Background: Due to the global novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, many students in entry-level occupational therapy programs faced changes to their daily roles, habits, and routines. To understand beliefs about OT practitioner roles in a public health crisis, a cross-sectional study was designed to understand occupational therapy students (OTS) and occupational therapy assistant students (OTAS) volunteer activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A survey was developed and distributed in April 2020, and closed after five weeks. Quantitative data was analyzed in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (Version 27) and open response data was categorized in Microsoft Excel.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are highly prevalent among dental clinicians due to repetitive movements, awkward postures, and static positions. This article highlights the importance of ergonomics - designing work environments for the worker - in preventing career-threatening MSDs. Key principles discussed include proper operator positioning establishing neutral spinal alignment, adjusting patient positioning to minimize harmful movements, and adopting an "ergonomic mindset" prioritizing clinicians' musculoskeletal health. The article discusses how through comprehensive ergonomic interventions, dental professionals can reduce injury risks and enjoy long, pain-free careers.

Swallowing disorders are prevalent in tracheostomized patients and are associated with a high incidence of aspiration. This narrative review discusses the primary causes and subsequent management strategies for dysphagia in this population. Factors such as reduced laryngeal elevation, compromised hypopharyngeal and laryngeal sensations, impaired vocal cord function, loss of glottic airflow and subglottic pressure, weakened cough reflex, increased respiratory secretions, and disuse muscle atrophy have been identified as major contributors. These challenges can lead to severe complications, including aspiration pneumonia and respiratory failure. Since its first use in 1981 by Russian scientists, it is now widely applied in the treatment of various diseases, including chronic musculoskeletal pain, wound healing, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis and acute kidney injury. Aymé-Gripp syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disease. The de novo pathogenic variant of the MAF gene, located at 16q23.2, is considered the primary common cause of this disease. The pathogenic variant causes interference with lens and eye development and embryonic development. Patients with Aymé-Gripp syndrome typically present with bilateral cataracts, bilateral congenital sensorineural hearing loss, and Down syndrome-like facial features. Dual sensory impairment is observed in these patients. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the impact of in-person observation, in conjunction with didactic lectures, on students' perceived knowledge of speech-language pathology's (SLP) role and the roles of other healthcare professionals within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

We used a retrospective cross-sectional cohort descriptive study design of occupational therapy programs in the United States to understand whether top performing programs employ holistic admissions criteria. Background: Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) are widely used in health programs to assess clinical skills. We present results of a qualitative study investigating occupational therapy students’ perceptions of OSCEs’ impact on their learning and readiness for clinical practice.

Method: Six second and six third year students in the University of Alberta’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program were interviewed in separate focus groups. Independent reviewers applied thematic analysis to the focus group transcripts to identify, analyze, and report themes in the data.

Background: The purpose of this study was to establish the content validity and inter- and intra-rater reliability of the revised Visual Activity Sort, which is a card sorting assessment designed specifically for at-risk adolescents and young adults.

Method: Six content experts were selected and asked to rate the relevancy of each of the 121 Visual Activity Sort cards. Two trained raters participated in the establishment of inter- and intra-rater reliability with 30 high school students attending a charter school for at-risk adolescents and young adults in a socioeconomically disadvantaged urban area.

A 19-year-old male collegiate lacrosse player suffered an acute singular parasymphysis fracture of the mandible when he was struck in the facemask of his helmet by a lacrosse ball during practice. The fracture was confirmed via panoramic radiography and treated with a closed reduction under local anesthetic by looping a 26-gauge wire around the two right incisors and the right cuspid. This approach to managing the fracture was taken instead of an open reduction and plate application to be less invasive with the hope of a faster recovery and fewer complications. Podcasts have increased in popularity in the last decade, but description of their use in academic settings is lacking. The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate the difference in student performance on course examinations based on podcast usage and satisfaction and (2) examine the perceptions of educational benefits, usage preferences, and accessibility of podcasts in a clinical examination course in a hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum. An occupational therapist of 40 years experiences a traumatic event during her time in an acute care hospital. She journeys through a host of life-altering experiences, including cognitive decline, delusion, paranoia, and an inability to engage in her desired occupations. While on this journey and during reflections following her return home, she is able to see more clearly how an occupational therapist may have assisted with several of the major concerns she was experiencing, thus improving her well-being and quality of life. Purpose: Poor oral health is a known predictor of aspiration pneumonia in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and chronically ill. This study examined the feasibility of using myofunctional devices during a 5-week intervention for the management of oral care and dysphagia for residents in a residential aged-care facility.

Method: Feasibility was determined through evaluation of study recruitment and retention rates, adherence to intervention, and resident and staff acceptability of the intervention. Thirteen residents, ages 74–99, participated in the intervention and 10 care staff completed feedback on post-intervention questionnaires.
