Genetic And Epigenetic Variations In Asthma And Wheeze Illnesses, Todd M. Everson
Genetic And Epigenetic Variations In Asthma And Wheeze Illnesses, Todd M. Everson
Theses and Dissertations
Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition, is common worldwide with no cure and limited effective prevention strategies. It is well recognized that asthma has a multifaceted etiology, though many of the underlying mechanisms involved in asthma development, persistence and remission are still convoluted. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, regulate gene-expression but are not related to changes in the actual DNA sequence. Recently, differential patterns of DNA methylation within many genes have been associated with asthma, particularly within genes involved in the differentiation of pro-inflammatory T-helper 2 (Th2) cells. DNA methylation patterns within less known biologic pathways undoubtedly are involved in …

Mode Of Delivery And Risk Of Asthma In Children 5-14 Years Old In Tabriz, Iran, Roya Sahebi, Leyla Sahebi, Amir Hossein Jafari-Rouhi, Ahmad Jafari-Javid, Stanley Luchters, Chad Hughes
Population Health, East Africa
Introduction: It has been suggested that a cesarean section increases risk of developing asthma due to lack of exposure to maternal microflora during birth. To investigate the association between the mode of delivery and the risk of asthma in children aged 5-14 years in Tabriz, Iran.
Methods: A case-control study was performed on 233 (case = 81, control = 152) children aged 5-14 years referred to outpatient clinics of Tabriz Children’s Hospital and Sheikhorrais Clinic in 2014. Clinical asthma diagnosis was done according to Global Initiative for Asthma Criteria. A questionnaire was administered to obtain a demographic, environmental, and clinical …

Household Bush Burning Practice And Related Respiratory Symptoms In Grenada, The Caribbean, Muge Akpinar-Elci, Kareem Coomansingh, James Blando, Larissa Mark
Center for Global Health Publications
The practice of household bush burning in Grenada occurs frequently, though it is not well documented. The effects of the emissions from bush burning on respiratory health of the population have never been researched in Grenada. The goal of the study was to measure the frequency of bush burning and to investigate the relationship between bush burning practice and respiratory health in Grenada. In this cross-sectional study, a questionnaire was used to gather information from households in the parishes of St. George and St. Andrew, Grenada. In total, 225 participants were recruited and their responses on household bush burning and …
Applying Failure Modes And Effects Analysis To Public Health Models: The Breathe Easy At Home Program, Johnna S. Murphy, Margaret Reid, Amanda Ali, Laura Harrington, Megan Sandel
Applying Failure Modes And Effects Analysis To Public Health Models: The Breathe Easy At Home Program, Johnna S. Murphy, Margaret Reid, Amanda Ali, Laura Harrington, Megan Sandel
Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research
Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a structured process used to identify and prioritize risks by ranking them based on severity, occurrence, and detectability. Historically, FMEA has been used within industries, including automotive and health care. This project explored the adaption of the FMEA template to a small public health program designed to improve asthma outcomes. The Breathe Easy at Home (BEAH) program is a multi-sector partnership that uses a web-based system to link clinical sites with housing code inspections and enforcement for patients with asthma.
In July and August 2014, an FMEA was conducted to uncover risks within …
Low Prevalence Of Asthma Among Textile Workers In Karachi, Pakistan, Sana Tanzil, Asaad A. Nafees
Low Prevalence Of Asthma Among Textile Workers In Karachi, Pakistan, Sana Tanzil, Asaad A. Nafees
Community Health Sciences
Objective: To determine the prevalence of asthma in textile workers through post-bronchodilator spirometry and to compare the differences in prevalence based on different criteria used to assess asthma.
Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted between July and December 2013 in Karachi, Pakistan, and comprised workers from15 textile mills in the city and its outskirts. Asthma and associated respiratory symptoms were assessed using the American Thoracic Society Division of Lung Diseases Questionnaire, and post-bronchodilator spirometry. SPSS 19 was used for statistical analysis.
Results: Among the 372 workers in the study, asthma was found in 19(5%) as diagnosed on post-bronchodilator spirometry. The …

Does Maternal Asthma Contribute To Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Obstetric And Neonatal Complications?, Katrina F. Flores, Candace Robledo, Beom Seuk Hwang, Kira Leishear, Katherine Grantz, Pauline Mendola
School of Medicine Publications and Presentations
Purpose
Examine whether maternal asthma contributes to racial/ethnic differences in obstetric and neonatal complications.
Methods
Data on White (n=110,603), Black (n=50,284) and Hispanic (n=38,831) singleton deliveries came from the Consortium on Safe Labor. Multi-level logistic regression models, with an interaction term for asthma and race/ethnicity, estimated within-group adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, placental abruption, premature rupture of membranes, preterm delivery, maternal hemorrhage, NICU admissions, small for gestational age (SGA), apnea, respiratory distress syndrome, transient tachypnea of the newborn, anemia and hyperbilirubinemia after adjustment for clinical and demographic confounders. Non-asthmatics of the same racial/ethnic group were …
A Multisite Evaluation Of Pediatric Asthma-Related Treatment In Accordance To The 2007 National Heart, Lung And Blood Institute Expert Panel Report — 3 Guidelines, Emeka Oraka, Brittani Robinson, Trevor Ousley, Francesca Lopez, Leroy Graham
A Multisite Evaluation Of Pediatric Asthma-Related Treatment In Accordance To The 2007 National Heart, Lung And Blood Institute Expert Panel Report — 3 Guidelines, Emeka Oraka, Brittani Robinson, Trevor Ousley, Francesca Lopez, Leroy Graham
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: To determine if Georgia-based healthcare providers who received continuing education on pediatric asthma as described by 2007 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Expert Panel Report – 3 guidelines demonstrated improvements in asthma-related treatment.
Methods: We used a multi-site, cross-sectional design. Data were collected via surveys administered to healthcare providers and via randomized medical chart abstractions. Chart abstraction occurred at 12 months prior to intervention (n = 149); one month post-intervention (n = 208); and three months post-intervention (n = 123).
Results: Substantial improvements were observed among the providers who used pre/post bronchodilator spirometry (5% at baseline, 12% at …

Health Education To Decrease Obesity In Adolescents With Asthma, Mitzie Eumarie Thomas
Health Education To Decrease Obesity In Adolescents With Asthma, Mitzie Eumarie Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity increases asthma severity and is costing the health care industry a significant amount of money. Decreasing adolescents' obesity will decrease the risk for chronic health problems, which can have a significant impact in adulthood. Implementing a school-based health education program can decrease the prevalence of obesity amongst adolescents. This program will be implemented by school nurses in the after-school program at Public School 59 (P.S) in New York City. The purpose of this project is to develop adolescents' school-based obesity prevention policies and documentation which will focus on increasing their nutrition education, increasing physical activities, and providing skills to …
