A History Of The Arkansas Assemblies Of God 1908-1968, Earl R. Teeter Jan 1970

A History Of The Arkansas Assemblies Of God 1908-1968, Earl R. Teeter

OBU Graduate Theses

Religious freedom has played an important role in the nation and state. Because of the freedom guaranteed by the United States Constitution, a colorful array of denominations and sects have arisen. One group, the Pentecostals, have been called the ''Third force in Protestantism." Of this group the Assemblies of God are the largest, not only nationally and world-wide, but also in Arkansas. In fact, the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God is the largest district per capital of any of the Assemblies of God Districts in the United States.

For some reason a study on the Arkansas Assemblies of …

A Study Of Factors Related To Becoming A Prophet As Set Forth In The New Testament, Clyde W. Coleman

OBU Graduate Theses

The New Testament reveals that the cause of Christ was served by many individuals during the first century A.D. The kind of work they did varied (Acts 6:1-4; I Corinthians 12:8-10, 28; Ephesians 4:11). Their personalities and abilities varied. They served in different localities and under different conditions. One kind of work . which many of them did that appeared to be more significant than the other kinds of work done was that of the prophet, the preacher or proclaimer. Christians who served in this capacity appeared to have been compelled or motivated to such service by a compelling influence …

The Current Use Of Choral Church Music In Higher Education In Arkansas, Edwin Lee Rettstatt

OBU Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study were: (1) to survey the current use of choral church music in the music curricula of institutions of higher learning in Arkansas; and (2) to determine its influence and extent of use by the faculties of these schools during the 1965-1966 academic yer. A Study Of The Role Of Churches In The Enactment Of The Arkansas Prohibition Law Of 1917, Ralph Bradley Hoshaw Jan 1969

A Study Of The Role Of Churches In The Enactment Of The Arkansas Prohibition Law Of 1917, Ralph Bradley Hoshaw

OBU Graduate Theses

Churches have been involved in the moral and ethical standards of the United States and its political subdivisions since the formation of the nation. Major questions about the churches' involvement as a social force in the nation or in the community concern: (1) the degree of involvement, (2) the methods employed and (3) the relative effectiveness of church influence upon the mores and laws of any society or state. To answer these questions, a historical study must be made of a particular moral problem in a specific locale and of the role that church influence or direct action played in …

An Introduction To And Critical Reproduction Of The Z.C. Taylor Manuscript: The Rise And Progress Of Baptist Missions In Brazil, Glendon Donald Grober

OBU Graduate Theses

Z. C. Taylor and W. B. Bagby were sent as Baptist missionaries to Salvador, Baia, Brazil in 1882. The two men began the Baptist work together. The name of W. B. Bagby is well known, but that of Taylor was largely ignored. The histories of Baptist work in Brazil, both in English and Portuguese, made little mention of Z. C. Taylor.

The purpose of this study is two fold. First, it seeks to emphasize and illustrate the vital role of Z. C. Taylor in the earliest Baptist initiatives in Brazil. Second, it makes readily accessible his personal account of many …

Israel: A Dividing Nation, James C. Mccommas Jr. Aug 1967

Israel: A Dividing Nation, James C. Mccommas Jr.

OBU Graduate Theses

The United Monarchy of Israel divided into two independent states, Israel and Judah, when Rehoboam was acclaimed king after Solomon's death (922). Widespread disagreement exists among Old Testament scholars about when the separation occurred and multifarious divergence of opinion also exists about why it happened.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors, major and minor, which led to the division of Israel. Such scholars as Bright, Orlinsky, and Rowley feel that the split occurred because Rehoboam (Solomon's son) was weak, refused to ease the burdens placed on the people by his rather and failed to accept advice …

A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall Jan 1967

A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall

OBU Graduate Theses

Recently Dr. Clyde T. Francisco, who is professor of Old Testament interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, suggested that one of the great mysteries of the Bible is contained in the sin and death of Moses. Inquiry into the subject has validated his statement, for the interpretation of Moses' sin and death has been subject to many theories and speculations. The following Biblical passages are concerned with the sin and death of Moses: Numbers 20:1-13; 22-29; 27:12-14; Deuteronomy 1:35-40; 3:23-29; 4:21-24; 32:48-52; 34:1-7. Other related Biblical passages include Psalm 106:32-33, ·Mark 9:2-13 and synoptic parallels including Matthew 17: 1-13 and …

The Concept Of Spirit As Related To The Knowledge Of God In The Thought Of Paul Tillich And Nicholas Berdyaev, Wilbur W. Brannon Jan 1967

The Concept Of Spirit As Related To The Knowledge Of God In The Thought Of Paul Tillich And Nicholas Berdyaev, Wilbur W. Brannon

OBU Graduate Theses

The problem of knowing God has not been solely a twentieth century phenomenon, but the current "death of God" theology has brought the problem into focus within the Christian community in terms of secular involvement. A "Christian agnosticism" has emerged from within the Church criticizing archaic ecclesiastical structures and confessions. Those criticisms have been leveled by radical theologians, represented by Altizer, Hamilton, and Van Buren, who have denied for humanity a living God and consequently a knowledge of God.

Modern man has suffered the loss of life's meaning and its supportive Reality. "God", therefore, has become a term without meaningful …

A History Of The Beginning Of The Jonesboro Association Of Missionary Baptist Churches, Elton Mccann

The primary data for this study has been gathered from the minutes of the associations and churches which were involved in the beginning of the Jonesboro Association. In addition to minutes, the manuscripts of Kitchens …

Ethical Values For Living: A Study Of The Ethical Teachings Contained In The Epistle Of James, Wayne S. Smith Aug 1964

Ethical Values For Living: A Study Of The Ethical Teachings Contained In The Epistle Of James, Wayne S. Smith

OBU Graduate Theses

The social and ethical concepts laid down by the early Jewish Christians have proved to be profound guides for churches and individual Christians. The Epistle of James, which is representative of first century Jewish literature, deals with significant social and ethical values. These social and ethical values are the very heart of the message of the Epistle of James.

Consequently, these values become a practical guide to the layman, who is not trained in theology, in applying Christian principles in daily life relationships. The primary problem in this study was to determine the significant ethical values in the Epistle of …
