul, Mark Seifrid

The strong attraction which Judaism held for Paul’s converts in Galatia and elsewhere is hard to explain if Israel as a whole was generally lamenting its condition.Early Jewish writings similarly give evidence of variety and nuance in Jewish self-understanding in this period.37 The Scroll of Fasting (Megillat Ta’anit), for example, marks the celebration of Hasmonean victories within Jewish life, days of celebration on which one was not to fast.

Shaped By The Spirit: Spirit Christology As A Framework For Preaching Sanctification, Jonathan Rusnak Apr 2014

Shaped By The Spirit: Spirit Christology As A Framework For Preaching Sanctification, Jonathan Rusnak

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Rusnak, Jonathan W. "Shaped by the Spirit: Spirit Christology as a Framework for Preaching Sanctification." S.T.M. Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2014. 128 pp.

This thesis offers an account of preaching sanctification grounded broadly in the trinitarian economy of salvation and specifically in the person and work of Jesus Christ as receiver, bearer, and giver of the Holy Spirit. Grounded in atonement theory alone, other accounts of preaching sanctification are unable to address any number of concerns that arise in the sanctified life. In addition, atonement theory alone does not ground an account of preaching sanctification that maintains the nexus indivulsus of …

Justification And Sanctification In The Southern Baptist Church In West Virginia; Implications In Worship And Practice Of Faith, Todd Hill Mar 2014

Justification And Sanctification In The Southern Baptist Church In West Virginia; Implications In Worship And Practice Of Faith, Todd Hill

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to investigate the doctrines of justification and progressive sanctification and its implications in the Southern Baptist Churches in West Virginia. In the Southern Baptist Churches in West Virginia, there seems to be much confusion concerning the subject of justification and sanctification in the life of the believer. This confusion appears to grow out of a misunderstanding of sanctification and its relationship to justification from the error of Roman Catholic doctrine of blending justification and sanctification. The result of this study will expose the disparity of understanding concerning these doctrines and produce a teaching resource …

The Pauline Model Of Atonement In Romans 3:19-31, Norm Mathers Jan 2014

The Pauline Model Of Atonement In Romans 3:19-31, Norm Mathers

Norm Mathers

The Pauline model of Romans 3:19-31 is a description of substitutionary atonement. Sin, guilt, righteousness, faith in Christ, justification, redemption, propitiation, Christ a covering, atonement in his blood, substitute, justice, justifier, and the principle of faith are descriptive of this view of the atonement. A barrage of literature has arisen against penal substitution. Penal substitution has been confused with substitutionary atonement. Penal substitution has also been referred to as penal substitutionary atonement which isn’t substitutionary atonement. Substitutionary atonement has been clouded by such atonement theories as Christus Victor. Aulen’s view of reconciliation doesn’t adequately describe the New Testament atonement. Substitutionary …

Man’S Great Dilemma And God’S Greater Provision: The Doctrine Of Justification And Its Necessary Role As The Foundation For Understanding Romans 6, Christina L. Fuselli

Senior Honors Theses

All of mankind faces a great dilemma, whether they realize it or not, regarding their state of depravity in sin. No man could ever devise a solution for the problem; even great philosophers have been stumped over how a righteous God could possibly save sinners. Yet God’s answer to man’s dilemma is the death of Christ, whereby He has made the way to declare man righteous while remaining righteous Himself. The marvelous truths presented in Romans go even further to reveal that not only has righteousness been provided, but those who have been identified in the death and resurrection of …
