Traditionally, Roman Catholicism has postulated that Jesus was a man who chose men to follow his mission as priests and that women cannot symbolically represent the masculinity of the messiah. Latin American Liberation Theology took the pattern of women’s work in communities to develop its way of theologizing. Women practiced this type of theology mainly for reasons of political exclusion. Due to this, the article explores the theology of women around the issues of female ordination, taking into account its methods based on participatory principles where people occupy the first place.

H. Vinson Synan (December 1, 1934—March 15, 2020) was a key successor to David du Plessis, known as Mr. Pentecost, to Catholic and mainline Protestant leaders. Like du Plessis, Synan was a classical Pentecostal who dedicated much of his life to promoting the move of the Holy Spirit beyond the confines of his own classical Pentecostal denomination, the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. His call to this work came in 1972 at an annual Catholic Charismatic Conference held at Notre Dame University when seeing some 8,000participants singing in the Spirit, he came to the conviction that Catholics had indeed received the …

As a Jesuit, Jose Mario Francisco has occupied various positions in the academe as a teacher and an administrator. At the same time, he has engaged in research on various topics such as Asian theology, religious identity, Christology, literary theory, Philippine literature in English, translation, and hermeneutics. A thread that runs through his writings is his interdisciplinary approach to the subject of his inquiry. A particular interest of Francisco in his efforts to understand Filipino Catholicism is his emphasis on mission as translation which for him necessarily involves interpretation.

In this article, the authors look into the theological background of the support that nationstates in the Western Balkans received during their formation at the end of the 20th century. Although many articles were written on the causes of the wars for national independence, and on the relationship between religious narratives and ethnic exclusion, very few were written on the theological support of the ethnic exclusion. Many indigenous Liberian pastors are not theologically grounded on a solid biblical foundation. As such, many Liberian Christians lack foundational knowledge of the truths of the Gospel of Christ for salvation. The prosperity gospel or “Faith, Wealth, and Health” theology in Liberia is a significant deviation from the Gospel of Christ that undermines sound hermeneutical interpretation of Scripture. This article traces the global impact of Pentecostalism with reference to its definition, varieties, and statistics. It also discusses the subject of development from a theological perspective, considering how development applies to Pentecostalism. The first part considers the ambivalence involved in Pentecostal sociopolitical engagement, and then in the second part, discusses how Pentecostalism and development relate to each other. It gives examples throughout the article of how Pentecostals are involved in development projects and sociopolitical activities worldwide.

Something Old, Something New: How New Churches Are Embracing Liturgy, Winfield Bevins

The movement toward ancient church tradition has been well documented; however, there has also been a steady rise of new churches that are embracing church tradition and liturgy. The first part of this article will examine the history behind this movement and the factors that have contributed to its development. Next, it will look at four case studies of new churches that are embracing liturgy, which I refer to as neo-liturgical churches. It will end with an exploration of the promise that this may hold for reaching young adults.

The Indispensability Of Inculturation For Effective Evangelization: Revisiting The Evangelization Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Mark Obeten

This paper argues that the incarnation is a profound moment in the redemptive plan of God and hence paradigm of evangelization. It demonstrates that non-inculturated evangelization lacks depth and may lose the fruits of its labor with time. The evangelization of Sub-Saharan Africa is used as a case in point to show this connection between evangelization and inculturation as inevitable.

The paper works through the sources of queer theology, giving special attention to how these sources are used in published works. Further, the paper explores the doctrine of the Trinity as a model of “radical friendship”, a relational model that is inclusive to LGBTQ+ folks, as well as the inadvertent queerness of Von Balthasar’s writings on the Trinity.

This dissertation proposes that the doctrine of the Trinity, in the field of political theology today, should be taken as a critique of the idolatry of nationalism and should point us toward a new theological politics that is informed by the proper worship of the triune God, especially in the Church’s sacred liturgy. Existing proposals regarding the relation between trinitarian and political theology can be sorted into two basic camps, separated by alternative understandings of the meaning of political theology as primarily either descriptive or prescriptive. My major argument in this dissertation is that Hegelian spiritual subjectivity can and should serve as a philosophical basis for envisioning a new conception of human subjectivity for the age of globalization. Why, then, does globalization demand a new conception of human subjectivity at all? What constitutes the Hegelian spiritual subjectivity such that it is not only relevant and but also necessary to the contemporary, postmodern context of globalization?
