Plyler Children: 21st Century Challenges With Judicial-Policy Implementation Affecting Immigrant Children In New Jersey, Christine T. Brenner, Kirk A. Leach, David Tulloch
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Denying unauthorized immigrant children access to a free public education through incomplete judicial policy implementation may lead to an illiterate underclass. Communicating, implementing, and enforcing Plyler v. Doe school registration documentation requirements continue to be difficult at the district level. In 2008, an ACLU study in New Jersey found that 187 of 516 school districts were mandating inappropriate documentation from parents registering their children. Separation of powers requires that executive agencies proactively implement transformative judicial decisions.

Investigating The Influence Of Interpretation On Children's National Park Stewardship Behaviors Using The Elaboration Likelihood Model, Susan Vezeau
All Dissertations
Interpretation efforts are commonly used in park and protected area management to communicate information about a place to visitors, and in some cases, are also intended to persuade visitors to engage in stewardship behaviors. The National Park Service (NPS) Junior Rangers (JR) programs are intended to develop a sense of stewardship within participating children; however, few studies have explored the effectiveness of these programs. In addition, despite considerable research investigating interpretation and its influence, further exploration of the factors that influence stewardship behaviors in participants of interpretation are needed. The purpose of this Dissertation research was to: 1) develop scales …
Possible Psychosocial Benefits Of Having A Sibling With A Disability, Jenna M. Talbott
Possible Psychosocial Benefits Of Having A Sibling With A Disability, Jenna M. Talbott
Senior Honors Theses
Possible psychosocial benefits resulting from exposure to siblings with disabilities are investigated in the current study. Previous literature has generally overlooked the possibility of psychosocial benefits by exclusively focusing on the negative effects of having a sibling with disabilities. Contact theory suggests that the increased exposure to individuals with disabilities should increase positive attitude toward those who are struggling with disadvantages. This investigation hypothesized that this tendency would be manifested as elevated empathy and compassion in individuals who have siblings with disabilities, and that these traits would be influenced by certain demographic variables. A survey was distributed, and the responses …

Little Emperors And An Army Of Orphans: The Government’S Control Over The Idea Of Family In An Overpopulated World, Corinna L. Miller
Honors College Theses
This research elaborates on the connection between governmental policies for population control and the psychological effects felt by its citizens. Governments enact laws to form and shape their country, but when plans to benefit society as a whole overspill into the personal rights of families, there can be unforeseen consequences that span across cultural, economic and physiological wellbeing. These side effects can have debilitating outcomes for countless generations to come, even after the policy has been abolished. In an age where exponential population growth is a severe problem, this study attempts to understand what happens when governmental policies influence the …

Consumer Perceptions Of Child-Friendly Shaped Healthy Fruit And Vegetable Snacks, Selena Lauren Baker
Open Access Theses
Fruits and vegetables (FV) are widely recognized as healthful foods by the public, and most individuals are aware of dietary guidance recommendations to consume more FV. However, actual consumption of FV has been and continues to be low in the United States and many other countries, despite public health efforts to change this trend. The sub-optimal intake of FV among children and adolescents is of particular concern due to high nutrient requirements for proper growth and development during these life stages. Fruit and vegetable intake patterns in childhood have been shown to track into later life and may affect individuals' …

This study examines the the demographics of military families, which can be used to can assist in better serving their needs, reducing their stress, and increasing their happiness with military life. The diversity of these families significantly impacts their interaction with their social networks and societal institutions, and would benefit from policy that creates additional programs aimed at helping military children through critical military transition points. Additional research is needed on how younger children operate in military families, and the impact of supports available for spouses caring for younger children during deployments and separation from their spouse.
