A Review By Kenneth Atkinson Of Alexandria And Qumran: Back To The Beginning, By Kenneth Silver, Kenneth Atkinson
Faculty Publications
Kenneth Silver (a.k.a. Kenneth A. K. Lönnqvist), is a historian and professional archaeologist, who has lived and worked for decades in the Near East. With extensive publications on Hellenistic and Roman archaeology, history, and numismatics, Silver is the director of a survey and mapping project in Northern Mesopotamia studying the border zone between the late Roman/ Byzantine Empires and Persia. Author of numerous publications on Qumran and related topics, Silver’s lengthy monograph proposes that the documents and type of library found at Qumran were based on models derived from Egypt. The main thesis of the volume is that Pythagorean philosophy …
The “Three Nets Of Belial” In The Dead Sea Scrolls: A Pre-Qumran Tradition, Kenneth Atkinson
The “Three Nets Of Belial” In The Dead Sea Scrolls: A Pre-Qumran Tradition, Kenneth Atkinson

Explicit quotations and allusions to writings from the apocrypha and pseudepigrapha are rare in the Dead Sea Scrolls. For this reason, the two references to non-canonical writings in the Damascus Document (CD) are of particular importance. The first is a citation from the well-known Book of Jubilees in CD 16:3-4. Literature on Jubilees and CD is quite abundant. However, the second and more enigmatic passage in CD is the topic of this paper. It has much to tell us about the source of the theology and beliefs reflected in the Dead Sea Scrolls. In this citation, found in CD 4:15, …

The Case For Hyrcanus Ii As The “Wicked Priest” And A Pirate: Evidence From Neglected Roman Historical Sources, Kenneth Atkinson
The Case For Hyrcanus Ii As The “Wicked Priest” And A Pirate: Evidence From Neglected Roman Historical Sources, Kenneth Atkinson
Faculty Publications
Scholars have long debated the identity of the mysterious person denounced in the Dead Sea Scrolls by the sobriquet the Wicked Priest (הכוהן הרשע). Since the discovery of the Scrolls, researchers have identified nearly twenty persons as the Wicked Priest. Some view this vast number of proposals as indicative of a faulty method for understanding the history of the community behind these texts. This is because such efforts assume the Wicked Priest was an actual person. Consequently, scholars seeking to uncover his identity use material from Josephus, Philo, Pliny, and other writers to interpret the references to him in the …
The Language Of Repentance In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
The Language Of Repentance In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
Efforts to understand the doctrine of repentance in the Book of Mormon have long been hampered by linguistic considerations—and especially the traditional translation provided in the King James Version of the Bible. Twentieth century studies provide a needed correction to this situation and open a wealth of potential new understandings of Book of Mormon discourse on repentance. Further, the discovery that the Book of Mormon uses the common biblical figure of speech of hendiadys repeatedly to expand and enrich the concept of repentance beyond biblical usage helps readers appreciate the ways in which repentance can be seen as the most …
Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
The concept of covenantal faithfulness toward Yahweh that Old Testament scholars have recognized and defined over the last century turns out to be a far better account of the Book of Mormon understanding of faith in the Lord, in Jesus Christ, than are any of the competing concepts of faith that have grown out of the Christian tradition over the last two millennia. For the Nephite prophets, faith was an active concept, better understood as faithfulness—as diligent obedience to the commandments the Lord has given to those who have accepted the gospel covenant through repentance and baptism. The divine …
Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

In this essay I have tried to provide a broad survey of the concept of covenant for Latter-day Saint students of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I began with a sketch of the history of covenant theology in the Christian tradition showing how the early New Testament idea of a baptismal covenant was soon replaced by the Christian institution of sacraments. Although the covenant idea played little role in the historical developments of Christian theology, it did resurge in the Reformation, but without widespread theological impact.
In contrast, over the last century, the role of the covenant idea …

The preachers of the twenty-first century who make the deepest impact will be preachers committed to the homiletical example of Jesus. Like Jesus, they will be God’s story and become God’s storyteller. They will utilize the art of storytelling to make God’s truth come alive by capturing the imagination of people in such a way that they have a dynamic experience with Him who is “the Truth.”

In an early discourse from the Saṃyuttanikāya, the Buddha states: “I do not see any other order of living beings so diversified as those in the animal realm. Even those beings in the animal realm have been diversified by the mind, yet the mind is even more diverse than those beings in the animal realm.” This paper explores how this key early Buddhist idea gets elaborated in various layers of Buddhist discourse during a millennium of historical development. I focus in particular on a middle period Buddhist sūtra, the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthānasūtra, which serves as a bridge between early Buddhist theories of …

Celebration Of Diversity, Katelyn Campbell, S. Joseph Kidder

Diversity is worth celebrating. It can be incredibly helpful in bringing us together in dialogue, love, and mission. By engaging with our differences, we can not only reach more people effectively for the kingdom of God but also be more united as a church body. When we choose to listen to, dialogue with, and learn from one another, we allow ourselves to be humbled. We cannot be united in our diversity and remain proud of heart. It is a spirit of humility that allows us to truly connect not only with those with whom we agree but also with those …

Keeping Your Spirituality Alive, S. Joseph Kidder, David K. Penno

When we think of biblical spirituality, we often limit ourselves to the spiritual practices such as prayer, devotions, fasting, worship, etc. These are certainly all vital components of our spiritual life. But less often do we consider ministry for others as part of our own walk with Jesus. Sometimes we see ministry as an optional part of spirituality, often left to those we perceive as “really spiritual.” But the Word of God indicates that a very important part of our walk with Jesus is our service to His body, the church, and to the lost sheep outside the church.

Eschatologie Et Écologie. Pourquoi Prendre Soin De La Terre Si Tout Va Brûler ?, A. Rahel Wells
