Calvinism In England During The Reformation Period As Seen In The Formularies Of The Established Church, Walter Sohn Nov 1963

Calvinism In England During The Reformation Period As Seen In The Formularies Of The Established Church, Walter Sohn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The object of this thesis is to trace the introduction of Calvinism into the official and unofficial formularies of the Church of England during the Reformation period. Calvinism is defined as any distinctive theological teaching advocated by John Calvin, the leader of the Reformed Church during the middle of the sixteenth century. The official formularies were the confessional statements and prescribed forms of worship ordered to be used in the established Church by the English monarch. The unofficial formularies were theological writings approved by Convocation of the English clergy. While used in the Church, they had neither the approval of …

The Concept Of Hope In First Peter, Frederick Naumann Aug 1963

The Concept Of Hope In First Peter, Frederick Naumann

Bachelor of Divinity

Peter again relates his ethics to his certain hope. Peter is positively certain that the inheritance. is ready, prepared and preserved by God, and need only be revealed. There is no "maybe;" no "if''' in Peter's thinking. The masterpiece is under a canvas, all that is to be done is to have the canvas lifted. In this light of certain culmination of his expectation, Peter sets forth his ethics. Everything is viewed in the light of this hope

Minnesota Missionary--Minister : A Biography Of Heinrich Julius Mueller, Henry Charles Mueller Aug 1963

Minnesota Missionary--Minister : A Biography Of Heinrich Julius Mueller, Henry Charles Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

It is with a deep feeling of respect for my great-grandfather and a desire to praise the God whom he worshipped and proclaimed that, I undertake this brief biography. So far as I know, this is the first extended attempt at writing a biography of this pioneer Minnesota missionary. There are several very short biographies extant, but I found no extended works available. My grandfather often mentioned that his father was humble and did not look for publicity. This is quite evident from the paucity of material available on this man.

Matthew 23: The Comprehensive Polemic Of Jesus Christ, Ray Martens Jun 1963

Matthew 23: The Comprehensive Polemic Of Jesus Christ, Ray Martens

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There is no lack of material that illustrates Jesus’ positive teaching on the nature of the kingdom He is establishing, of His role in God’s plan, of the relation of man to God, of the role of God’s children among men, of the function of the law, of the nature of discipleship, and many more specific areas. There is furthermore a significant amount of material which His own teaching. And discredits those who would oppose Him. It is such an extended statement of the Teacher, a statement of attack and criticism recorded by Matthew, that is the subject of this …

Pieper's Principium In Its Historical-Theological Setting, David Meyer Jun 1963

Pieper's Principium In Its Historical-Theological Setting, David Meyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

My purpose is not merely to seek a critical and objective analysis of Pieper’s understanding of Scripture as the present-day principium theologiae, but my purpose is to reproduce Pieper’s theology of the principium against the backdrop of his theological world as he saw it.

Quinque Viave: The Five Ways Of St Thomas Aquinas, Robert Ridall Jun 1963

Quinque Viave: The Five Ways Of St Thomas Aquinas, Robert Ridall

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Many of the ancient Stoics never experienced any serious problem concerning the existence of God because they tended to be pantheistic. The orthodox Stoic could put his hand anywhere in the universe and affirm with confidence, "Here is god.” Plato’s “highest good” and Aristotle’s “unmoved mover” are actually monotheistic proofs. Both of these men accepted the traditional gods of Greece but they were searching for a metaphysical ultimate to account for all reality. However when one encounters St. Thomas in the thirteenth century he discovers that these metaphysical ultimates of the ancients resemble the Christian God. St. Thomas calmly presents …

The Family Worship Hour, Herman A. Etzold Jun 1963

The Family Worship Hour, Herman A. Etzold

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to tell the story of The Family Worship Hour, to urge more widespread publicity of this project in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and to evaluate the program in the light of contemporary theological thinking on the subject of the Church's use of the mass communications media for the propagation of the Christian faith.

Was Martha's Confession In John 11:27 Used In The Early Church As A Creed, Robert Holst Jun 1963

Was Martha's Confession In John 11:27 Used In The Early Church As A Creed, Robert Holst

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis is to determine whether John 11:27 reflects an early Christian creed or, as an exclamation from Martha, served in the early Church as a creed. In his otherwise excellent chapter “Creedal Elements in the New Testament” in Early Christian Creeds, J. N. D. Kelly does not list John 11:27 as “evidence in the New Testament to show that the faith was already beginning to harden into conventional summaries. This seems an unfortunate omission since Martha’s confession contains not only one of two, but three Christological affirmations joined together asyndetically.

