This qualitative interpretive study aimed to describe the experiences of 13 American Indians living in urban settings and their use of traditional healing and biomedical health services for type 2 diabetes. Urban American Indian adults living in the United States who used traditional healing and biomedical health services for type 2 diabetes were recruited for the study through purposive sampling, including snowball sampling. Predictors Of Glycemic Control Among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients In Owerri, Nigeria, Jideuma Ikenna Egwim

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern globally and in Owerri, Nigeria. The deleterious effects of diabetes have been linked to poor glycemic control. According to the International Diabetes Federation, poor glycemic control is reflected in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels greater than 7.0%, which are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Studies have shown a dramatic rise in diabetic complications in Nigeria, particularly in Owerri. However, evidence is lacking on specific risk factors associated with poor glycemic control among DM patients in Owerri. With health insurance assuming a significant position in healthcare service delivery in Nigeria, addressing this …

Healthcare Access For Elderly African American Type 2 Diabetics On Medicare, William Alexander Floyd

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractPrior research has shown that African Americans have less access to healthcare than do White Americans. The study’s purpose was to determine the association between race/ethnicity and quality care measures in a population of Medicare recipients with Type 2 diabetes, aged 65 75 years and over. Covariates predicted satisfaction with doctor care, compassionate doctor care, and indifferent doctor care using Andersen’s health behavior theory. The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) sample consisted of 1,716 people with Type 2 diabetes, with most (76.6%) being non-Hispanic Whites, and the remainder non-Hispanic Blacks (10.8%) and Hispanics (12.6%). Race/ethnicity were associated with quality-of-care measures …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of An Established Glycemic Monitoring Program In A High School Setting For Adolescents With Type I And Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, Tabatha Lee Obeda

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adolescents with Type I and Type II diabetes need to monitor blood glucose and food intake, administer insulin, and participate in activities including physical education during school hours to maintain glycemic control. Glycemic management programs (GMPs) exist for the improvement of diabetes management during school hours. The purpose of this project was to evaluate a GMP in a school system in a rural area in the Southeastern United States. The goal was to determine if the existing GMP met objectives and to make recommendations for continuation, revision, or discontinuation of the GMP. The logic model provided the basic framework for …

Relationship Between Health Literacy And End-Stage Renal Disease Among Type Ii Diabetics, Joelle M. Stolte

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The progression of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) among type II diabetics is preventable, yet complications continue to plague many. Reports show that 29.1 million people (9.3%) in the United States have diabetes, and 40% of those individuals develop ESRD. Four research questions explored the relationship between ESRD, health literacy, and healthcare. Data from 2010-2015 from the National Institute of Health (NIH) was quantitatively analyzed. The conceptual framework was the revised health service utilization theory. The target population included 3939 diverse males and females between the ages of 20-75 diagnosed with type II Diabetes. Results from Chi-square, cross-tabulation, binary, and …
