Many American veterans return to the civilian workforce and report having problems reintegrating into society, as well as finding their role in the new corporate social realms. Over 80% leave their civilian jobs within the first two years of employment, and over 70% report experiencing feelings of loneliness. Recently, the World Health Organization reported that the lack of perceived social inclusion also has a significant economic impact on both individuals and societies. Every year in the United States, over 200,000 individuals leave the military and begin their transition to civilian life, a period known as veteran community reintegration (VCR). A significant number of these individuals have reported VCR challenges, with a substantial number reporting mental health concerns. Recent studies have found that a number of individual differences (e.g., social support) can influence VCR challenges; however, no known studies have examined the influence of trait anxiety and emotional intelligence (EI) on VCR. Homeless research has focused on the service-directed approach, but few qualitative studies have focused on the critical and sensitive nature of the intake process. Staff in rural and remote communities struggle to refer services and mainstream resources to homeless veterans. The purpose of this case study was to explore case managers' perspectives on intake procedures in rural Pennsylvania communities. Lewin's force field analysis was used as a theoretical basis to examine the rationale for behaviors and forces that impact an individual's state.
