Many couples worldwide are affected by infertility, which is defined as an inability to conceive after at least one year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Many Muslim and Middle Eastern societies place a high societal value on having children and therefore, couples who are unable to conceive for various reasons often find themselves feeling stigmatized and socially isolated. Muslim refugees living in the United States face additional challenges and barriers to care due to their refugee status. This study interrogated predictors of pregnancy and the effect of a history of sexually transmitted infection (STI) on probability of conception among a cohort of women seeking fertility counseling (N=170), using multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models. There were 76 (44.7%) total pregnancies. 32 (39.0%) were achieved spontaneously by women who never received ART (N=82). Among women who did receive ART (N=88), 35 (39.7%) were achieved by ART and 9 (10.2%) achieved spontaneously. Cigarette smoking in women has been associated with adverse reproductive outcomes such as reduced ovarian reserve, poorer in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes and increased adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study examined the association of smoking with ovarian reserve in a cross-sectional study of women seeking fertility treatment, and potential effect modification by race and NAT2 acetylator phenotype. Data from 265 women from the Louisville Tobacco Smoke, Genetic Susceptibility, and Infertility (LOUSSI) Study were analyzed.
