Development Of A National Core Indicators Dashboard Of Long-Term Services And Supports Outcomes For Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Rhonda Haitz

Capstone Experience

The National Core Indicators (NCI) surveys are conducted annually across the United States, including Nebraska. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or their guardians are surveyed to learn more about their experiences and the quality of their services and lives (National Core Indicators- IDD, 2023). However, the data is only useful when understood and applied to make informed decisions to improve the lives of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (McDonald et al., 2013). This project designed and developed two data dashboards for the state of Nebraska that publicly track, analyze and display the NCI survey results. The In-Person Survey …

Strategies To Encourage Recall And Prevent Relapse After Full Mouth Rehabilitation Under General Anesthesia In Children, Claire Koukol Dec 2023

Strategies To Encourage Recall And Prevent Relapse After Full Mouth Rehabilitation Under General Anesthesia In Children, Claire Koukol

Capstone Experience

Background: Dental caries are preventable. Dentists utilize many prevention strategies in the office and provide at-home education to families. However, once a child develops Early Childhood Caries (ECC), especially in more severe cases, they may need general anesthesia (GA) to complete treatment. While this is an effective way to achieve full mouth dental rehabilitation (FMDR), this burdens the healthcare systems and families and does not come without risk to the patient. Patients with high caries experience remain at high risk of caries relapse after FMDR under GA, sometimes necessitating additional FMDR under GA. While there has been a significant amount …

Association Of Socioeconomic Status And Mental Health Characteristics And Participant Attrition In A Cohort Study, Mathews Thampi Aug 2023

Association Of Socioeconomic Status And Mental Health Characteristics And Participant Attrition In A Cohort Study, Mathews Thampi

Capstone Experience

The cohort study is an essential design for investigating associations between a variety of risk factors or exposures and a plethora of health outcomes. However, one of their biggest weaknesses is participant attrition, which can introduce bias and impact validity. Understanding whether this attrition is related to exposure and outcome is a critical aspect of assessing the potential for selection bias. The Women and Their Children's Health (WaTCH) study is a prospective cohort study designed initially to examine the health impacts of exposure to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The study has undergone two waves of data collection and is …

Advance Care Planning is understudied in Native American and Alaskan Natives communities. There is a strong need for further research on culturally adapting advance care planning (ACP) for indigenous communities. Specifically, for the Ponca Tribe, culturally adapting the ACP used would ideally increase the acceptance of ACP in that community. This systematic literature resulted in identifying four themes other tribes have utilized to culturally adapt their ACP, advance directive, palliative and/or end-of-life processes in an effort to increase completion rates. The four themes were involving the elders with the adaptation process, increasing education efforts and awareness of ACP and ADs, …

Alteration Of Perceptions Of Safety Before And After Fit Testing Among College Of Dentistry Students, Tanner H. Clark

Capstone Experience

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how hospitals and healthcare academic programs operate. This change has restricted services provided as well as educational opportunities for those training to be in healthcare. Further, personal protective equipment (PPE) has been required to help protect workers potentially having contact with patients who may have COVID-19. Dentistry workers are at particularly high risk due to repeated and continuous aerosol generating procedures. Healthcare students have traditionally been restricted to areas with minimal risk during clinical experiences; however, with the exposure occurring ubiquitously, avoiding the risk is nearly impossible. There is no uniform inclusion of students in …
