Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
In Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, inferior terms of women’s employment perpetuate their subordination in family and society and impact their health adversely. How women are paid and valued in the fields, factories, and offices has direct bearing on women workers’ status within and outside the workplace. The statistical profile of women’s work in South Asia reveals ahigh maternal mortality rate, adverse sex ratios, low levels of literacy, the highest work participation of women in agriculture, and women’s estimated earned income as less than half that of men, signifying the undervaluation and unpaid nature of women’s productive economic …

'Embrace The Prudent Alliance': William Byrd Of Westover And Intermarriage Between Europeans And Native Americans, Katie Rose Guest Pryal
'Embrace The Prudent Alliance': William Byrd Of Westover And Intermarriage Between Europeans And Native Americans, Katie Rose Guest Pryal
Katie Rose Guest Pryal
This paper provides a rhetorical examination of the powerful colonial figure William Byrd of Westover's "History of the Dividing Line" and his call for interracial marriage as a path to peace with Native Americans. Byrd’s proposal of intermarriage, or biological assimilation, can only be read in its complex sociopolitical and legal contexts. The tone of Byrd’s writings could be read to imply an ironic stance on the part of the author. I argue, however, that because of the significant issues he addresses — war, land rights, and religion — and the seemingly favorable context in which he wrote, his ironic …

What Are We Trippin' On?: Transgressing The Fault Lines In Research On The Preparation Of Multicultural Educators., Carl A. Grant, Vonzell Agosto
Vonzell Agosto
How do we prepare multicultural educators? The purpose of the chapter is to discuss some of the research in multicultural teacher education that speaks to, and in doing so, participates in the life of this enduring problem. In what direction might other rationales and lines of inquiry lead the research in multicultural teacher education.

The Conservation Of Mayan Artifacts, Russell M. Franks
Russell M. Franks
Paper will examine the conservation methods and techniques used for the preservation of Mayan artifacts. Particular emphasis will be given to the four Mayan Codices known as the Dresden, Paris, Madrid, and Grolier Codices.
These four documents are unique in that, not only have they survived until recently in less than ideal conditions for almost five hundred years, but they represent a culture whose written record was almost entirely destroyed by the religious zeal of the early Spanish missionaries.
The fact that these codices still exist today is reason enough that special attention should be given to the care and …
Mr. Nigger The Challenges Of Educating Black Males Within American Society, Toby S. Jenkins
Mr. Nigger The Challenges Of Educating Black Males Within American Society, Toby S. Jenkins
Toby S Jenkins
The underachievement, lack of inclusion, and backward progression of African American men within American society, and particularly within the educational arena, has once again surfaced as a trend that demands immediate attention. However, the challenges of reversing the negative circumstances facing African American men requires transforming a broad array of social, political, economical, psychological, and educational issues that are deeply rooted in the very power structure of America. On one hand, the society espouses rhetoric of concern and desire to elevate Black males, but, on the other hand, practices a policy of oppression, prejudice, and disregard. Put differently, the experience …

Rethinking Social Realism: African American Art And Literature, 1930-1953., James E. Smethurst
James E. Smethurst
Stacy Morgan's Rethinking Social Realism is an ambitious and important study of left-wing African American expressive culture from the beginning of the Great Depression to the depths of the McCarthy Era. Its largely successful efforts to think across boundaries of genre, medium, and intellectual discipline make it among the most impressive studies of African American art and the Communist Left to date.
An Ethnographic Study Of The Social Context Of Migrant Health In The United States, Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
An Ethnographic Study Of The Social Context Of Migrant Health In The United States, Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
Seth M. Holmes PhD, MD
Background
Migrant workers in the United States have extremely poor health. This paper aims to identify ways in which the social context of migrant farm workers affects their health and health care.
Methods and Findings
This qualitative study employs participant observation and interviews on farms and in clinics throughout 15 months of migration with a group of indigenous Triqui Mexicans in the western US and Mexico. Study participants include more than 130 farm workers and 30 clinicians. Data are analyzed utilizing grounded theory, accompanied by theories of structural violence, symbolic violence, and the clinical gaze. The study reveals that farm …

“This Woman’S Work” In A "Man's World": A Feminist Analysis Of The Farm Security And Rural Investment Act Of 2002, Nick J. Sciullo
Nick J. Sciullo
This paper will discuss the background of the 2002 Farm Bill and its origins in the Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (hereinafter the 1996 Farm Bill). Secondly, a basic discussion of feminist international relations and more generally, feminist legal theory will be invoked to provide a theoretical beacon for the rest of the journey. Thirdly, specific arguments about ecofeminsim and postcolonial feminism are teased out in order to critically investigate the direct and indirect consequences of United States farm policy. Fourthly, the 2002 Farm Bill's disparate impact on international womyn will be discussed and theories about the …

Indigenous Peoples' Contributions To Cop-8 Of The Convention On Biological Diversity, Sam Grey
Sam Grey
During the Seventh Conference of the Parties (COP-7), held in Malaysia in 2004, Indigenous Peoples made a significant impact on the negotiations between states in a number of key issue areas. Building on this success, and as a part of the preparations for COP-8, held in Brazil in 2006, the IIFB has decided to provide documentation detailing Indigenous Peoples’ experiences with the thematic areas under discussion. Hence, the effort to compile this set of case studies. These case studies are meant to synthesize Indigenous input into the different themes discussed at the Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the …
Regionalism, The Supreme Court, And Effective Governance: Healing Problems That Know No Bounds, Nick J. Sciullo
Regionalism, The Supreme Court, And Effective Governance: Healing Problems That Know No Bounds, Nick J. Sciullo
Nick J. Sciullo
By actively endorsing remedies that favor a city-suburb divide, the Supreme Court has failed to allow regional development. The Supreme Court's federalism jurisprudence is unresponsive to the myriad issues pervading society. Ultimately, individuals must take action, through a process formulated in this article, to change the way in which governments and the courts respond to the needs of populations.
A battery of cases including Brown v. Board of Education and its progeny, Missouri v. Jenkins and Milliken v. Bradley, reached the Supreme Court during the tumultuous 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. A vast array of environmental laws and housing regulations also …
