Maternal mortality is a serious health concern and harms society’s economic, physical, and psychological well-being. It is tragic for the woman’s family and community when a woman passes away during pregnancy, at delivery, or shortly after delivery. Hospital interventions are needed to mitigate the social impact of maternal mortality. In the U.S., several initiatives have been enacted to reduce maternal mortality. Fighting racism would also help African American women’s rates of maternal mortality as they are subject to stigma in everyday contexts, during pregnancy and obtaining healthcare, and when obtaining resources and services during pregnancy.