The Cosmological Proof For The Existence Of God In Post-Reformation Theology, Otto Stahlke Jun 1963

The Cosmological Proof For The Existence Of God In Post-Reformation Theology, Otto Stahlke

It ls the aim of this study to inquire whether the Post-Reformation theologians were aware of the difficulty which the cosmological proof has encountered in later thought, and, if so, how they responded to this difficulty.

A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The purpose of the study at hand has been twofold: 1) to examine the doctrine of the intermediate state as it is held by Conservative Evangelicals, and 2) by means of comparison and contrast, to exhibit the ways in which the Seventh-Day Adventist position agrees with or differs from the Conservative Evangelical position.

Church Architectural Planning For Evangelical Christian Education, Paul Bullman May 1963

Church Architectural Planning For Evangelical Christian Education, Paul Bullman

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The church and Christian education are very closely related. The New Testament teaches that the church is the body of Christ. This body is composed of human beings whose lips, hands, and feet are dedicated, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, to the revealing of Christ to the world.l It is the evangelical position that points up the fact that all men are depraved, or incapable of saving themselves. Salvation can only come from the divine miracle of regeneration.

For all "Who hold to this evangelical standard of salvation by regeneration, the true aim of Christian education is two …

"Heart" (Kardia) In The Doctrine Of Soteriology, Clyde James Zehr May 1963

"Heart" (Kardia) In The Doctrine Of Soteriology, Clyde James Zehr

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem under consideration was an investigation of the doctrine of soteriology set forth by conservative evangelical theologians in the light of the New Testament usage of the term "heart" (kardia). The term "heart" (kardia) is a prominent word in the New Testament, especially in the areas referring specifically to sin and salvation from sin. Any doctrine of salvation from sin will, therefore, be greatly influenced and affected by the interpretation placed upon the New Testament writers' meaning of this word. Basically, the problem had three main areas of investigation: first, to determine the scriptural meaning of "heart" (kardia) in …

An Examination Of The Definition Terms Used In The Biblical Doctrine Of The Atonement, Gary L. Minshull May 1963

An Examination Of The Definition Terms Used In The Biblical Doctrine Of The Atonement, Gary L. Minshull

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Evangelicals have always regarded the Bible as the ultimate source of doctrine as well as morale. This attitude applies, of course, to its teaching on the Atonement of Christ. This scriptural teaching on this subject is described by a number of definitive terms, the meaning of which is crucial to the formulation of a biblical doctrine of the Atonement. These terms, however, have never been studied in a comprehensive manner, and in no case has evidence been presented to show their meaning in relation to each other.

A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor May 1963

A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Belief in an intermediate state has never been wholly absent from religious thought. One purpose of this investigation has been to examine data concerning an intermediate state, and what its nature is. By the expression, intermediate state, is meant the realm or condition in which the souls of men exist from the time of physical death to the resurrection of their bodies.

An Approach To The Concept Of Biblical Communication As The Core Of Christian Education, Eugene Floyd Kester May 1963

An Approach To The Concept Of Biblical Communication As The Core Of Christian Education, Eugene Floyd Kester

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In the process of genuinely attempting to live and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with an "exploding" contemporary world, some people have become increasingly desperate to know how.

This necessity, they have discovered, is disturbing multitudes of sincere Christians in every walk of life. Many have found themselves turning from one "successful" method to another; while others have "faithfully" held to some favorite or "honored" procedure .

A Study Of Epistemology In The Theologies Of Emil Brunner, Martin Heinecken, Taito Kantonen, And Joseph Sittler, John Heinemeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Chapter I of the paper will deal with Brunner and Chapter II with Heinecken, Kantonen and Sittler in comparison to Brunner. The concluding section will summarize Brunner’s position, evaluate the comparison made between his position and that of the three Lutherans, and raise several questions for further investigation in this field.

