The Experience Of The Oblate Sisters Of Providence During The Civil War Era, Diane Batts Morrow
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
In this paper, based on a talk delivered during the 2012 Annual Meeting in Miami Gardens, Florida, Dr. Morrow delves into the annals of the Oblate Sisters of Providence and reveals the challenges they faced during the Civil War Era and their strength and ingenuity in finding resourceful solutions to continue in their mission to educate black children and provide much-needed services for slaves and free blacks during this time. Their capacity for commitment and creativity at this time of existential conflict stands as a model even today.

Suffering As Glory In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And James Cone, Joseph S. Flipper, Katy Leamy
Suffering As Glory In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And James Cone, Joseph S. Flipper, Katy Leamy
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Based on the paper delivered during the 2012 Annual Meeting, Flipper and Leamy elaborate the implications of the respective reflections on the crucifixion of Christ and his descent into hell in the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar and James H. Cone. They conclude that, together, Balthasar and Cone supply a theological justification for seeing the oppressed and rejected as the privileged media of God’s glorious revelation. Frederick
The Representation Of Blacks And Hispanics In Media Depictions Of The Catholic Church, Sven Smith, Naseer Malik
The Representation Of Blacks And Hispanics In Media Depictions Of The Catholic Church, Sven Smith, Naseer Malik
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Fifty years ago, Pope Paul VI promulgated the Decree on Means of Social Communication at the end of the second session of the Second Vatican Council.2 In this document, the Council outlined the responsibilities of the media in the rapidly-changing post WWII global society. Here, Smith and Malik present the results of an empirical study of the media’s approach to the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis I. They show that the media reinforces stereotypes of the U.S. Catholic Church as a white institution by choosing to over-represent Catholic membership as well as leadership as …
Charism Made Spirituality, Johann G. Roten
Charism Made Spirituality, Johann G. Roten
Marian Library Studies
Elusive and multi-faceted as it may be, the meaning of charism creates associations including grace, gratuity, gift, and generosity. It seems widely established that a charism is the result of divine largesse, an expression of God's favor, and a gratuitous gift of his love. Mentioned seventeen times in the New Testament, the term charism is indebted primarily to Paul's theology of grace, and its twofold instrumentalization as gift extraordinaire or grace of state. The division thus marked highlights the complementarity between the special graces of healing, speaking in tongues, and miracles, but also the more utilitarian form of charism destined …
Brief Historical Overview Of Consecrated Life, M. Jean Frisk
Brief Historical Overview Of Consecrated Life, M. Jean Frisk
Marian Library Studies
The Church has known forms of consecrated life since its foundation. However, the phenomena that people band together for the sake of religion and with the idea that good things and happiness can come about by these bonded lifestyles can be traced to ancient cultures. There is early evidence in pre-Christian classical cultures of small social groups that band together for the sake of religious belief. The examples and types of common life listed below by no means touch the immense range of such bandings and bindings. The point is simply to give brief examples.
Charism And The Consecrated Life In The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Danielle Peters
Charism And The Consecrated Life In The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Danielle Peters
Marian Library Studies
The rapid social, political, and cultural changes at the end of the nineteenth and at the dawn of the twentieth centuries are felt even today. Yet, the Church of that time was still predominantly European concerning her wellanschauung, discipline, and exercise of authority. In addition, "the strong resistance of the institutional church to the uncertainties of the post-Enlightenment world along with the maintenance of a nineteenth-century fortress identity at its institutional center had set up tensions within the various European Catholic communities." How did this mentality influence the communities of religious life and their awareness of being bearers of a …
Marian Profile Of Classical Orders, Vincent Wiseman
Marian Profile Of Classical Orders, Vincent Wiseman
Marian Library Studies
In 1839, when Pere Lacordaire wanted to reestablish the Dominican Order in France, he was faced with the restrictions put in place by the French Revolution. In his letter to the French people, Pere Lacordaire pointed out that after trees are cut down, new shoots spring from the stumps and additional trees rise from buried seeds. His analogy was that religious life cannot be suppressed for long but will reemerge from new shoots and buried seeds, as he put it, "Oak trees and monks are eternal."
The Holy Spirit has given and continues to give to the Church a marvelous …

The Marian Profile Of Congregations Founded In The Seventeenth To The Nineteenth Century: Re-Receiving Our Marian Charism And Tradition, Thomas A. Thompson
Marian Library Studies
Many gathered here at this symposium on the consecrated life are members of these Marian congregations founded in the nineteenth century and are now interested in reclaiming some of these insights into the qualities of the person of Mary as manifested in the charisms, traditions, and roots of their congregations. This recovery is motivated not only by the desire for a deeper personal understanding but also for making these insights available to a larger and contemporary audience. Sometimes the charisms of the past, expressed in what today may appear to be a limited context, are not understood.
