Shabalala, Nokukhanya, P “Truth and Reconciliation in Light of the Cross: Martin Luther’s Theology of the Cross in Relationship to the Current Ubuntu Theology of Desmond Tutu.” Master of Arts Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 97pp.
The issue of suffering in Africa has resulted in Africans attributing suffering to God’s work, ancestors’ anger and evil spirits or witchcraft’s work. This is a skewed understanding of suffering. And not only that, the suffering that has been perpetrated by the civil war has birthed the phenomenon of child soldiers resulting in Africa casting out its children. In both of these presented issues sub-Saharan …
Mission In The Margins: An Emplaced Missional Ecclesiology For The Brazilian Church In Urban Environments, Samuel Fuhrmann
Mission In The Margins: An Emplaced Missional Ecclesiology For The Brazilian Church In Urban Environments, Samuel Fuhrmann
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Fuhrmann, Samuel Reduss. “Mission in the Margins: An Emplaced Missional Ecclesiology for the Brazilian Church in Urban Environments.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2019. 217 pp.
As the church tries to engage in God’s mission in Brazilian metropolises, it needs to account for the reality of the favelas. Favela is a housing category that refers to an urban built environment where one encounters a rich social, cultural, and spatial diversity, and often the problems of violence and poverty, all of which configure a challenge to the church. How does the church understand this reality? How does urban missional ecclesiology account for …
Purity/Impurity And The Lordship Of Jesus In The Gospel According To Mark, David Issac Lewis
Purity/Impurity And The Lordship Of Jesus In The Gospel According To Mark, David Issac Lewis
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Lewis, David Issac.
“Purity/Impurity and the Lordship of Jesus in the Gospel according to Mark.”
Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2020.
238 pp.
Most modern scholars read purity/impurity to be a major theme in the handwashing controversy of Mark 7:1–23, and the majority further interpret the parenthetical participle clause in Mark 7:19b to indicate that Jesus abrogates the food regulations of Leviticus 11. Many interpreters also detect purity/impurity to be a theme in the three miracle accounts of Mark 1:40–45 and 5:21–43 and in the exorcism accounts. Fewer interpreters, however, read these various accounts together in light of the entire narrative …
Lived Kardecism - A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Brazilian Spiritism, William Miller
Lived Kardecism - A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Brazilian Spiritism, William Miller
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Miller, William D. “Lived Kardecism: A Phenomenological Approach to Understanding Brazilian Spiritism.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2019. 327 pp.
This dissertation addresses a problem that faces the researcher of Brazilian Spiritism, namely that there is a need for a particular kind of account that takes the lived experience of religion as its foundation; an account of the lived experience of Spiritists who practice Spiritism as a religion in the Brazilian context and find value in it for their spiritual journey. This study answers the question as to how Spiritists articulate what is spiritual, relate to religion, and experience spiritual significance …
Giftive Dialogue: An Analysis Of The Use Of The Giftive Metaphor In The Pluralist Context Of The Lutheran University Of Brazil, Maximiliano Silva
Giftive Dialogue: An Analysis Of The Use Of The Giftive Metaphor In The Pluralist Context Of The Lutheran University Of Brazil, Maximiliano Silva
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Silva, Maximiliano Wolfgramm. “Giftive Dialogue: An Analysis of the Use of the Giftive Metaphor in the Pluralist Context of the Lutheran University of Brazil.” Ph. D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2019. 189 pp.
Modernity’s secularization project and specific characteristics of Brazilian history have promoted pluralism to the status of a moral demand, especially in the academic context. Such a situation posits challenges and opportunities for ULBRA’s campus pastors. That is so because ULBRA’s chaplains’ pastoral ministry is the most visible and symbolic expression of ULBRA’s confessional identity. Because of the claims made by Christianity, that identity has exclusivist traits. Therefore, it …
Recapitulation And Christ’S Active Obedience A Lutheran Retrieval Of Irenaeus, Andrew Bloch
Recapitulation And Christ’S Active Obedience A Lutheran Retrieval Of Irenaeus, Andrew Bloch
Master of Art Theology Thesis
That will conclude the discussion on theologians and their views of the active obedience of Christ. Next, we will look back to the Reformation. Georg Karg questions the imputation of Christ’s active obedience. Through a historical lens, there could be merit to what Karg argues. This will lead to the problem with which this thesis is concerned: Is the active obedience of Christ necessary? Some of the theologians discussed below suggest that the active obedience of Christ is something that can be discarded from the atonement with no major consequences (or even perhaps that removing it strengthens the theology of …
Codex Boernerianus A Textual Analysis Of 1 Timothy, Alexander Fisher
Codex Boernerianus A Textual Analysis Of 1 Timothy, Alexander Fisher
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Fisher, Alexander, R “Codex Boernerianus: A Textual Analysis of 1 Timothy.” Master’s thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2019.
Long associated with the monastery of St Gall, the ninth century bilingual manuscript Codex Boernerianus (G) has been studied by modern scholars since the sixteenth century. Over time, the relationship between the Latin and Greek texts of the codex gained interest as did the relationship of the codex to its known ancestors, Codices Claromontanus (D) and Augiensis (F). The scope of this thesis is limited to 1 Timothy, offering a textual analysis with comparison to D F, and a Latin and Greek transcription of …

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Muehler, Carl B. “Overcoming Barriers: Helping Navy Chaplains Understand the Need and Implementation of Self-care.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 115 pp.
The Navy Chaplain serves with Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard personnel throughout the world and often in challenging environments including at sea and combat operations. The Navy Chaplain is unique because the chaplain has complete confidentiality and may be the only caregiver with a deployed unit, which can take its toll on the chaplain. Self-care is critical for the chaplain on a personal level and to maintain effectiveness in the support to the personnel …

