Britain's Bomb: What's Next? (Book Review), Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Book review by Brian Stiltner.

Wicker, Brian and Hugh Beach, eds. Britain's Bomb: What Next? London: SCM Press, 2006.

ISBN 9780334040965

By the time this review is published, Tony Blair will no longer be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He pushed for a decision to be taken by the next general election: he wanted the UK to commit to replacing the current Trident system (a stock of 58 missiles and under 200 warheads, some of these housed on four nuclear submarines) with a new generation of nuclear weapons and submarines. The British Trident submarines are scheduled for retirement between …

The Emergence Of Sex, Ursula Goodenough Dec 2007

The Emergence Of Sex, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations

Biological traits, the foci of natural selection, are by definition emergent from the genes, proteins, and other “nothing-buts” that constitute them. Moreover, and with the exception of recently emergent “spandrels,” each can be accorded a teleological dimension—each is “for” some purpose conducive to an organism's continuation. Sex, which is “for” the generation of recombinant genomes, may be one of the most ancient and ubiquitous traits in biology. In the course of its evolution, many additional traits, such as gender and nurture, have emerged. Patterns of sexual exchange are the basis for patterns of biological evolution and are central to the …

Classified Timelines Of Vernacular Liturgy: Responsibility Timelines & Vernacular Liturgy, Russell Hardiman Dec 2007

Classified Timelines Of Vernacular Liturgy: Responsibility Timelines & Vernacular Liturgy, Russell Hardiman

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

These timelines focus attention on the use of the vernacular in the Roman Rite, especially developed in the Renewal and Reform of the Second Vatican Council. The extensive timelines have been broken into ten stages, drawing attention to a number of periods and reasons in the history of those eras for the unique experience of vernacular liturgy and the issues connected with it in the Western Catholic Church of our time.

The role and function of International Committee of English in the Liturgy (ICEL) over its forty year existence still has a major impact on the way we worship in …

Human Identity, Immanent Causal Relations, And The Principle Of Non-Repeatability: Thomas Aquinas On The Bodily Resurrection, Christina Van Dyke Dec 2007

Human Identity, Immanent Causal Relations, And The Principle Of Non-Repeatability: Thomas Aquinas On The Bodily Resurrection, Christina Van Dyke

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Can the persistence of a human being's soul at death and prior to the bodily resurrection be sufficient to guarantee that the resurrected human being is numerically identical to the human being who died? According to Thomas Aquinas, it can. Yet, given that Aquinas holds that the human being is identical to the composite of soul and body and ceases to exist at death, it's difficult to see how he can maintain this view. In this paper, I address Aquinas's response to this objection (Summa Contra Gentiles, IV.80-81). After making a crucial clarification concerning the nature of the non-repeatability principle …

The Sunday School As A Viable Tool For Church Growth In The 21st Century, Billy Nale Dec 2007

The Sunday School As A Viable Tool For Church Growth In The 21st Century, Billy Nale

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to disprove the allegations by many pastors and denominational leaders that Sunday School is no longer a viable tool for church growth. This project will show that pastors who work the Sunday School will find that Sunday School will work for them. The author of this project is pastor of one of the four churches studied. Based on the history and growth of Sunday School in these churches, interviews, and personal perspectives, this paper will describe lessons that were learned and the principles that are effective for Sunday School growth.

Avoiding War And Creating Peace In Kosovo, Matthew J. Gaudet

General Engineering

The article presents the author's comments on peace negotiations and the possibility of war regarding the independence of Kosovo from Serbia. According to the author, the Albanians of Kosovo will not refrain from war to free themselves from Serbian rule. He comments that with the ethnic division between the Serbs and the Albanians it is hard to predict whether independence will spark violence or ensure Kosovo's economic growth.
