FOREWORD President John C. Kilgo, of Trinity College, prepared the contents of this volume to be presented in manuscript form to the members of Bishop Duncan's family. He was for many years closely associated with Bishop Duncan and between them there existed the warmest and most intimate friendship. A number of Bishop Duncan's friends and admirers expressed a desire to have a copy of this appreciation in permanent form, and Dr. Kilgo has kindly given us permission to have the manuscript printed. The message delivered to the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1880, on behalf of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The two separate denominations generally sent greetings or fraternal messages while they were operating separately. The pamphlet was published much later, and contains a biography of Carlisle, a note from Methodist Bishop Edwin D. Mouzon, and the text of the address. The address was published in this form in 1925 in the Alabama Christian Advocate, and then in pamphlet form around 1943