A Narrative Inquiry Of The Lived Experience Of Three Female Assemblies Of God Lead Pastors, Ryan Harris
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Harris, Ryan L. “A Narrative Inquiry into the Lived Experience of Three Female Assemblies of God Lead Pastors.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2019. 396 pp.
This study utilizes qualitative narrative inquiry to examine the lived experience of three female Assemblies of God lead pastors. It does so to investigate the following research question: Given the complex and inconsistent history and present reality faced by women in the Assemblies of God, how do the participants in this study narrate their lived experience as lead pastors in Assemblies of God churches?
To engage in this investigation, the study begins by explaining the …

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Stolarczyk, R., Brian “THEOLOGICAL AND FINANCIAL INTEGRITY IN CHURCH BUDGETING: A STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF BUDGET THEORY EDUCATION USING A TWO KINDS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS FRAMEWORK.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 182 pp.
The operating budget at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Port Charlotte, FL emphasized the management of God’s gifts but did not adequately emphasize their primary relationship with God during the budgetary process and did not strongly connect the budget with their congregational mission. A three-hour seminar was developed to teach budget theory and the Lutheran doctrine of the two kinds of righteousness in …

In its report, Church Relations in the 21st Century,1 the Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR) addresses many of the challenges faced by the Missouri Synod as she enters a new era of global interconnection and is consequently confronted with a variety of church bodies near and far who seek support from, cooperation with, and even altar-and-pulpit fellowship with her. In this report, the CTCR helpfully points out that the differing histories of other church bodies around the world have caused their assumptions regarding ecumenical relationships to differ from those of the Missouri Synod, which were themselves shaped by …
The Texts Of Faith In Times Of Tragedy, Ryan Anderson
The Texts Of Faith In Times Of Tragedy, Ryan Anderson
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
This paper will focus on that phenomenon and its longstanding tension with American Christianity. I will investigate how American civil religion emerges when faced with tragedy. The investigation will be done by way of a case study: a thorough analysis of Celine Dion’s performance of “God Bless America,” the history of the original song and its author, and the variety of responses her performance has fostered both then and now, particularly online. What we will discover is that practitioners of civil religion existentially and therapeutically depend on an “encounter with the divine” during times of national tragedy. This encounter is …

The second decade of the twenty-first century is drawing to a close. In the realm of the sciences, round-the-clock work continues to discover whatever might fill in the next paradigmatic gap, cure some heretofore fatal disease, or make the tabloid headlines.1 If the recent past is any indicator, from the discovery of the Higgs Particle at CERN to the enamoring photos of the Pluto system and Ultima Thule by the aptly named New Horizons space probe, science has and will continue to stir excitement in the global public.
Funerals- Typical Planning And A Typological Sermon, Joshua H. Jones
Funerals- Typical Planning And A Typological Sermon, Joshua H. Jones
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Like many other aspects of our culture, the landscape of planning and officiating funerals seems to have changed quite rapidly over the last decade. That is not to say that many of the things happening today were not present previously. However, the intensity and frequency of what we might call “challenging funerals” appears to have escalated. In what follows, I hope to provide a brief sketch of the anatomy of what may be encountered in funeral planning, as well as some proposals for how Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) pastors might faithfully handle some of the challenging aspects of ministering to …

Attending To The Beauty Of Creation And The New Creation, Charles Arand, Erik Herrmann
Attending To The Beauty Of Creation And The New Creation, Charles Arand, Erik Herrmann
Concordia Pages
The beauty of the earth, in all its intricacies, is a gift of the creator to us. And its value is not practical or ethical, but is given to us simply to delight us even as God delights in it. And it is powerful. N. T. Wright notes that beauty, whether in God’s creation or in human art, “is sometimes so powerful that it evokes our very deepest feelings of awe, wonder, gratitude, and reverence.”1 Beauty blossoms into appreciation for God’s creation and love of the creator.

Mallardi, Rocco J. “Using Luther’s Small Catechism as a Family Devotional.” A study of Family Prayer at Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 153 pp.
The goal of this study was to seek an answer to the question: how can a church help parents teach the faith in the home? In search of an answer to this question I studied how Martin Luther answered the question. From this study I developed a Small Catechism based curriculum for families to use as they gather for prayer and the study of God’s Word.

Metaphorical Imagery In Colossians: The Narrative Of Christian Living, Paul Muther
Metaphorical Imagery In Colossians: The Narrative Of Christian Living, Paul Muther
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Muther, Paul D. “Metaphorical Imagery in Colossians: The Narratives of Christian Living.” STM thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 114 pp.
Although many recent theologians employ conceptual metaphor theory to the Bible’s imagery surrounding the Gospel, few apply the same theory to the metaphors of Christian living. Although many theologians develop models to demonstrate the overall picture of Christian living, few tease out the implications of individual metaphors throughout a given work.
By applying conceptual metaphor theory and Justin Rossow’s narrative analysis tool of the actantial model to the text of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, this STM thesis examines three metaphors …
“Visiting Iniquity Of Fathers Against Sons” In Exodus, Thomas Egger
“Visiting Iniquity Of Fathers Against Sons” In Exodus, Thomas Egger
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Egger, Thomas J. “‘Visiting Iniquity of Fathers against Sons’ in Exodus.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2018. 665 pp.
In two of the most important passages in Exodus (20:5 and 34:7), Yahweh describes himself as “visiting iniquity of fathers against sons, even against members of the third and fourth generations.” Missing in nearly every treatment of this phrase has been any sustained consideration of the phrase within the context of the Exodus narrative itself. Apart from such interpretive grounding, “visiting iniquity of fathers against sons” has shown itself susceptible to widely varied and contradictory readings and, especially, maximally problematizing readings which …
