Two Powers’ And Early Jewish And Christian Monotheism, James F. Mcgrath, Jerry Truex Jan 2004

Two Powers’ And Early Jewish And Christian Monotheism, James F. Mcgrath, Jerry Truex

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Our understanding of early Judaism and its relationship to Christianity has been significantly advanced by Alan Segal’s formative work on the two powers heresy. This work demonstrated that belief in two heavenly powers was considered an intolerable heresy by the rabbis and that Christians were among those indicted. Furthermore, Segal argued that the two powers debate could be traced back to the first century, as evidenced by certain christological passages of the NT4 and by Philo's writings.

The Modernity Of Khomiakov, Paul Valliere Jan 2004

The Modernity Of Khomiakov, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In the case of Khomiakov and the other Russian religious philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, however, identifying the traditional element is a difficult task for a reason which becomes more obvious as one becomes better acquainted with their work: Khomiakov and the other Russian religious philosophers were not traditional thinkers.

How The Numbers Matter: Demographics And The Future Of Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Francis X. Clooney Jan 2004

How The Numbers Matter: Demographics And The Future Of Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Francis X. Clooney

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In Religious Demography of India, Bajaj, Joshi, and Srinivas analyze Indian census data from 1871 to 1991, in order to assess the shifts in demography in religious identity in India and on that basis make predictions about the future. They look closely into the data regarding the various states of India and even the individual districts of those states. The book, coming in two parts, invites readers to study the data for themselves: the first 175 pages offer an analysis of census data, but pp. 179-346 are comprised entirely of tables reporting data, thus enabling readers to make up …

The Intra- And Inter-Religious Conversions Of Nehemiah Nilakantha Goreh, Jon Keune Jan 2004

The Intra- And Inter-Religious Conversions Of Nehemiah Nilakantha Goreh, Jon Keune

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The life of Nilakantha Goreh contains a wealth of inter-religious and cross-cultural encounters, yet surprisingly little has been written about him. Goreh was a traditionally educated Chitpavan Brahmin, growing up outside the pale of British education and British-influenced Hindu reform movements. His name is best known now for how his initially staunch and public opposition to Christianity slowly gave way until he finally was baptized in 1848. What little scholarship there is on Goreh has tended to either focus on or view his whole life in light of his inter-religious conversion. Although Goreh's inter-religious conversion was undeniably crucial and worthy …

Viewpoint: Pastors, Pujaris, And Swamis: Hindu-Christian Encounter In A Classroom, M. Thomas Thangaraj

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I have been teaching a course titled "Christian Encounter with Hinduism," at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, since 1988. Students who enroll in this course are mostly those who are pursing the Master of Divinity program with a view to becoming pastors in Christian congregations or chaplains in colleges and hospitals. Some others are in the process of discerning their vocation as theologians, teachers, counselors, or informed laypersons.

A Bibliographic Essay On Hindu And Christian Dalit Religiosity, Mathew N. Schmalz Jan 2004

A Bibliographic Essay On Hindu And Christian Dalit Religiosity, Mathew N. Schmalz

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In his now classic novel Untouchable, Mulk Raj Anand portrays the life of a sweeper named Bakha. Bakha works cleaning latrines at the Cantonment, imitates the British "tommies" in his attire, and negotiates the differing spaces in which is Untouchability is defined. After an incident during which Bakha inadvertently touches a caste Hindu in the street, Bakha wanders through town. During his wanderings, he first meets a Christian missionary who speaks almost incomprehensibly about Jesus. Bakha then listens to a speech by Mahatma Gandhi and while he finds the Mahatma's vision compelling, his mind turns to reflecting upon how …

Core Issues Of Hindu-Christian Dialgoue: Idol-Worship, Cow-Protection And Conversion, J.K. Bajaj, M.D. Srinivas Jan 2004

Core Issues Of Hindu-Christian Dialgoue: Idol-Worship, Cow-Protection And Conversion, J.K. Bajaj, M.D. Srinivas

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Mahatma Gandhi epitomised the ideal of a believing Hindu in modern times. He was deeply read in the classical literature of Indian civilisation that constitutes the considerable scriptural corpus of Hinduism. But he did not derive his faith from this source alone. His beliefs and practices were derived at least in an equal measure from what the common Hindu of his time believed and practiced. In this respect also he was following the classical discipline.

Dialogue 'On The Ground': The Complicated Identities And The Complex Negotiations Of Catholics And Hindus In South India, Selva J. Raj Jan 2004

Dialogue 'On The Ground': The Complicated Identities And The Complex Negotiations Of Catholics And Hindus In South India, Selva J. Raj

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Interreligious dialogue is a vital theological concern for the Catholic Church in India. Over the past three decades, church leaders, progressive theologians, and maverick monastics have experimented with various models and forms of interreligious dialogue. Quite distinct from these contrived institutional initiatives is the dynamic of intimate, subtle, and spontaneous ritual exchange and dialogue between ordinary Hindus and Catholics occurring in the arena of popular piety and rituals at the grassroots level - often in opposition to institutional norms and directives - that may be described as "dialogue on the ground." In light of ethnographic research at the shrine of …