Factors Related To The Life And Growth Of Adult Bible Classes In The Lutheran Church, Paul Pallmeyer May 1963

Factors Related To The Life And Growth Of Adult Bible Classes In The Lutheran Church, Paul Pallmeyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A serious concern of many Protestant churches today is their failure to enlist a large proportion of their adult members in group Bible study. One such church body is The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. As will presently be shown, this denomination has vigorously promoted adult Bible study over the last decade and a half, but there remains a continued resistance by the adult membership to participation in Bible classes.

The present project was designed.to uncover some factors which show a relationship to this resistance to group Bible study by members of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. A series of interviews with Bible …

The Theology Of Frederick Henry Quitman As Illustrated Primarily By His Catechism And Hymbook, Waldemar Wehmeier May 1963

The Theology Of Frederick Henry Quitman As Illustrated Primarily By His Catechism And Hymbook, Waldemar Wehmeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This research, therefore, was motivated by a desire to know more about the man who stood as a “Saul among the host of Israel" determining the course of the New York Ministerium for twenty-one years, given an honorary S.T.D. by Harvard University, so revered by his congregation that when he could no longer walk he was carried into the pulpit to a chair, and yet summarily dismissed by many as a rationalist and a socinian.

The Glory And Glorification Of Jesus Christ In The Gospel Of John, Arthur Strege

Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton Rudnick May 1963

Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton Rudnick

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The conclusion of this study is that Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod were not related closely enough for either to exert major influence upon the other. Basic factors in the background of each group kept them at a distance from one another, and, while their paths were often parallel, they never actually converged. The relationship was, for the most part, cordial, but never intimate, with the result that there was no important interchange of ideas and attitudes. It is for this reason that the word "in" had to become "and"--"Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod,” signifying the revised view of at …

The Suffering Love Of God: The Tension Between Judgement And Grace In The Pre-Exilic Prophets, Theodore Ludwig May 1963

The Suffering Love Of God: The Tension Between Judgement And Grace In The Pre-Exilic Prophets, Theodore Ludwig

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

It is therefore the purpose of this study to defend the thesis that the juxtaposition of the message of total judgment and that of full grace has a theological basis. There is a great tension between judgment and grace; yet these two seemingly opposed items have a deep unity in the nature of Yahweh. Therefore the ultimate purpose of this study is to determine the prophetic understanding of the nature of Yahweh. The conclusion reached and supported throughout is that it is the suffering love of Yahweh which forms the basis of the message of both judgment and grace which …

The Doctrine Of Infant Baptism In The German Protestant Theology Of The Nineteenth Century, David Scaer May 1963

The Doctrine Of Infant Baptism In The German Protestant Theology Of The Nineteenth Century, David Scaer

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This work is not written primarily to give answer to the difficulties which might arise in connection with infant baptism. This it might, do incidentally and this is certainly the author's wish. What is endeavored here is to analyze the doctrine or infant baptism as it appeared in the nineteenth century in Germany, the land of Luther. In so far as we are dealing with a limited period of time within certain defined geographical limits, our work is historically orientated. But in far as the various teachings on infant baptism are analyzed, this task belongs to that of systematic theology. …

Some Proposed Criteria For An Examination Of Adult Pre-Membership Instruction, Michael Keyne May 1963

Some Proposed Criteria For An Examination Of Adult Pre-Membership Instruction, Michael Keyne

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is primarily concerned with the criteria for the structuring of adult pre-membership instruction, in the light of its unique position within the field of Christian education. The broad area of Christian education has the problem of teaching individuals who exhibit relative degrees of faith and knowledge. Functionally, most of Christian education is based upon the assumption that a common denominator of faith is present, no matter how minimal it may be. Since adult pre-membership instruction can make no such assumption, it follows that the whole philosophy of Christian education must be re-examined in the light of pre-membership instruction.

The Messiah In Exilic And Postexilic Eschatological Prophecy, Werner Wadewitz May 1963

The Messiah In Exilic And Postexilic Eschatological Prophecy, Werner Wadewitz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We hope to have to have shown on the basis or the Messianic elements in these exilic and postexilic eschatological prophecies, that by the time the last books of the Old Testament canon were being written and added--of which these were the last prophetic books--the picture of the Messiah was such as God wanted to reveal in the time of "shadows," till the "body” would come. If the portrait of the Messianic Priest-King is not as clear nor complete as we would like to see it, perhaps the thinking behind this was that for this reason people would become more …
