With the single exception of a survey of Chinese history in the Western United States written by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, there exists no other documented history of the Chinese experience in Utah.

This paper offers an overview of Pioneer Chinese life in Utah territory from the Chinese railroad laborers in Box Elder County to the Chinatown settlement in Silver Reef mining camp in Washington County. Old Chinese customs, individual Chinese personalities and communities are rediscovered through the use of census data, newspaper editorials, and oral interviews. To write a descriptive, chronological history of Manti journalists and their newspapers was the purpose of this study. A century of journalism was traced, during which twenty-six editors and publishers printed six country newspapers. The study covered the years from 1867 to 1967.

The early history of Utah is both varied and interesting and presents a rich field of study for the student of Western American History. The subject treated in this paper is a segment of the early Utah story. It is a study of the activities of the Mormon leader Brigham Young in the southwestern Utah community of St. George. Involved is a detailed study of the years between 1861, when St. George was settled, and 1877, when President Young made his last visit to the community.

This study is an attempt to bring together available material, heretofore not collected, into a single publication pertaining to the policy of the Latter-day Saints in the treatment of the Indians - a policy that was largely peculiarly their own. The endeavor is here made to show that this plan, besides being the best method to insure protection for the Saints against unexpected hostilities, was also a means of education for the red man in the arts of peace.
