Toward An Economic Development Strategy For The County Of Middlesex, Stephen Evans

This paper examines the factors that are necessary in the successful adoption of an economic development strategy in Middlesex County based on an analysis of Census data pertaining to population, gender, age, income, education, employment, housing, and agriculture and an investigation of the governance issues in the region. The findings reveal that in order to overcome conflict among constituent municipalities and foster a sense of cooperation between them, decisions about economic development initiatives must be removed from the political realm and placed in the hands of local, appointed business actors.

Humanizing The Downsizing Process: A Review Of A Recent Downsizing Process In Three Conservation Authorities, Thomas Prout

This paper examines the ways in which the negative effects of downsizing can be reduced based on a survey of stakeholders involved in the downsizing processes of three conservation authorities in Ontario – Ausable Bayfield, Saugeen Valley, and Upper Thames River. The findings reveal that the most important factor to consider with respect to downsizing is whether there are good human resource management practices in place long before the downsizing process is to occur.

Teaching is reported to be a stressful occupation and social support is thought to mediate stress. The purpose of the study was to identify relationships between the level of professional burnout and social support of high school teachers in Northeast Tennessee. In this correlational study, a sample of 228 secondary school teachers in Northeast Tennessee completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Teacher Support Network Inventory (TSNI). Respondents' satisfaction with support and amount of support were ascertained from the TSNI. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were changes in the quality of life of cancer patients aged 65 and older (N>488) following initial treatment for cancer. A Quality of Life conceptual model was developed. Quality of Life refers specifically to physical, social, and functional status. The study analyzed data from a larger longitudinal data set and compared data for patient’s with prostate, breast, lung, and colon cancer at three observation points: (1) three month Recall, (2) after surgery and prior to chemotherapy or radiation (Wave I), and (3) fourteen weeks following surgery, during chemotherapy or …

The fact that people are living longer has heightened awareness of the elderly and many of their special needs. Due to this trend, experts have begun to more closely investigate caloric and nutrient needs of the elderly as well as factors that may alter dietary intake. Forty-two older persons in Lincoln County, West Virginia agreed to participate in research designed to explore the relationship between dietary intake and food availability among rural, community-based elderly. Participants completed a 38 item telephone questionnaire which provided information on demographics, grocery shopping habits, and dietary intakes. The following study examined the ability of a weighted application process to predict tenure of employees working at a behavioral health center. Because the company considered the application process a three month period, the weighted application instrument included information from the application form and data taken from the first three months of employment (personal history information, training data and performance appraisal data). The job applicants employed with the company less than eight months were considered low tenure employees. Bosnian Civilian Survivors Of War In Exile And In Bosnia: A Comparative Study, Ines Lajla Matijas

This study describes the psychological consequences of war for 111 female Bosnian civilians, 59 of whom are survivors in exile and 52 of whom are living in Bosnia. These participants, ages 18-23, completed anonymous self-report questionnaires which provided information about the prevalence of traumatic stress symptoms and the relationship between traumatic events experienced during the war and current symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Contrary to expectations, no significant differences were found in PTSD diagnosis and PTSD severity between survivors in exile and survivors in Bosnia.
